Are we supposed to know all the stats of the monsters or is that for the DM to know and for us to wonder as we beat on them?

I found the 4e monsters guide online and if I'm not supposed to look at it, I won't.

I personally don't wanna know. Atty will likely describe creatures instead of naming them outright, which adds to the "what is it?" factor, plus then you can make arcana rolls to attempt to identify it.

No, characters don't necessarily know that. Given that, a lot of the time the players DO know about all the basic common low level yard trash, but it's not necessary. And keeps you from telling me how to run my monsters :)

If there's ever anything you need to know, I'll describe it or come right out and tell you.

4E has changed thinsg for even such basic monsters as goblins. They aren't 4hp wimps anymore. And there isn't undead induced de-levelling any more either. That's all I am gonna say.

Well, I already know about some monsters having listened to the PA/DnD podcasts which is what got me interested in reading up on the monsters in the first place. But I'll resist the urge. Well, maybe I'll take a peak at a really high level one. ;)

nah, feel free. as the GM I'm entilted to change anything i want anyway, so if everyone starts suddenly "knowing" that crigans are vulnerable to fire, and everyone HAPPENS to carry a fistfull of oil and burning arrows and such ... well, these were enchanted by a mage long ago, and they're resistant to fire. Don't much like water. Or air. Or some darn thing, if only I could remember, yaknow? :)
