Discussions, in this format, take a long time.
I am trying to come up with ways to streamline it. I can anticipate some questions and try to answer them up front but I many times I have information that is available only if you specifically ask for it.
In this last post, I put that the guy paused to answer your last questions, then left. If you have questions, post them and he will answer.. but then the encounter is over and you can post your next actions as well.
We'll see how this goes. I'll trying giving you information you are generally privvy to. You can then ask questions and / or use skills (insight, diplomacy, intimidation, etc.), and I'll give you the results.

Attached is a rough sketch of the Barony of Diert.
It is a wedge-shaped piece of land on the far western edge of civilized land.
To the west lie unexplored and dangerous mountains. North and east, though the upper pass, lies a desert. East along the trade road are other lands.
In the Barony, Humans, elves, half-elves, dwarves and halflings flourish.
Humans can be found anywhere. Half-elves, though not numerous, can also be found anywhere. Elves tend to be near the Verity Forest. Halflings favor the areas near Corner and Bentonville. Dwarves like the mountainous areas around Connemara. Eldarin are fairly rare in Diert. That one won the Contest is a source of much speculation...

Let me mention something here. Please don't jump down my throat because everyone says "I'll let the paladin speak." As I've joked with ES, I am not my character. I don't have 18 STR, 18 CHA or even half the intelligence. Plus, while I'm at work I am doing all of this in between compiling software, waiting on email responses, etc. I don't have the time to spend crafting witty response and careful rhetoric. I try, but then again, I have people coming by my cube and like to see if I'm working or not, so that effects my time spent in posting responses. So bare with me, if I say something wrong please interrupt the conversation if possible. I'll apologize now for my many future mistakes.

Ok, I have a question for Sagar. How powerful are vampires in your world. Let's say on a scale from 1 to 10 in the undead world, where do they rank?
Some thoughts of mine...
I think we should ask Scorpio for some vampire advice or use our knowledge skills to come up with a vampire kit. Overall, I'm thinking, garlic, some wooden stakes (2 per person), and some large vials of holy water.
If it's not a vampire and a lower form of undead, cool. We can handle that, but remember we were lucky with the wight. We might not be as lucky with this guy.
Plus I think those shrieks are going to be fear causing, so any resistance to fear would be handy.

And no chance on the super soaker. You don't have access to the required raw materials.

Since Play-by-post games move so much more slowly, I've been toying with the idea of increasing exp. The DM guide suggests up to doubling exp for slower moving games.
I was pondering a 50-100% bonus. What do you think?
Asharad
11th September 2008, 10:47 AM
I don't have a lot of experience so I don't really know either way.
So far it seems reasonable, we've been on- essentially- one adventure and gained a level.
EricStratton
11th September 2008, 10:49 AM
Up to you, Sagar. I'm having fun so far. Leveling is always fun but, like Ash said, we've had one adventure and gained a level. I don't have a problem w/ that.
Lycos
11th September 2008, 10:58 AM
Well, I know the level gains will slow down quite a bit. I would not have a problem with accelerated xp. I wouldn't mind forgetting about xp and you tell us when we level. I'm really not a stickler for the books, so I won't be pointing out pages and demanding that we lose levels because the rules say we should be two levels lower.
I've also been in campaigns where we've started out at higher levels to match the type of game that the DM wanted us to be in.
Shiz
11th September 2008, 11:30 AM
Levelling in itself doesn't add fun other than the fact that 4E is new so levelling in 4E is new. That said, you could boost encounter exp a bit and then supplement with "story" exp. Double is overkill, though. Maybe +25% at the most.
DinbinFanfoom

The normal rule of thumb is 10 encounters = 1 level with significant traps = 1 encounter. I figure level 1 took about 8 encounters - though one could argue that the first battle was almost 2 and the last battle was close to two.
I think I'll aim for a level every 6-8 significant encounters. Taking out a couple rats or a vampire minion wouldn't really count as significant to you guys.
Lycos

Clean out the bad guy's underground lair in V&V? New base!
Clear out the old alchemist's abode (replete with disarming the giant catapult ball scribed with an 30' radius effect Death sigil that had crashed through the roof into the basement) in RM? New base!
Clear out the dragon's lair and steal his horde out from under out paladin's corrupt church? New ... well no, that actually brought about a schism and the attempted excommunication of said paladin. Fortunately he was really tight with his god and the church sort of came out on the losing end of that argument.

I would like to upload the following to the data base, to use as my guy.
And yes, fandango has a mohawk.
Also, if you could list places I can steal appropriate sprites and upload a zipped file of the ones we are using, I'll occasionally make new ones.

I figured we could make standard wooden floors and the walls would just use the floor background with a line running N/S or E/W.
It's working ok as is, though.
DinbinFanfoom
12th September 2008, 02:22 PM
Asharad:
I've uploaded "rogue-mohawk1.gif" and made it live. In addition to uploading the file, that actually entails making an entry in a DB table on the server, so it isn't something that can be done by someone simply uploading sprites. So they'll likely have to continue to go through me until I code some sort of import process.
Sagar:
The problem is that the floor itself would be the background and the "line" would be some sort of foreground... which is where the characters are. So the problem is this: 1) you could place a "wall" as an item/npc/character on top of a background (the floor) but no other sprite could occupy the space or 2) you could make the wall part of the background (part of the floor sprite) but that would mean creating an iteration of the tile for every possible floor/wall combination.
That said, I'm sure I can create some wooden floors right away.
Edit: Four basic wooden floors are in now. I'll get working on some rudimentary walls.

I'm going to be out of town tomorrow. Shiz, you wanna handle Baladir? He has everything. No daily powers have been used.

A disembodied voice says, "Ned.. don't forget that you have no weapons and armor... and you will be needing one soon...."
This message brought to you by your friendly neighborhood DM.....
<looks off panel, like they do in a comic strip>
What, you gettin tired of the talk? Want us to move this along? Oh, alright... I was getting to that point, really. Was gonna be my next line or two. Really.

It could be a real ghost.
It could be someone using that area to look out into the ocean for some reason. Who knows.
Ash, do you want to bluff our exit if we head for town? Maybe it would behoove us to have the people here think we aren't coming back?

I have a question. Is there a way in this combat system where we can move back and draw our enemy towards us without them getting free attacks?
Shiz
29th September 2008, 12:05 PM
You can shift one square without drawing an OA, but unless the front line have consecutive initiative, that could leave the last one surrounded. OAs also only apply to melee attacks so if you want to back up, you need to do it before the enemy engages.
The problem with that is Brun and Baladir have no ranged weapons (something you guys can fix if you want) so we lose a lot of firepower by retreating.

I think Warlords have ways to move people during combat, too.
But you don't have one of those either.

Brun has an encounter (or is it daily?) power called Covering Strike or somesuch that allows an ally to shift two spaces for free, out of harms way.

Well, I do it in Tae Kwon Do, but I'm not coordinating with another person, but I do draw my opponent back as the fight progresses. But it seems difficult to do in this combat system. Let's say that Brun and I are a little to far forward, we find it easier to move back 5'. Can we do that without taking a penalty?

You can always shift 1 square (5') as a move without penalty.

Ok. That should work then.

I can move something like three squares without a penalty, but thats more of an escape mechanism than a combat tactic (given my squishyness)

Don't tase... er... burn me bro!
:D
I guess my death wouldn't have been on Baladir's mind, the paladin that he is, if he didn't know I was in there? Hmmm... and couldn't have screamed being gagged. Nor scrambled out.
Yeah, burning the house down would've sucked.
Besides, then you would've had a flaming giant weasel running out to attack you.

Ya know... if it should jump on his face again.

And make sure you add the "Ned run through with my Bastard Sword" sprite because I think it'll look really good at about the same time.
Ooops, can't see. Spider on my face! :lowlol: :D

We got a ruling on the Hold Person scroll:
Wis vs Will
Hit: Dazed 2+wis (6) rounds
Miss: 1 round
Dazed = gives CA to all enemies, can do one action
I assume the range is 10 and it takes a std action to read the scroll, minor action to open it.

With two folks between me and the door, will I be able to get in the room and do anything on my first round?

Yes. You can move past allies at any time. You cannot, however, end your turn in the same square.

As mentioned in the round thread - I've got a fire power but it's my encounter power and only targets 1 enemy.

I'm still foggy on this... the grubs that are crawling around on the floor (I presume) can't be hurt by anything BUT fire? If the remaining grubs are still on the cadaver, then let's torch it, no problems there (hey, free light!) but Baladir is another issue. The potion is probably the best way to go. I know I (and I think Baladir) have a healing potion, but I forgot who had the disease ones...
Shiz
1st October 2008, 11:21 AM
The problem is that there is no cure disease spell that we can bang out in 4E, only the ritual which none of use are high enough level for. Rot grubs are old sk001!

Sagar

The grub on the ground can be easily squished if they haven't made it back to the body (and I rolled that none did).
The ones in Baladir must be killed with fire - or with a really hot weapon. The sunrod is not hot - more like a battery powered fluorescent bulb.
I would assume many of you have torches... If you can get them lit fast enough.

Hey sagar,
Will you tell us when we missed stuff? Like what and where?
After the point of no return, that is.
Like the pack we just burnt up. Was there anything cool in there?
Asharad
1st October 2008, 12:49 PM
Also, what happens if our party wipes.
Are we just...finished? Does Sagar have to figure out some way we lose but aren't totally done (like in the PA podcasts).
Years of MMORPGS have made the permadeath prospect an unusual one, I'm just curious as to how D&D handles it (or more specifically, how we handle it).
Sagar

If you actually die, you can be rezzed (for a hefty fee) if it's done quickly enough. That or you make a new character. This version of DnD makes it easier to not-quite-die than in previous versions.
I can tell you when you miss stuff if you want.
Oh, and someone give me a number between 0 and 21... I need to check something ...
