So ...

What we playin?

I've got D&D 3e and 3.5e and the new 4e stuff. I know 3/.5 is (or was at any rate) online under the open gaming license, so it might still be available

not sure we have anything else really enough to run anything, so if folks decide on something different, we may have to look for online resources or another sucker to run the mess :o

I'm good with whatever you got. I'm sure I can find enough online-source for my own reference, assuming we keep it "simple" at least initially.

The only pnp I've ever played was Hackmaster and that was only for a few sessions, so I'm open to anything.

Is 4 as "simplified" over 3.5 as some are saying?

Asharad
4th July 2008, 09:38 AM
I'm interested in this but have no idea how it works.

Would I have to actually post several times a day (because I can't always do that and wouldn't want to hold the game up).

I am really intrigued, however.

FWIW, here is a "beta" 4e character generator: http://www.pathguy.com/cg4.htm

Ash: It'd be like a standard table-top session (though you might not have ever done that), but "slowed down" somewhat. Something like:

1) We all pick a game system
2) We all pick an Attriel, I mean GM...
3) We generate characters
4) GM takes us through a scenario, either of the "canned" or "sprung from the brain of" variety (otherwise known as "TEH GMZ IS TRYING TO KILLZORZ MEEZ! OMG!!!!ONE!!!11!")
5) GM will describe what each of our characters sees, and probably provide a link to a crude map showing who is where
6) GM will instruct us when to make rolls, as we tell the GM what actions our characters take (order is different each "round", as a skill called "initiative" is used to modify our rolls to see who moves/acts when).

Rinse, repeat. Kill monsters, get XP, etc. Tabletop sessions tend to have more witty banter than anything, which is a lot of the fun, but which also slows things down a lot. This would definitely be an experiment and given our largely "newbish" group makeup, I'm thinking even a VERY basic intro scenario would make some sense.

A very instructional (and IMMENSELY funny) set of podcasts can be found via the Penny Arcade site... basically 3 or 4 RPG newbies get together and explore 4e (with a veteran DM) and you learn a lot through listening to them, I'd recommend it.

Asharad
4th July 2008, 10:03 AM
I love Penny Arcade anyway so I will. And I played tabletop (and really enjoyed it).

I just worry if I don't make it back for a couple of day (or more than a week, as is about to happen) I'd screw up everyone else's experience.

It is different, it is a lot easier to understand I think especially for new players, but I won't say it is "simplified" per say. I really enjoyed the changes they made between 3/3.5 and 4 actually.

4 seems a lot more like an MMORPG then 3/3.5 and earlier editions did.

What will we need to be able to play? Cuz I don't have any DnD books and can't afford to go out and buy them right now.

DinbinFanfoom

While books would likely help, I'm betting a lot of our reference info can be found online.

I was gonna be Minotaur rogue, but decided to switch to get a little more class variety. That and apparently Minotaurs are extinct in the 4th era :P

When are we thinking of starting? I know Sweeman was interested in taking part, but he's in Texas at the moment (something about having a place to live while he goes to Rice. foolishness).

Alternatively, could someone join late?

attriel
7th July 2008, 12:37 PM
If no one minds the lag, I was thinking next week? Gives me time to pull an old 3e adventure out of the attic (see? this ? this is why I don't clean!) and do the legwork to convert it to the 4e systems. Since with everyone listening to the PA/PVP podcast, the one adventure I know is out in 4e seems ... predictable :o

Also lets folks start building their chars. We can probably slip someone in a bit late, how long is he gonna be in TX?

and who all/else is playing?

I'm interested, but haven't made the time to peruse the link Din provided about the rules/world. Seems kinda overwhelming, esp for something even less than a newb, a la me. :D

Reading over the roster list looks... wordy. :lowlol:

Basically -- During the days, I'll post the gm bits, and after that and through the evening, everyone posts their actions and converses amongst themselves.

Not sure how far we'll get in 3 weeks, but probably not to done

Barring a major epiphany or otherwise change of heart, I'll not be doing this. Looks way too complicated and I'm not "getting it." Will pay attention to this round, see if something clicks. Have fun!

This is true. I thought about including them in the list, but I wasn't sure how certain either is.

Will eight adventurers be too many? Granted, some people will be unavailable at times due to erratic work schedules/requirements and vacations.

I think I can manage it to work with 8. "standard group" is 5, but there are guidelines for tweaking. Any more than 8 and we'd have problems (Kiir and I were actually discussing the high interest and commenting that if anyone else new popped in she might run a second adventure so we could split folks up and keep it wieldier)

But I think 8 is manageable

DinbinFanfoom

Well, I've learned that Tieflings rarely group w/ their own type b/c other races don't like it when more than one Tiefling gets together. So...Flay was just looking for an adventure and found y'all. :D

I just read some more of the PH, and as the cleric, I am going to give these words of advice. Don't die. Yup, because each corpse is going to cost 560 gold to raise and 8 hours worth of work. There better be some Dead Raising Clinic in this world too. Can you imagine the demand for something like this?

No, but I said it'd take me the week to get the adventure sorted out and converted, remember? eesh

It looks as if interest is getting rather large for one group, so if you need another to round out a second group, I'm game to try.

But, I'm only able to check in evenings. If that's cool with everyone, I'm in. If you decide to stick with one group, I'm fine with being a spectator.

Kiir
10th July 2008, 08:57 AM
Draknor and Sagar if you want to make up characters go for it, I think we're going to split the group, so you two can be in the second group with Ash and Swee when they are both back next week. I'll be running that one.

Sagar

I can make an elven ranger (archer) or a dwarven cleric. I'd be happy with either.

Play whatever you want, honestly clerics are not necessary anymore, which is nice. As long as the group has a little diversity (though running a group of 5 rangers could be fun too) there shouldn't be a problem.

I can't get to the roller from work (site blocked) so I used the character sheet generator (4d6 x 6). The set was absymal so I rolled a second time and got:

8 16 17 11 15 16.

These are higher, in general, than I wanted. Can I drop the 8 to 7 or 6 for RP reasons?

I'll try to roll something up this weekend. I'd like to wait until our first local 4e session goes to see how things work a bit better, but I think I'd like to try an Eldarin Wizard.

I'm sorry, I thought you guys knew I was going to be AFK for so long.

Why don't you go ahead and I'll read along and join up next adventure. I'm not sure I have the time (although I certainly have the desire) so this way I'll be able to judge. I'd hate to start and then have you all have to wait around for me (again).
