Naw, roll away, at least as far as I am concerned.

You stand on the docks of the great trading city of Xaeon. Your journey here was long and uncomfortable, so it is with a sense of freedom you walk the bustling dockside. Unfortunately you are not burdened with gold, or even silver. The merchant that hired you on had to cut you losose after his shipment of foodstuff went bad during the voyage. You were supposed to travel to ports beyond, but now it seems you're going to have to fend for yourselves in Xaeon -- at least for awhile.

The action of the docks is mesmerizing. There are ships in port from all over the world, carrying every manner of exotic goods. Sailors and merchants of all races and backgrounds mingle on the wharves, with money changing hands so fast you can barely even follow. The sights and sounds are so overwhelming that you almost don't notice the group of men that casually coalesce around your party. They are a rough lot, scarred and crusty sailors armer with saps and quarterstaves. The leader of these scurvy dogs, a toothless man with tattooed knickles, smiles crookedly and says, "You've all just volunteered for an exciting life at sea. Do you want to do the easy way or the hard way?"

Initiative:

Corran 19 + 4 = 23
Sailor 19
Grog 17 +1 = 18
Sailor 18
Sailor 16
Bealtaine 13
Head Sailor 12
Bryseis 9 + 2 = 11
Sailor 8
Pendergast Prigg 3 +1 = 4

"Awesome!" says Pendergast. "We were just talking about how exciting a life on the high seas would be. The wind, the water, all the manly sailor guys all in close proximity, the fish. You guys seem like you are offering just the sort of opportunity that we have been looking for! Tell us where we need to be to set sail and we are all ready to go."

"Only thing we need to do is take Corran and Beal to the healers to get that plague thing cleared up. Also, you might not want to take Grog because- and I tell you this as someone who just spent some time on a ship with him- he gets seasick and it comes out both ends. Oh, and I should tell my Uncle, the mayor, who is waiting for us with my cousin the warchief (he's from out of town, but he and his men are here somewhere. You guys should meet, you'd get along great!), that we are heading off with you fellas. But after all that we'll be ready to go. Assuming you guys will have us!"

DinbinFanfoom

It means you's is good at the lying game.Yes, lying or influencing people, bending the truth, etc. When trying to do this, you roll a typical D20 and add 9 to the result. Assuming that's higher than the NPC's base resistance to a bluff (via whatever mechanism the GM deems appropriate) you may or may not succeed, or fall somewhere in between.

Insight is the counter roll to Bluff and Intimidate, iirc, or just a straight Wis roll. Unless you roll really low, the Bluff should go well in this case.

Now, now boys. Do we really look like easy pickins to ye with your sticks and your bags of rocks?

Grog pats the head of the warhammer at his belt and lifts his shield.

Wouldn't ye rather share a tankard of ale and tell us stories of your travels? I'll even buy the first round, if ye don't mind waiting a bit so I can deal with this here explosive diarrhea. But, if ye be lookin' to lose the rest of your teeth, I'm a guessin we can do that for ye too. What's it gonna be, lads?

/ooc in retrospect, I'd like to reconsider dropping my stats to sub par levels - if that's ok I'll adjust, if not, I'll live with it.

/also ooc - don't the rest of you have your own thread to adventure in? Don't make me teach you a lesson. Me hammer could do with a few more head-smashins. Of course, I could just infest your adventure too. Grr.

Corran walks up the the nearest sailor and makes sure to cough on him.

Sorry... bit of the goblin flu.

He pulls out a dagger and starts picking at the dirt under his fingernails, content to let Pendergast talk his way out of this, but ready for action.

Bluff roll Pendergast Prigg 7 + 9 = 16

Some of the sailors start looking at the group a bit warily and backing off a bit. The leader just smiles and says, "The hard way it is boys. If they are unconscious when we deliver them a little seasickness isn't going to be noticed." The men watch the group and begin to close in.

ooc: Draknor you can drop some stats to a 7, but I would prefer nothing lower.

I figure the pack just needs a reason to disperse and a flaming, screaming leader just might be enough to push them over the edge...
So as I hack a mighty cough, I'll stagger closer to the leader (shift) as I pray to Moradin for assistance Channel Divinity, Divine Fortune (free action - +1 attack) and then explode upward with my greataxe with an avenging flame (+6 hit, 2D12+5 damage if hit and he bursts into flames (5 fire damage ongoing), half damage and no ongoing if miss)

PS: Does it help if we put this detail in the first few fights until we understand it better or would you rather we didn't?

Kiir

It actually helps quite a bit, since then I don't have to switch screens to look up everything.

Having seen the press gang for what they were, Bryseis wondered why Pendergast was trying to reason with them. Using his circumlocution as a distraction, she drew her sword from her hip and unhooked her flail.

When negotiations broke down and the sailors charged, she broke into a feral grin. 'Times like this, I know why my ancestors liked blood sacrifice so much. It's just FUN to watch your enemies bleed and plea!'

She lunges into the nearest opponent (shift) and brings her flail around into his face, following with her sword a moment behind (twin strike).

I'll designate whoever I'm attacking as my Quarry, which gives an additional +1d6 on one damage roll ; decided after the attack rolls are done. I'll just say the first that hits
Flail ATK: +5, DMG 1d10+4
Sword ATK: +6, DMG 1d6+4
(both counting +1 DMG from Two Weapon Fighting)
+1d6 DMG

Draknor
23rd July 2008, 08:26 AM
Ok, a fight it is, then. You'll be pickin yer teeth off the seabed when I'm through with ye!

In one smooth motion, Grog draws his warhammer (minor), moves to engage the leader (move action, assuming he's close enough), and attacks with spinning sweep (encounter - warhammer +6 to hit vs AC, damage 1d10 +5, and knocks the target prone). I'll also choose to mark the target (he gets a -2 to attack anyone but me - and if he shifts away from me or attacks someone else I get a basic melee attack as an opportunity action).

If you want to finish the battle up during the day, I'll just use cleave (at will - +6 vs ac, damage 1d10 +5, an adjacent enemy takes +3 damage too) as necessary and also a healing surge/second wind if needed.

/ooc I just moved my wis and int stats back to where they were before I dropped them - I didn't realize that wisdom played a part in opportunity attacks (bonus to hit and stops them moving). Important to protect the squishies. :D

Asharad

"Wow," remarks Pendergast to the leader, "You must have gone to the Advanced Press Gang Academy because apparently you are some sort of dockside genius. I mean, that was a pretty good story, told well, and yet here we go anyway."

I'll step back if there is room and it doesn't provoke an AoO (move action), I'll Warlock's Curse the leader (minor action) (assuming he is still alive; an extra 1d6 damage) and Eldrich Blast ( +4 (constitution / charisma) vs reflex 1d!0 damage I think +4) the leader- again if he is still alive at that point.

If not, I'll switch targets to one of the gang (assuming they haven't bolted).

Sweeman
23rd July 2008, 11:12 AM
Corran sees the rest of the press gang backing off and decides to attack the leader as well.

In the blink of an eye he flicks his dagger at the leader's undefended throat (sneak attack - +8 vs AC - 1d4 [thrown dmg] + 2d8 [backstabber + sneak attack] + 4 [dex] DMG) and pulls out his short sword (minor action).

Corran looks to the sailor he coughed on before and smirks, Seems you've got a bit of the plague. Don't you worry I'll fix you right up.

Shiz
23rd July 2008, 11:42 AM
A nearby merchant snickers to himself as it is clear that the press gang is about to get pressed right back.

Kiir
23rd July 2008, 02:11 PM
Corran throws his dagger at the leader's throat (9 + 8 = 17 damage: 4 + 9 (4 & 5) + 4 = 17), it strikes hard and sticks out of his throat, blood pools around the dagger and runs down the leader's throat.

One of the Sailors moves towards Pendergast and strikes out with his quarterstaff (attack 16 (12 + 4); damage: 9 (8+1)), his strike is solid and he hits the warlock soundly in the side.

Grog draws his warhammer and moves forward to engage the leader. He strikes out with his hammer (attack 14 + 6 = 20; damage: 9 + 5 = 14) in a wide sweep knocking the injured leader prone.

The next sailor looks at the party and his injured leader, but gamely steps into the fray swinging his quarterstaff at Bealtaine (attack: 13 (9 + 4)) his strike clangs off the dwarf's armor causing no damage.

The next sailor moves in on Bryseis, he swings his quarterstaff at the Tiefling (attack: 16 (12+4); damage: 6 (5 + 1)) solidly hitting her across the chest.

Bealtaine moves towards the leader, the sailor attacking him (AOO attack 11 + 4 =15) misses hitting the dwarf as he moves away, and quickly attacks with his axe (attack: 10 + 6 = 16; damage: 7 (6 + 1) + 5 = 12 + 5 (fire) = 17) killing and setting on fire the now lifeless corpse of the leader.

Bryseis attacks the sailor who has just hit her (attack: 14 + 5 = 19 & 10 + 6 = 16; damage: 9 + 4 + 3 = 16 & 5 + 4 = 10) Her flail and blade slash out and leave the sailor bloodied and reeling from the damage.

The last sailor looks at the group, looks at the way the combat seems to be headed and takes off down the docks.

Pendergast Prigg takes a step away from the sailor attacking him and Warlock curses him. He then casts his Eldrich Blast (attack: 14 + 4 = 18; damage: 8 + 4 + 2 = 14) hitting the sailor that attacked him quite hard.

Corran 19 + 4 = 23
Sailor 19 (damage 14)
Grog 17 +1 = 18
Sailor 18
Sailor 16 (damage 26)
Bealtaine 13
Head Sailor 12 (dead)
Bryseis 9 + 2 = 11 (25/31)
Sailor 8 (running)
Pendergast Prigg 3 +1 = 4 (16/25)

Asharad
23rd July 2008, 02:55 PM
I'll Eldrich blast the same target, assuming he is still around when it becomes my turn. Otherwise I will do the same to the next closest target.

Draknor
23rd July 2008, 05:57 PM
I'll attack any nearby sailors (moving up to 5) next round and will attack with cleave at will (+6 vs ac, damage 1d10 +5) hits an adjacent enemy for 3 damage.

(killing and setting the leader on fire was hilarious:lowlol:)

Since (I assume) we are all bunched pretty much together...

(shouts) You may run, filth, or stay and burn in the flames of faith!!!!

(I raise my holy symbol high and invoke divine glow bathing all in light)

Blast 3 - each enemy is hit. Wisdom (+3) vs Reflex 1d8+3 damage
Allies get +2 power bonus to attack until the end of my next turn.

They may be filth, but they don't need to die for that. I'd prefer they run and perhaps turn to a new line of work.

Corran pulls out his crossbow whirls towards the fleeing sailor and shouts "Run from me will you?" as he unleashes a bolt from his bow. (Sly Flourish - +4 [dex] vs AC - 1d6 + 8 [dex][cha])

If I need to move closer to the running sailor to engage him I'll do so as long as I'm not incurring AOOs.

Assuming her target still stands, Bryseis will strike with her flail, following that blow with the sword once again. Well, he fell for that strike once ...

Kiir
24th July 2008, 01:55 PM
Looking over the combatants Corran grabs his crossbow and shoots at the Sailor attacking Pendergast Prigg. (attack: 14 + 6 = 20; damage: 4 + 4 = 8) his bolt thunks solidly into the Sailor's leg, causing the sailor to start limping a bit.

The Sailor not wanting to end up like his leader, takes a step away from Pendergast and carefully dodges between everyone to make his escape.

Grog moves to where Bryseis is and smashes his warhammer at her target (attack: 7 + 6 = 13; miss), his aim is a bit off though and he misses connecting with the Sailor.

The Sailor that attacked Bealtaine decides his companions are making a good decision escaping and since he isn't engaged in combat, he turns and makes his way off the docks as well.

The Sailor now covered by both Bryseis and Corran, thinks his odds just got decidedly worse, and attempts to head out as well. Corran swings at his as he moves past (attack: 14 + 6; damage: 3 + 5 = 8) and connects solidly, causing him to crumple to the ground dead.

Seeing the rest of the press gang running away Bealtaine holds his attack for now (if you want to actually attack they are all still in range, but they don't look like they are planning on keeping up their attack).

Corran 19 + 4 = 23
Sailor 19 (damage 22) (running)
Grog 17 +1 = 18
Sailor 18 (running)
Sailor 16 (dead)
Bealtaine 13
Head Sailor 12 (dead)
Bryseis 9 + 2 = 11 (25/31)
Sailor 8 (running)
Pendergast Prigg 3 +1 = 4 (16/25)

Do we shuffle through the bodies to see if they have anything worth taking?

Should I use my streetwise ability (+9) to see who's who in this burg and maybe get a line on some employment?

What is the procedure?

Sagar
24th July 2008, 02:10 PM
Can I help the guy that just crumpled? Does he get 3 chances to avoid death like PC's do?

If possible, I'd like to use my healing abilities (heal +8) to stabilize him and get him concious again.

I rush over to the downed sailor and attempt to stabilize / heal him.

As I run, I yell "Hey Pender! You'd better see to that bruise you have or it's gonna leave a MARK! You too, Bry!"

Asharad
24th July 2008, 02:23 PM

24th July 2008, 07:05 PM
A good fight. Pity they had to to resort to weapons, though. Ah well! Let's see if they have beer money on them, shall we? Grog helps the party rifle through their belongings.

/ooc Ash, yeah, streetwise to gather info would be in order at this point, I think.

Sagar
28th July 2008, 07:21 AM
Oh, and Pender..

Two critical questions:

1. Was this a random encounter or were these guys looking specifically for us?

2. Is this the kind of town where waiting for the guard is a BAD idea?

Hmm.. maybe you should get the answer to 2 first...

Kiir
29th July 2008, 10:14 AM
ooc: I'll get to this in a bit, we were out running all weekend and yesterday, I didn't even have time to really get online. The short one was a wee bit demanding. I will post during naptime today though.

Kiir
29th July 2008, 01:42 PM
Bealtaine attempted to help the downed sailor, but he is dead.

The rest of the group checks the leader for any coin, and find a few copper and his quarterstaff. No coin of any significance is found.

As the group looks around trying to figure out where to go from herea young man in a robe approaches you. "That'll teach the press gang to pick on newcomers," he says laughing. "But where are my manners? allow me to introduce myself. I am Brother Egil, and I've been looking for people who can take care of themselves in a scrap. If you'll allow me to buy you a round of drinks, I'd like to talk to you about a job. What do you say?" The man then falls silent and waits for the group's decision.

Sagar
29th July 2008, 01:45 PM
Attempts insight (+8) and religion (+5) checks to verify whether or not this man really is clergy and if so, of what god (or at least, of what alignment)

Kiir
29th July 2008, 02:17 PM
Bealtaine examines the cleric closely and feels he is telling the truth (insight 10 + 8 = 18). He looks like a cleric to you (religion 10 + 5 = 15) though you aren't sure which god he worships, the man does not feel evil though he does look a bit desperate.

Asharad
29th July 2008, 02:25 PM

Draknor
29th July 2008, 08:00 PM

Sweeman

Corran's eyes glaze over at the mention of drinks and a peaceful smile creeps over his face.

Kiir
30th July 2008, 01:15 AM
Seeing the group is amenable, Brother Egil leads the way to a nearby bar, the Bilge Rat. It's as charming as it sounds, but the beer is better then one would expect. After everyone has been served Brother Egil begins to speak.

"Two days ago, a librarian from my temple disappeared. For reasons that are somewhat complicated, the high priest has declined to look into the matter. The missing man, Lucius, is a dear friend of mine, and I'm worried that evil may have befallen him. I'm willing to offer you 75 gold pieces each, 25 now and 50 on completion of the mission, if you can find Lucius and return him to the temple. I will provide you with any information I can, and healing should you require it. Are you interested?"

Sagar
30th July 2008, 07:21 AM
I think I can speak for the party when I say we'd are certainly interested and would like to hear more.

Why do you think evil has befallen him and what kind of evil?

Draknor
30th July 2008, 08:00 AM
Whisper to Beal: I think the pay could be better - or at least he could offer us another drink (you are the diplomatic type after all:lowsmile:)

Asharad
30th July 2008, 09:49 AM
I'd also like to know why the High Priest doesn't care.

I'll intimidate this guy if I have to, but I would rather he just told us. Or Beal can be good cop and I'll be bad cop. I don't necessarily want to do the job and find out now the High Priest wants us dead.

Sagar
30th July 2008, 09:59 AM
/ooc I am interesting in more information. I haven't said we'll take the job yet or at what rate of pay.

I am also curious how a religious guy has that kind of cash to throw around.

I, too, am curious about the High Priest. We'll need to get the skinny on him before we take this, I think.

To the priest:

Let us get another round (that fight was thirsty work) before we launch into the rest of the tale.

attriel
30th July 2008, 10:51 AM
Bryseis sits back in her chair. 75 gold coins? "Who, precisely, do you think is involved that you're throwing around that kind of change?"

Asharad
30th July 2008, 01:56 PM
/ooc I don't understand if that's a nice amount of money or not much. Drak seems to think its not much, atty seems to think it is a lot.

Kiir
30th July 2008, 02:09 PM
Brother Egil nods to the group and orders a second round of drinks he then begins to answer your questions about his friend.

"I have known Lucius for most of my life. We were both brought up in the temple. He became a librarian and I, a priest. But six years ago, something strange hppened. He seemed to change overnight. One day he was my friend of many years, and the next he was a complete stranger. He asked bizarre questions, seemed to remember nothing of our friendship, and treated the temple as his own personal library. Some months later he was caught violating the sanctum and was expelled from the temple. Shortly thereafter, he left Xaeon entirely and was gone for 4 years."

He stops to take a sip of the ale before continuing with his story.

"When Lucius reappeared, he was like his old self. He came to the temple and begged to be readmitted, saying he had no memory of the previous five years. Thuron, the high priest, seemed adamant about refusing Lucius's petition but changed his mind after a private meeting with him. Lucius returned to the temple, and it was just like old times for eight or nine months. Then he started to look haggard, and he told me he wasn't sleeping well. Something was disturbing him, but he wouldn't say what. He started asking a lot of questions about what he had been like right before his expulsion. The high priest talked to him about it, but Lucius wouldn't let it go."

He pauses again to catch his breath and let the party comprehend what he's said so far and then continues.

"I grew increasingly worried for my friend. He seemed to the brink of insanity, as if one small thing could push him over the edge. Two days ago, he failed to come to the temple. I went to his home and found it empty. I searched all over but could not find him. The priests of my temple deny it, but I know that something has happened to Lucius. I want you to find out what."

He then looks at Bryseis and says, "I am a simple man and have been in the priesthood all my life, I do not know what a fair wage for adventurers to check out what happened to my friend would be, so I offered what I have been able to gain. I do not know if it is too much or to little. I am worried about my friend and this is all I can offer for a group to find him."

Sagar
30th July 2008, 04:03 PM
/ooc I thought it was a lot for clergy to have. But it depends on the world view.

Typically, 1c could feed a man for a day. 1s for a month and 1g for a year. Some places, though, 1g is for a month. Still, that is a lot of money - for a non adventurer or noble.

I don't know what the value of money is in this land.

I will try using insight to attempt to determine if Egil is telling the truth and to determine if he seems to be leaving something out.

Also, I'd like to ask him about the high priest .. as one clergy to another and as one who must also suffer through the vagaries of high priests....

Asharad
30th July 2008, 04:35 PM
I say let's do it.

We should find out if he has any starting points other than going to the guys house and checking it out.

We could talk to the High Priest as well, although I wouldn't expect him to be very receptive.

Draknor
30th July 2008, 07:18 PM
Grog nods and agrees that we should help. After all, his purse is empty and beer doesn't grow on trees.

/ooc it's a lot of money. But, we're not common people, we're adventurers. And it never hurts to ask for more.

Sagar
30th July 2008, 07:23 PM
{whispers to the group} For that much money, there must be more to this. We'd better find out what if we can.

Kiir
31st July 2008, 02:33 PM
Bealtaine is quite certain that the priest is telling the truth and not leaving out any information. He seems and acts genuinely worried about his friend (Insight 20 + 9 = 28).

Brother Egil is happy to answer everyone's questions and give whatever information he knows, he says, "The only places I know that you might inquire and search are at his house, which I am happy to take you too, and at the temple. Though I must ask you not to mention my involvement in the search for Lucius there. It would be best to says you are friends of his from abroad and that you've come to town to see him. The High Priest was not happy to have Lucius back in the temple, though he did allow him back, so he is not at all concerned about his disappearance, and as such when I showed concern told me it was not the temple's business."

<asks Egil> Oh.. anything odd about the High Priest? Is it the same person all this time? New priest lately? Has his temperment changed any lately or over the time you've discussed?

Agree, house then temple. Then let's get on with the bashing of the bad guys.

Egil answers the questions about the high priest, "The only real change is Milo his assistant, is now the one giving orders, we very seldom see the High Priest at all. When I last talked to him he seemed the same as always, but I never had much contact with him since I am just a simple priest."

He also comments, "I can take you to Lucius' house now if you like, or to an inn so you can store your packs and have some place to stay while you are in town. I suggest the Scholar's Quill for an inn, it caters to the academics and is a bit less rough then some of the other establishments in town. If you like we can head there and then to Lucius' house since it is on the way."

He waits for the groups decision, if they want to go to the inn first or just get started searching Lucius' house.

I am inclined to do Lucius' house first. I'd hate to discover later that we've been watched and critical evidence was burned or something while we saw to our creature comforts. (me? Paranoid? bah!)

I'm sure the Inn will be ready when we are.

I vote to search Lucius' house first.

Yeah, to the house first. I'm feeling all fresh and rested.

I'll post soon, but we weren't home at all yesterday and boy decided my lap is the best place to nap (and his nap time is my best time to make a real post) so hopefully I'll get to it this evening in between packing for our trip (mine and Des') to Atlanta.

Sorry guys, I thought I would have more time while in Atlanta, I had maybe an hour on the computer in the past week. I should be able to post tomorrow at naptime though, to get us back up to speed.

Brother Egil leads the way to Lucius' house. He stays close to the group trying to make sure they don't rob or overly disturb the house.

Apparently, being a librarian in a trading city is not a lucrative job. Lucius' small home has only the ground floor, consisting of two rooms, although there is a basement. Most of the main room is cluttered with books, scrolls, quills, ink pots and other tools of the scholar's trade. A cot is jammed into one corner, and there's a small desk under the front window. The small backroom is part kitchen, part junk storage. A trapdoor leads down to the basement.

Alright guys, lets split up and see if we can find anything unusual. Especially look for items you wouldn't expect a man of the cloth to have.

I'll start at the desk..
Unless you think we should check the basement first in case we are interrupted...

(As I search, I'll use religion checks to try to identify unexpected items or texts.)

Grog joins the search, attempting not to wreck or disturb too much.

Bryseis looks around the sparse hut for a moment.

In response to Bealtaine's question, she speaks up. "I'll start on the basement. I'll let you know if I find anything unusual."

She moves quietly to the trapdoor, and looks to see if anyone else is going to join her before she lifts the lid to see what kind of ladder there is, and what's downstairs.

Be careful, if there is something dangerous in here, it would probably be in the basement. Don't go alone.

Bryseis snorts. "I doubt that a horde of skeletons is just hanging around in the basement of a missing priest on the off chance someone comes to investigate months after the fact."

She smiles at the notion, briefly. "But they're welcome to do so if they'd like."

I'll join ye in the basement. It's boring up here and I like it below ground better anyway. And it's been at LEAST an hour since I got to hit anything.

I'll post sometime this week (hopefully tomorrow or wednesday), I've been hit with really bad first trimester exhaustion and haven't really had the energy to post and what not the past week or two, hopefully since I just hit second trimester it will start to fade soon.
