Well, I appear to have shafted my main system.

I downloaded and installed the latest version of PerfectDisk defragger and set it to do an offline defrag of the C drive. Now when I boot I get what looks like a progress bar (presumably from the defragger), then the system reboots to the "last boot failed" page.

Start Windows Normally and Restart Last Good simply repeat the cycle. Safe mode, of whatever flavour, produces a list of device drivers then the system reboots.

I can get at the disks via linux, but I'm not sure what to delete to stop the automatic defrag at boot time. Any hints would be appreciated.

As it happens, my second system (which I am using here) insists on trying to complete the installation of PhotoGallery every time I boot and I don't have the CD it is asking for. Any suggestions on how to kill that also?

Thanks guys.

I REALLY hate windows

I don't know PerfectDisk but I would contact them first to see what can be done to disable thier program.

Failing that I'd gather any data files you need/want via linux, wipe the drive and reinstall Windows.

For the program that is trying to finish the install. Will it let you say no, then when Windows is started go into the Add Remove Programs icon and remove/uninstall the Photogallery program?

I have no other suggestions on your main system, aside from what Dirk has already suggested.

For the secondary system, check msconfig and your registry keys (run, run once and run once ex) to see what's starting up. You might be able to kill it there.

Good luck.

Doh, I allways forget about MSConfig. Yeah I'd agree to trying there first.
