YouTubery: list your fav topics...

i have found myself hitting youtube frequently these days, realizing that if i can come up with the right topic for good searches there's some great stuff on it (just gotta get past all the crap).

but i'm looking for more ideas of interest. gonna start with a topic which kept me enthralled for hours...

aikido > best martial arts scenes > tony jaa

aikido lead me to some great clips, from clips of the original sensei, to some great stuff by steven seagal, to some of seagal's better fight scenes. this ultimately lead me to start searching for the best martial arts scenes which took me thru the obligatory jackie chan, bruce lee, jet li stuff, but also let me explore some of the lesser knowns like kenny (crazy legs) lo, donnie yen, "the jet" what'sname and some others.

but the best discovery was something i'd been clueless about which is the muay thai wonder tony jaa. never having seen ong bak or some of his other flicks i was utterly awed & amazed by this goldmine.

My friends and I went to see the movie this was in ("The Protector") and I agree it was an awesome scene. The camera work was great too.

The plot/acting was absolutely HORRIBLE though. Heh. I think they actually dubbed over a white Australian guy, even. After the first major fight scene in the parking garage where these roller bladers and BMX rider come... basically out of nowhere, there was a long dramatic pause.

From somewhere down in the front of the theatre came a confused and very loud, "Uh... What!?" Everyone cracked up. Great moves though. Later on there's another ridiculous scene involving horrible CGI and and Tony strapping busted elephant legbones onto his arms in about 0.5 seconds while the HUGE bad guys just gape for no reason after kicking his butt all over the place for 10 minutes. Not to mention about a 5 minute stretch of just Jaa twisting legs/arms/necks and the sound of splintering bones.

Being an IT guy, I can comment on this.

Seriously, youtube is out of control. People are totally addicted to it, and at many organizations you can have dozens of people watching youtube stuff simultaneously all day long. It may not be the same people all day (though sometimes it is!), but the constant drain on bandwidth and increase in network traffic can bring business applications to their knees. It's pretty much the same reason many workplaces block streaming internet radio.

The fact that many networks are now putting entire episodes of their shows online in streaming format is killing bandwidth all over the place too. Imagine it's lunchtime and 20 people out of 200 employees decide "I'll just catch that show I missed last night while I'm eating lunch in my office!" Kerplunk! :lowsmile:

I haven't banned/blocked anything for my people yet, but I've been considering it. Bandwidth usage from 11:30am-1:30pm spikes hard here, enough to create a noticeable slowdown on some occasions, and I've only got 60 people...

heh i actually met that guy (jaime), he was at our monoski event in utah last year trying a monoski and doing some serious jumps there with em. warren miller brought him and a camera crew out to shoot some footage that went in their latest film.

that footage was significant to the skiing world i believe because it was the highest jump in the record books. hardly painful tho - the worst ski wreck i ever heard of was a guy who attempted a long flip jump and landed 1 foot below the ramp he'd dug out, subesquently locking is ski tips into the base of the ramp and instantly breaking both his ankles as his body flung over the ramp while his feet went nowhere (from around 60 mph).

Pretty sure that's a genuine underground nuclear test. The shockwaves from the blast push the ground up into the air, and then it collapses back into (relatively) the same place. There's an obvious ripple effect as well.

Yeah, I wish I was in good enough shape to do parkour properly. I used to be better at it. Back in college you would often see me walking on handrails or fences, sometimes with a good 15 foot drop on one side. Never got busted, and a sprained ankle was my worst injury.
