Its finally happened.
Adelphi has finally added digital, two-way service to my neck of the woods, though you'd think that a major city in Colorado would have been properly wired years ago.
Anyway...
I need some recommendations for a good router/firewall between the cable modem and my house LAN. I am looking for solid, reliable, secure, and easy to use.
I know that this has been discussed before in the Tavern, but since these technologies and products are such a moving target, I'd try and get the latest info.
Thanks in advance.

We're using a Linksys router that I purchased back in October. It still works wonderfully for our needs. We currently have 3 pc's connected through our DSL modem.
I paid about $90 for it at CompUSA and that's about what they're still going for. They have wireless now that run approx $150, but personally, with all the other electronic crap we've got around here, I'd wonder about interference.

CISCO or not, it's $800. ANd for a home LAN? Um. NO.
Let's not forget he said easy to use. While I'll admit that I don't have any experience with Cisco routers, I've heard enough horror stories about their certification exams, kthxla~.

But Cisco IOS is your FRIEND!
Seriously, listen to Serani. There are lots of good DSL/router/hubs out there, I've heard.

Adelphi is a major Colorado city? Since when? I have never even heard of it and I have lived in Colorado nearly all of my life.

Methinks he meant Adelphia the cable company. you know, the one that just filed for bankruptcy because the founding family treated the company coffers like their own bank account? Indictments pending.

Yes, I meant Adelphia - the cable company. I can't help it if I am typing challenged. :P
I thought I'd give them a try -- unfortunately, any DSL service has to deal with Qwest at some point -- something I would much rather avoid. Besides, cable is theoritically better if they haven't saturated their network (and is somewhat less expensive as well). If Adelphia turns out to be sucky, I will probably go DSL at that point. According to DSL Reports, all the vendors in COS have potential problems, so it seems like a dice roll anyway. The cable "option" is easy to drop if Adelphia has any problems (due to bankruptcy or other things).
But I'd really like to get rid of my tin cans and string...
And thanks all for the suggestions... it looks like the LinkSys 4 port router/switch/firewall is a very good choice.

A word of warning: if you upgrade the BIOS, make sure to check the Linksys forums at www.dslreports.com about the best BIOS for your model. Linksys make solid hardware but some of their BIOS revisions are pretty buggy. On mine, for instance, it's widely held that 1.40.2 is the last "stable" BIOS (they're up to 1.42.x).
On a related note, are there any problems hosting a NWN server from behind a Linksys and 1. having others connect from outside AND 2. having another LAN PC connect as well?

Love my Netgear RO318. They make a similar model in 4 port and 8 port varieties. I have actually forgotten the password since I set it up almost a year ago, so I haven't been able to configure ports for hosting a game, one of these days I'll have to reset it to factory settings so I can get in to the dang thing.
On the wireless front, even with a new wireless phone, I get great service from my Netgear MA301. Can you tell that I like the Netgear products?
I've also set up a Linksys and a 3Com LanModem. They are all pretty comparable in the ease of setup. With modern web setup utilities, they are all going to be comparable.
