You follow the directions given and arrive at a nice, if modestly sized, abode next to a large hardware, tackle and fishing goods store.

An elderly lady answers your knock and you ask after the Baron.
As she invites you in, you hear a loud, jovial voice hollar out "Who is it, Ma?" She hollars back "Some kids looking for the Baron".
You hear some low voices and then, "Send them in, Manchester's been expecting them."

As you walk into the study, you see the Baron and a hefty, jovial looking fellow - somewhat balding and the proud possessor of a prominent double chin. The Baron invites you in and there are hand shakes all around.

The Baron turns to the man and introduces you, "Lord Mayor, these are the winners of our contest in Bracken. May I introduce Baladir, Paladin of Pelor; Trask, Acolyte of Sehanine; Amaril of the Eladrin; Brunhilde, a fearsome warrior with an axe; and Fandango, a gifted man of the streets much like yourself."

Turning to Fandango, the Baron adds, "The Lord Mayor Strom Turnbull here was a rogue and a scoundral for years before turning to less honest work - now he is a merchant and politician."

Mayor Turnbull laughs and claps the Baron on the back. "How can I get them to trust me after an introduction like that?" To the party, he offers "Would any of you like a beer to wash away a bit of road dust?"

Not waiting for a reply, he hollars, "Ma! We need.. "

He is interrupted by the older lady coming in with a tray full of frothy mugs saying, "I know, I know.. " She immitates his hearty voice, " We need something stout to wash the road dust from our throats."

Smiling, she offers beer to the Baron, then to the party, then pretending to forget her husband, she turns to leave.

"You can't POSSIBLY mean to leave me here dying of thirst, Woman!"

She winks at the party before giving her husband the last beer and departing.

I use my utility spell (Astral Speech) to boost my diplomacy skill.

Baladir, greets the mayor. "You have a really nice home here Lord Mayor. And I appreciate your hospitality."

Baladir begins to report to the Baron.

"Baron, I believe that there was more to our recent mission for you than what met the eye. We have reason to believe that your auguries were manipulated in order to send us out and do the bidding of an agent of evil. Please let me explain what has happened in total first before we discuss it further."

Baladir explains about what had happened in the original encounter with the orcs. And his feeling that the Half Orc didn't know how he got there.

Then we'll explain the encounter with the Giant Wolves and the hole with the underground temple. I'll explain all about what happened down in the temple. Then we'll go into the encounter with Malacon. And we'll show him the snuffers and the rob and the chest. We can show him the location of the temple again if he would like.

As you settle into the offered seats with your drinks, the Baron speaks.
"That was find work you did with the Ambassador from Defiance. You showed an unusual degree of tact and discretion in addition to the valor and skill you showed during the Competition. Lieutenant Crispin spoke very highly of you all. I would like to say on his behalf, though, that neither he nor any of us knew exactly what you would find there. We only knew it was something you and you alone could handle successfully."

"Ambassador Kalak and I had a very productive negotiating session. Kalak and his son have returned to Defiance - with a retinue of guards, of couse - to gather their trade goods. I need to head to the Capital tomorrow morning to arrange our part of the bargin. Kalak expressed interest in having you all as part of the trade mission guards. I told him, of course, that I could only request your presence, but if you are all available in 4 weeks, you might consider it. That is, if you want to be the first non-residents to set foot in that mythical city."

"But you have taken rather longer than expected getting here. I assume, therefor, that the orc battle was not all you ran into during your trip back.
I'd love to hear the tale from when Lt. Crispin left.."

Seeing your glances at the Lord Mayor, the Baron says, "Strom and I are old friends. You may speak freely in front of him."

The Baron takes the robe and examines it. Looking worried, he stands and paces a bit before looking somewhat sheepishly at the Lord Mayor.
"I did say they could speak freely, didn't I?"

The Lord Mayor chuckles, "That you did, Sire. It does sort of make sense, though."

The Baron looks at you all for a long moment and then says to the Mayor, "Aye, it does." Handing you back the robe, he sits down.

"Knowing you, I am sure you've heard rumors about the Contest already.
Since you've shown such discretion already, I'll think I can trust you with a bit more information. I must ask, however, that what I tell you not be spoken of with anyone else or in populated areas...."

I have to run to a lunch meeting. I'll try to finish this later today.

Also, once this conversation is finished. I will ask the baron if he knows why Lord Felstaff in Bracken would want hippogriff eggs?

"Lord Felstaff and his family have been restless for years. They aren't satisfied with the estates they have. Instead, they have been trying for years to increase their holdings - usually through nefarious means. The good thing is, Lord Felstaff is inherently lazy. While he plans and complains, he doesn't actually DO much of anything.

"A few months ago, my agents discovered that Felstaff had accumulated a fairly sizable stash of gold. Shortly thereafter, we discovered that Felstaff's agents were making inquiries with certain less than reputable mercenary companies.

" We had planned to have the Contests for some time. I decided to move the Contests to Bracken, though, to drain the excess and temptation inducing funds from Felstaff's coffers and redistribute it, as it were, to the surrounding merchants, farmers and craftsmen.

"I was bothered, though, about why it was Felstaff was actually taking action on one of his schemes. I wonder if this entity you discovered may have been at least partially to blame.

"Perhaps you should take these artifacts to the temple and see if they can shed any light on them. What do you think, Strom?

Strom starts, apparently lost in thought, "Oh. uhm No. Not the temple. Zarc is a charlatan and a crook - not that I can say that in public, mind you. Most of the people here still go to his church. Though that young priest working for him isn't half bad..
No, I'd suggest you take these to the old man. He was an true priest and scholar of Pelor before he was kicked out of Bracken by Felstaff's father. He still has most of the best tomes from the church hidden in that shack of his. No, I suggest you start with the old man and leave Zarc out of this."

"Of course.. it will probably take him a few days to research it all. And your team here will need something to do...

Would you mind if I borrow them for a few days?"

The Baron laughs, "You'd have ask them. They don't officially work for me, you know."

The Baron stops short, "One thing. Did you tell anyone in Bracken about the creature you found.. or show any of the artifacts you brought?"

Lycos

"Baron, you have been forthright with us and we appreciate it. I wouldn't have been surprised if it had turned out you hoped to use 'heroes' to advance a political agenda.

"I think I speak for all of us when I say we all want to help the Duchy and I am convinced that remains your primary goal as well.

"I also feel safe in saying that our group would enjoy being the first outsiders to visit Defiance, but since that is some weeks away, we are amenable to helping the mayor."

Agreed. Are we still in the mayor's house? If so:

The Baron slaps his forehead with his hand and says, "Where are my manners.
It occurs to me that you have not officially accepted my offer as unofficial agents. I believe it only polite to all you to say yes, no or even to put me off with some polite waffling. So, are you willing to help out as unofficial agents of the Barony to help maintain peace and stability in the land?"

(your response here).

The mayor listens about the hippogriffs and says "His offer is mighty low. Hippogriff eggs go for about 1000g each. They are used by collectors to show off their collections and by others as guards or as mounts for warriors.

Personally, I never had any problems with Hippogriffs. They keep to their lands and leave others alone unless they attack the 'griffs or try to steal their eggs. You do what you want, though. There's alot of money to be had there."

The Baron responds, "Interesting. I wonder if Lord Felstaff has even more cash than we thought or whether he was counting on the profits from sales to Defiance...
No matter. As you have probably discovered already. You will be offered jobs by many parties. I will not say what you can and can't do. I only ask that you try not to do anything that will create unrest or harm innocents in the Barony. Beyond that, your actions are your own and subject to your own discretions."

Sagar

The Baron waits to see if all of you agree before proceeding...

Given the responses so far, I will assume all will agree.

"Excellent!" says the Baron. "As an initial retainer, let me give you this "He hands each of you a pouch with 50g in it." I am afraid I don't have access to my treasury at the moment or it might be more.

As my agents, I will call upon you from time to time to perform tasks for which you are better suited than my militia. Whether that be because of your unique skills or because I need to maintain an appearance of non-partisanship or need to be unaffiliated with the action in any official capacity.

You will not be required to undertake any task I request. If you decide you do not wish to perform a task, I ask only 2 things. First, that you tell me up front and second, that you not discuss the task with any others. My father and grandfather charged me with the well being of these lands and it's peoples. I need assistance, sometimes, to assure that. I am glad you have decided to help."

The Baron stands up, "If there are no more questions, I need to go see the rest of the town council..."

He pauses to see if you have any other questions.

"If you need to sell stuff, I'd suggest going to Scorpio's shop. He'll give you the best prices and he sells the kind of stuff you might need. I'd like to talk to you about our town issue, but I need to run to the council meeting as well. How about I meet you at the Whale just after supper. The town might as well hear me ask you to investigate that old haunted house. Not that it's haunted, mind you, but a powerful lot of 'em think it is and it won't hurt me any to be seen asking the Yound Heros to investigate it. I hope you don't mind me sliding a little politicing into our business. I'll buy the first round after dinner.. "

The old man's hut is on the eastern side of town, near the fishing huts of thr "poor" section of town. As you walk up to the hut, you see an old man mending nets on the porch. You stop outside his hut.. he continues mending his net.

After a few moments, Baladir politely clears his throat.
The man continues to work on his net. Baladir (insight 20+) realizes this is a test and waits patiently.

After 2 minutes, the old man looks up and says, "What"

Baladir tells him the party has an issue and the Mayor and the Baron sent them to the Old Man.

The Old Man grunts, stands up, and walks inside. Baladir (correctly) interprets this to mean the party should follow and does.

Inside, the hut is neat and tidy and small. One room serves at kitchen, bedroom, and dining area. Behind a curtain, you see the rest of the hut houses a small temple to Pelor. The Old Man gestures for you to sit at the table and sits in a chair then waits for you to speak.

Who will talk. What will you tell him? What will you show him? Be specific.

Asharad
9th September 2008, 01:12 PM
I'm up for letting Baladir talk. Followers of pelor and all.

Leave the barron out of it if possible, just we were walking in the woods (maybe we were all on a date) found the temple, went into the temple, ran into a guy named whatever...you know anything about him?

Lycos
9th September 2008, 01:14 PM
I can talk. (How much detail do you want?)

We can introduce ourselves. I will introduce myself as a paladin of Pelor.

"I am honored to be with what I have heard 'a distinguished fellow worshiper of Pelor'. "

We have some information on an undead entity known as Malacon. We found him in an underground temple not too far from here. <At this point, I will tell him the details of our adventure starting with our entry into the temple. We'll tell him everything. And we'll show him the robe. And we'll tell him that he claims that he controlled others outside of the temple, and that I believe him to a point that he was controlling the ambassador. I will tell him about the confusion of the ambassador in ending up where we had found him.

I'll wait for his response after that. If he wants more information, I give it to him.

The old man's stony visage changes as you speak - becoming more animated and, if you read it correctly, worried.

"Hmmm.. a disturbing tale to be sure..."

He examines the robe and the snuffers carefully for some moments then looks up. "This robe is designed for containment, for weakening, of some great power. The snuffers are the most elaborate I've seen. These are custom matched to a specific set of ritual candles. Did you see any candles or tapers? Also, you said there were bodies on biers there too? Can you describe them?"

And is there anything else you can remember? Any other details?"

Lycos
9th September 2008, 02:11 PM
Yes, there were some magical tapers and candles that we used these snuffers on. We did some close inspection of them. I can't recall all the details. Our friends Amaril and Trask did most of the examining of their magical inscriptions.

<Let's Trask and Amaril speak>

As for the bodies, I can tell you what the one looked like that I took this holy symbol off of. I spent a good amount of time praying over him, so I have a good mental image of him.

<I describe what he was wearing, what he looked like, etc.>

Trask saw the other one from Sehanine. He could best describe him.

<Let's Trask speak again>

The other two were dust if I recall correctly and their holy symbols were melted to be unrecognizable.

I describe how the door to Malacon's prison was marred by a fallen pillar. There were symbols on the door. Amaril and Trask again saw them the best.

<Let's Trask and Amaril speak>

Trask also tried to read the symbols and writing on the biers.

<Let's Trask speak>

We also found these 4 opals from the sand that was once the door.

<Hands them over to the old man to look at if he cares>

Also Malacon used the two dead bodies as his minions to fight us.

Sure, keep everything for now.

We could even go back to the temple if you thought that would help.

Years... Someone mentioned it.

The old man sinks pulls the robe over and begins studying the runes in detail, pausing occassionally to sketch a rune on some paper.

He seems complete absorbed and doesn't acknowledge your exit.
Your next stop is the Leather Gauntlet - a rough goods (adventuring) store run by Scorpio, the guy you met before.

Scorpio is behind the counter and definately has the air of someone who knows how to use the longsword he carries.. and most of the other weapons in the store. He stands about 5'7" tall, with a wiry build, receeding hair, and piercing blue eyes set in a weathered face.

He greets you with a pleasant "Hullo!" and asks what he can do to help.

"'Well, normally I'd only pay about 50% for used weapons but I remember what it's like to start off adventuring so I'll give you.. oh.. 90% value. That's the best I could sell them for so it's break even for me.

"If you find gems, minor magical items, odd furs or devices, old weapons, whatever.. I'd appreciate first shot at 'em. I'm not the richest guy in the area, though, so I can't afford everything.

Oh, I can also change coin if that becomes a need.

And if you need something I don't have here, I can probably get it within a week or two.

Advice is free, if you want it. Good advice, though, may cost you a drink or two at the whale."

Looking around the shop, you see most non-exotic weapons, some armor and robes, blank books (for rituals), ritual components, etc.

Basically, if you are interested in something, just ask. Prices will be as listed in the PHB.

That old place. Well now, I don't know about it being haunted. It sure is creepy though. No one's lived there in nigh on 20 years. Used to belong to an old alchemist mage. Weird sort he was. Unsettling.. but he pretty much kept to himself. Good customer, though. Always having me send away for this or that. Never seemed short of cash.

Anyway, about 20 years ago, he just vanished. No one ever heard from him again. Every year a few brave souls claim they went up to the place on a dare or to find the alchemist's gold or something. All they ever see is an old, abandoned and run-down house.

Well, except there seems to be more and more people lately what's claim to see weird lights and noises coming from the place. I've been by there a few times, though, and I've never seen nothing.

Still, there's them what is making a ruckus about the Mayor ought to go clean the place out for the good of the people and others what say taint nothin' but a lot o' nonsense and a waste of good money sending someone out to check it all out.

My guess is the Mayor is gonna make a big show o' asking you to check it out. I'm betting he can't offer much, if anything for the job though. Some of the biggest naysayers are on the council and they control what little money we got.

I must admit, though.. if I was still adventuring, I might just go take a look. Not bad PR and there just might still be some gold there somewhere.
At least it will make for many nights of free drinks at the tavern from people wanting to hear the tale.

You want to know about me? Well, I was an adventurer in my youth. A ranger, actually. Spent a lot of time combing the hills and woods all around the barony. After one too many fights with giants and the like, I was splinting my off arm and it suddenly hit me that there were far easier ways to make a livin'. I decided I needed a shop, a good woman, and a quieter life. Well, I got me 2 outta 3. Let me know if you find any good women wantin' an old mountainman... " he laughs.

The Old Man? Dunno what he name is. I don't think anyone does. He's been Old Man for 15.. 18 years. He come down from Bracken. Solid priest of Pelor, he is, though. I figure he musta run afoul of old man Felstaff and got tossed outta the temple there. He don't give his name nor talk about his life before coming here. Matter of fact, he don't talk much at all.

The Baron? Well his family has been runnin' the Barony for almost 150 years now. His great great great.. uhm.. dunno how many greats but a good while back, his ancestor did some service for the old king and was granted title to this area that no one else wanted. He and his people carved the Barony out of the wilderness and have managed to keep it pretty safe ever since. His grandfather was a bit of a loony, but the rest of the Manchester's have been about as solid as the come. Good man, the Baron. One day, people may say he was great. Hard to tell... he's young yet.

The Felstaff's have been what you might call the black sheep of the original settlers. They always felt they got shorted being stuck so far west and they've pretty much had a chip on their shoulders ever since. Always schemeing and conniving, they are. Never seems to amount to much, though. Mostly big talking blowhards if you ask me. Mean people to cross though. In their lands, they pretty much like to do as they want and don't much take kindly to people who get in their way.. unless those people - like the Baron - can force them to take it. People who cross the Felstaffs have a habit of disappearing - or so they say.

There are similar situations in today's world that you can easily tell people in the public eye like each other or not.

Off to the Wading Whale. This is a nice tavern and Inn (I have a map of it if you are interested). It has a large commons room and two private dining rooms, a commons sleeping area (3 sp/night), private single rooms (1g/night) and larger private rooms for 1-2 people for 2g/night. They also have a private grand chamber for 10g / night that is very plush and includes a small banquet. The Baron will be staying in that room tonight.
Your arrival causes a stir and the common room is about half-full (some people already figured you were coming). The barmaid asks what rooms you'd like, when you'd like to eat, and if you'd like to eat in the commons or in a private dinning room.

Lycos

"Brunhilde!? What an amazing set of.. biceps.. you have...
"Trask, wasn't it? You must be the brains of the outfit...
"FANDANGO!!!".. and three teenage girls are ushered back out of the tavern by their fathers...
"But you don't LOOK like a Warlock.. you're WAY too handsome...

... the Mayor walks in with what can only be part of the town council.

"Well, well, well.. if it's not the Young Heros!" He strides forward, pulls up a chair, turns it around and sits astride on it.
"Councilmen, these are the champions I told you about. Perhaps we should put this problem to them and see if they can help us.

"But first, introductions are in order, I think. This is Vlar Horstan, council member and proprietor of this fine establishment.
"I see you've met Scorpio. Shame on you Scopio, for missing the meeting and, more importantly, getting started ahead of us." Scorpio raises his drink and downs it.. the rest of the crowd laughs.

"This is Zarc Fletcher, High Priest of our temple." The Mayor indicates a tall good looking man with blond hair and an almost angelic looking face standing nearby.

"Not sure where the Old Man is. Guess his nets need him more than we do, " more laughs.

"And this is Falmark Holmsteader, master seaman and a fairer man you'll never meet!"
Falmark offers you his hand and say's over the shoulder, "Nicely said, Mayor, but I'm still not buying the first round."

"And lastly," continues the Mayor, "These two aren't part of our official council but they are two of our finest merchants, may I introduce Karlak Scarfton and Kelvin Rorcken." Two men, short and a bit round, nod at you affably.

The townsfolk shift to make room at your table for these dignitaries and the Mayor signals for a round of drinks.

"Now I hate to spoil your first day in our fair town talking business, but we've got an issue that I think your group is uniquely qualified to resolve.

You see, the old Alchemist's place.."

"The Haunted House", someone yells out..

"The 'haunted house' as it were, has been causing some consternation among the townsfolk for some time now.

"It's haunted..." yells someone from the crowd.

"I heard voices there" says another, loudly.

"Yes, as I was saying," cuts in the Mayor, "we'd like you guys to go explore it and prove one and for all that it's..
"Haunted..." tosses in someone.

"it's just an empty house", finishes the Mayor, glaring at the "helpful" person in the crowd.

"But don't go thinking we're gonna make you rich on this," says one of the two merchants, "cause we ain't got alot o' money."

"True," affirms the Mayor, sadly. "We are just a poor little town, here. But I am sure Vlar here would be glad to offer you room and board for free.."
Vlar looks like he'd rather suck a pig, but grimaces and, reluctantly, nods.
'Excellent!" exclaims the mayor. "So, what do you say?"

If you would all be so kind as to stick around for just a bit in case any of us have any questions, we may be able to knock out that middle 10% part...the preperation part I mean! You spend some hours hearing tales of the alchemist, of the house and of all the brave people who claim to have gone there but it's obvious they really haven't.

Later in the evening, though, one guy comes in who really seems to have been there. Apparently he was out hunting one day and developed a powerful thirst. He found himself near the house and decided to see if maybe the old alchemist might have left some wine or booze in his cellar when he departed. He walked in through gaps in the wall and found the house in bad shape. Walking around back, he passed the well and found a door he could enter through. As he started down the stairs to the cellar, he heard ghastly shrieks and piercing screams and ran out of the house chased by a vampire and its evil pack of rats! Believe it when they say that is a haunted house, he avers. There are many grave and horrible dangers in that place!

(He can give you a general idea of the layout of the house but not until I get home and get the map. Honestly, though, it won't help enough to be worth the trouble.)

You wake up the next morning and are greated with a feast in the tavern.

Belly's full, you head out the west road towards the Haunted House (leaving the horses since it's only about 4 miles out of town.).
You departure is somewhat of an event with admiring townsfolk and hero-worshipping kids (and some teenagers) following you out of town and well down the road. As you travel, though, people begin heading back to town and their duties. The kids, though, follow you most of the way..that is, until the house comes into sight. At that point, the last of them slip away back to town...

The haunted house stands on the cliff about 70 feet above sea level and about 80 feet from the cliff edge. The 6' high stone wall surrounding the garden has partially collapsed in a number of places. The main gate, of ornate and heavy metal construction, is still functional and stands partially open. The garden itself is overgrown - showing no sign of care for many years.

The house is 35' high from ground level to the roof ridge; the roof is peak-pointed and gabled, with several holes from missing slates.

You are now standing on the road outside the main gates...

We'll also put the ear plugs in. Ok everyone, until we get the shrieking under control, we are going to need to watch each other very well. Don't get out of sight of each other if we can help it. And constantly watch what's going on.

The problem is, if we run into something that's voice causes us issues, it's too late.

What's the construction of the house? I'm hesitant to use the fire bombs if the place is made of wood, cause we'll burn it down.

I'll keep my earplugs handy but not use them. I figure we'll get a saving throw.

As for the construction, I'm not sure we are going into the house. The guy said there was a trap door in the back. If it looks like we are going into a wooden structure then I won't take the Baladir cocktail. If we are going into some stone/earthen underground area. I'll bring one along.

Amaril will use the plugs too. He's not the scout and can pop them out whenever (minor or free action?).

Sagar

Minor action to pop them out.

As far as you can tell from outside the gate, the outer wall of the house is brick, but the roof is wooden with slate tiles and it appears the inside of the house is wooden as well.

Baladir and Amaril have ear plugs. Trask, Brun, and Fan do not.
So now what.. the gate is there, the wall is fallen in spots, the garden is overgrown but passable. The house, from what you could see as you walked up, appears to be shaped like a squatty T and is probably 2 stories tall with possibly an attic.

I favor the second floor in daylight because:

1) less likely to be trapped
2) easier to climb in daylight

Trask is VERY VERY skeptical of the vampire talk. He would be happy to just burn the place to the ground and then dig out the trap door, but since it seems like the group is excited about becoming home owners, he would favor a non-traditional entrance.

If Brun goes up and attaches a rope, then the DC gets easy for everyone else. We could even split up and have two people at the door - the non-dark seeing people.

The front door opens onto a musty, dirty entrance hall. To your left a
corridor leads into the west wing of the house. On either side of the
corridor opening the walls are bare but some pieces of wood in the
corner near the window indicate that a small wooden table or chair
once stood there. Ahead of you, another corridor leads towards the
rear of the house. To your right a staircase climbs to the next storey,
reaching it at a balcony which overlooks the hall along its north and
west sides; the stairs appear safe to climb though the balcony rail is
broken in several places. Under the stairs at the rear of the hall a
third corridor leads east.

The interior is very dilapidated, damp and with patches of harmless
mould everywhere. Cobwebs festoon the place; the woodwork is
generally rotten, while dust and dirt are thick and rubbish is scattered
about in profusion. Plaster, fallen from ceilings and walls, lies on the
floor in several places; many floorboards are loose and some are
missing entirely, while there is liberal evidence of rodent and insect
infestation. Many rooms have fireplaces and chimneys that show no
signs of recent use. The ceilings are 10' high. The passageways are ~ 5' wide.

2. Stairs up

4. Door - wooden

Since you can in behind the group, the people ahead of you have disturbed the dust to the extent that you realize it's impossible to see any tracks, had there been any. Sagar

After Trask examines the stairs and surrounding area, the three of you check out the west hallway. As you do, Baladir and Fandango enter the room.

To the west, the hallway extends about 45' and ends at a door. There are also doors in the north and south walls. The hallway is about 5' wide and 10' high. The doors appear to be normal wooden doors and are 4' wide and about 7' tall.

What will your marching order be and do you have a standard plan for checking / opening doors?

Lycos

I suggest the following plan for searching the rooms.

Fandango listens at the door and checks for traps. Brun opens the door. I'll look inside, and no one steps in until we give the all clear.

No door is left unchecked behind us.

And have Fandango check for traps along the way down the hall and do perception checks.

Does that sound right?

Either way, after we determine if it is trapped or no, I will untrap it (if necessary (+10) and unlock it (+10).

Sagar
12th September 2008, 12:18 PM
The two of you find no traps.

Taking your time, you unlock the drawer (take 10 + 10 vs DC 20).

Inside you find a bunch of documents written in common. Shuffling quickly through them, you see they are basically worthless - receipts for deliver of various chemicals and lab equipment.

Looking back into the drawer, you don't see anything else (9+5 vs DC 15) but Trask does (roll 19 + skill). Checking the small anomaly he saw, you find a hidden compartment. No traps, no locks.. so you open it and find a small glass vial wrapped in cloth. In the vial is a watery, rose colored liquid with a spicy aroma.

Brunhilde, the chimney chick, checks out the south wall. Despite her best efforts, she finds nothing more than rock, dirt, soot, and ash there.

General alchemy stuff.

Yeah, we're not alchemists. It would be hard for us to know.

Amaril (27 arcana) determines from the color and smell, that this is a Cure Disease potion. He thinks it has 2 doses in it.

Who wants to hold onto it?

Give it here. Let's go to the West door and pull our standard SWAT team routine.

I almost forgot.

I have 4 holy water vials. If anyone wants some they can have it. I'll hang onto 2. Let Amaril and Fandango have the other 2? I'm assuming that Brun prefers to hit them. :D

You go to the west doorway. You look, listen, examine and find no locks, no traps and hear nothing beyond the door.

Brun and Baladir throw the door open and find what looks to be a general living area. A door in the north wall leads onto a small paved patio, the paving now cracked and over-run with weeds. There is a pile of refuse in the southeast corner. Otherwise, the room is bare.

Well, except for the 5 rats that look up at your entrance.

I'll stay put and ready Eldritch Blast for the first rat/swarm that I get a clear shot on.

EB: +3 (CHA) + 1 (1/2 level) + 1 (Sun Rod) vs Reflex (am I missing any bonuses?); 1d10 + 5 (CHA, 1/2 level, Sun Rod)

Round 1 Trask:

Sting giant rat 2 from behind Baladir (+6 vs REF, d8+5) unless I don't have line of sight, in which case I will defer until Baladir's move and target any giant rat I can see.

Waiting on rat formation for Baladior.

Fandango the swift leaps into action, sliding smoothly past his companions and into the room. With a special flourish reserved only for stinky rats, he flips the Dagger of Pure Awesomeness as the unsuspecting dire rat.
DOPA glitters silently through the air before striking deeping into the rat's chest (natural 20 - crit hit, 4+16+9+3). The rat staggers and is bloodied and reeling.

Trask fires a sting at one of the giant rats, his bolt passing completely through the rat's neck (16+6 vs Ref 16), killing it instantly (12 damage).

Amaril slides forward and, sighting the dire rat, engulfs it in a dire blast (natural 20), burning it severly (10+5+1d6 (3))

The remaining giant rats surge forward and attack. Giant rat 1 misses Brunhilde (natural 1). Giant rat 3 bites Fandango (14+6 vs AC 17) for 3 damage.

Dire rat 2 staggers towards Fandango, nipping him (19+4 vs AC 17, 6 damage, lose 1 healing surge) and Fandango feels weakened.

Brunhilde swings her axe in a reaping strike at the giant rat facing her. She (10+9 va AC 15) hits the giant rat, her swing slicing it completely in two (6+6 damage).
