When last we met, the party was in the kitchen and preparing to mount the stairs. Fandango, after an honest and understandable misunderstanding, re-buckled his pants.
With some difficulty, you climb the stairs to the second floor. There, you come out on a landing.
Along the north wall of this area a staircase descends to ground floor
of the rear of the house. The treads appear to be insecure.
Another staircase along the east wall climbs to the upper level. This
has mostly collapsed - only the lowest six steps are still intact and
there is no easy access to the hole in the ceiling to where the staircase
used to lead. A heap of rotten timber lies in the northeast corner.
There is a window on the west wall and a hallway on the west side of the south walls extends back into the house.

Sagar, just in case you need me to say this, we are all watching the floor and ceiling as closely as possible. It is real obvious that there may be soft spots, and we are going to be inspecting and testing the floor carefully as we proceed.

We're probably doing a poor job of keeping track of our surges, considering we're pulling more than one encounter per day now.

24th September 2008, 02:04 PM
Fandango and Trask move up to check the two southern doors.
Neither door is locked or, apparently, trapped. There are no sounds coming from either room.
Trask does note, however, disturbances in the dust coming from the south, up the hallway and to the northern door. It appears as though someone has come this way recently and tried to cover their tracks.
Lycos
24th September 2008, 02:12 PM
Continue with opening the door and looking in as usual procedure.
Sagar
24th September 2008, 02:15 PM
You cautiously open the door and inside you see... junk.
This room appears to have been used for storage. A large oak chest
stands under the window, its lid closed. Elsewhere in the room are
three wooden chairs, all broken, two splintered wooden buckets and
a mildewed sack. Just inside the door is a bundle of what looks like
clothing; this bundle carries no dust and appears to have been put
here recently.
Asharad
24th September 2008, 02:21 PM
Perception on the bundle and the trunk.
I got a feeling someone is hiding in the trunk.
Lycos
24th September 2008, 02:23 PM
My vote is to quickly check this room for people, and if none then we move to the other room where the tracks lead to. Leave a person in the hall to watch our back. We can come back once we find this person.
Sagar
24th September 2008, 02:32 PM
The bundle looks relatively new.
The trunk looks very old and dusty with no signs of recent use.
Asharad
24th September 2008, 02:34 PM
I'll examine the bundle to see exactly what it is. Open it up and such.
Lycos
24th September 2008, 02:35 PM
Fandango, you want to check out the trunk? I'll watch the hall as the others check for someone hiding somewhere in that room.

Fandango carefully searches the chest. He finds no locks nor traps nor any evidence that this trunk has been touched or moved in decades. Opening it (with his hostile friends arrayed protectively around him), he finds that it is filled with air. Looking farther, he finds no hidden areas within the chest. It's just a big, empty chest.
The sack, on the other hand, contains old rotted clothing.
The bundle of clothes seems to be just that. It contains a shirt, pants, belt, good boots, and a variety of personal effects. A small pouch in the bundle contains about 11g worth of coins. All of the clothing seems relatively new and of the type you might see in the village on any given day.
Lycos
24th September 2008, 04:36 PM
Unless someone has something they want to try, I would say that we go to the door to the South at K9, and perform the usual SWAT tactics. Also, we can have Fandango check around the corners at J10, just in case.
We'll obviously take the 11 gold for now.
Feel free to interrupt me at any time. I'm just trying to move things along. We tend to wait a long time if we ask, "Is everyone ok if we do X?".
Sagar
24th September 2008, 05:56 PM
Question: Is someone going to take the bundle of clothes? And are you going to the south door or follow the tracks as someone suggested earlier?
DinbinFanfoom

Brun will take the clothes. So if we find someone running around nekkid' we'll know who they belong to.
Sagar
24th September 2008, 07:25 PM
Brun takes the clothes. B&B move down to the south door.
Trask peeks around the corner (map updated) and sees the stairs down to the entry room and hallways to the east and west (and more doors).
He also notices (perception natural 20) that the hallway heading east looks unsafe. The tracks seem to go across the unsafe area.

I read it wrong. I assumed that the foot steps went into this door. Let's continue with the search as normal with this door. This door might lead to interconnecting rooms that don't make it necessary to use the hallway too.
Sagar
25th September 2008, 10:34 AM
Opening the door, you see a large bedroom, now decaying and dirty. Damp mould covers portions of the walls and ceiling and rubbish is strewn liberally round the floor. In the centre is a single mattress which has been badly torn and from which the stuffing protrudes. Under the window is a large wooden chest, the timbers split, its lid closed.
Light streams into the room from a window on the east wall and a large fireplace is on the south wall.
You see no signs of occupation or foot prints in this room. The dust seems undisturbed.
Lycos
25th September 2008, 10:43 AM

25th September 2008, 11:03 AM
Sigh. Fine, Fandango and Brun can "check" the mattress. The rest of us will wait outside. I swear, you two.
Lycos
25th September 2008, 11:05 AM
All I want to know is who is going to stick their face in the fireplace this time??? :D
Sagar
25th September 2008, 11:17 AM
In the mattress, which is musty and lumpy, you find nothing but stuffing.
The chest is not locked or trapped and opens easily. Inside is a pile of moldy ragged clothing - nothing of value - and a bundle of documents which also appear moldy and stained.
Baladir sticks his head in the fireplace but fails to discover any more friends. Nor does he see anything hidden there.
The clothing bundle Trask wants to see is as described before. It is of sound make, not exceptional or costly, but well made and functional. With your superior perception, though, you realize it probably belonged to a male human, approximately 5'7" - 5'9" tall who was right handed, had pork for dinner and had blue or possibly hazel eyes.
Fandango, with his superior athletics, is pretty sure he could jump the rotten part of the floor outside with both eyes closed and both legs tied.
Asharad
25th September 2008, 11:19 AM
But I don't have to tie my legs, right?
Amaril should check out the documents.
We should be on the lookout for a couple of long boards so we can make a bridge across the rotted section if there isn't a way around it.
Asharad
25th September 2008, 11:21 AM
Also, I have an idea.
Obviously there is someone here. What if we hid in the hallway and then I, loudly and with much bluffing, had a conversation where we all agreed there wasn't anything here, we should just go back to the village, tell them we cleared the place out, get our gold and them do some wenching.
You know, to draw whoever it was out.

If the party wishes, Brun will leap the bad floor too. Flushing out the evidently present "somebody" would be normally good, but given the fact that we'll likely be lead into traps, probably not a good idea.
PS: I'm not sure if leaping is athletics or acrobatics. IIRC, the podcast intimated that acrobatics might be more specialized things like walking a tightrope, tucking and rolling, etc.
Asharad
25th September 2008, 11:48 AM
I've got a skill called "bluff" and a huge bonus to it. It's designed for situations like this.
We don't know who this person is, but they carry clothes around with them in a pack so apparently they don't live here. We have no way of knowing if they know this place or not. But we haven't seen a lot of evidence of humanoid residency, unless the giant ****ing weasel and the centipedes were their pets. They didn't set off the yelling trap, so maybe they just never go into that room, ever. but their live in a hovel, which would indicate they aren't sophisticated enough to have set that trap themselves.
How will standing in the hallway we're already in lead to us being led into traps.
Worse case scenario is it doesn't do anything. best case scenario is, whoever this bundle carrying hobo is, comes back out the grab their stuff and we grab them. This hallway is perfectly set up for us to pull an ambush.
DinbinFanfoom
25th September 2008, 11:50 AM
We could loudly discuss leaving some of our loot here in this apparently safe and sound room (maybe in the chest?) and while a couple of us noisily retreat the way we came, the rest can lay in ambush in this room.
Sagar

Brun will pry up the boards.
You try to pry up the loose boards that were under the chest but the job is harder than you imagined.. probably because they are still under the chest.
After this DUH moment, you move the chest and a few boards come up easily.. revealing a small cavity under the floor that contains a small pouch. Not seeing any obvious traps, you grab the bag and open it to find 4 small gems (25g each).
Amaril, meanwhile, has been looking through the papers. Most of the documents appear to be old letters related to the original purchase of the house - but the details are stained or mildewed into obscurity.
One sheet near the bottom, however, is different. Amaril (22 arcana) identifies it as a clerical scroll of hold person.

The boots are just old, cracked boots and basically worthless.
The cloak is as described - old, worn, ragged and stained and would be completely uninteresting if not for the yellow mold on the inside liner which emits a cloud of spores when you handle inspect the cloak.
Fandango and Amaril each get a faceful - Amaril (ST 5+3 con vs DC 15) breathes the spores deep into his lungs and feels them sear his throat all the way down (10 damage) and begins to cough ferociously.
Fandango also inhales the spores (6+2 con vs DC 15) but not as many (4 damage) and also begins trying to hack up a lung
Both are almost incapacited as they cough and choke in the cloud.

Fandango manages to grab Amari's arm and both stagger towards the door. Both (ST 3 and 2) continue coughing as their lungs continue to burn (3 damage ongoing for Amaril and Fandango).
Trask, you can't tell if the cloud, which you believe to be spores of some kind, are poisonous or corrosive. Either could have that effect but the remedies are completely different. On, and when you drop the clothes, you see no spores coming from them. You certainly didn't see the yellow mold that is all over the inside of the cloak.

Sagar, I give them some water to drink from my waterskin in hopes of diluting the effects.
Sagar
25th September 2008, 05:55 PM
The yellow mold "attacked" and poisoned you so, in effect, you are in "combat" but against something you can't attack.
Amaril takes another 3 ongoing damage as he coughs and chokes out obscenities at the rogue. The obscenities seem to work, though, as his lungs clear (ST 19) and the burning subsides. Fandango takes 3 ongoing damage but his lungs continue to burn (ST 9).
After another bout of ferocious coughing, (3 damage), Fandango manages to clear his lungs (ST 10).
Status:
Fandango has taken 10 damage.
Amaril has taken 13 damage.

For the sake of expedience, I will assume you will examine the last room.
Using your normal tactics, Fandango and Trask check out the last door to the west. Like the others, this door is not locked or trapped. Opening the door, you see:
Once perhaps a fine guest bedroom, this is now decayed like the
rest of the house. Rubbish is scattered around; there is some evidence
of rodent infestation and some webs hang torpid in the corners.
A four-poster bed, once a grand piece of furniture, is against
the wall opposite the fireplace. Its woodwork is worm-ridden and the
curtains that once screened the bed are torn and stained. There is no
bed linen, but the carcase of the bed is relatively intact.
There are two windows on the south wall and a window and fireplace on the west wall.
After examining the room, bed, and piles of rubbish, you find nothing of interest or value in this room. The views are good, though. You can see out over the inland sea and over the downs.

With a running start, you clear ((8+10)/5 or 3.6 squares) about 18 feet. Quite impressive.. if a bit noisy. Though not as noisy as the coughing was.

Trask follows.. taking a running start, he slips a bit, but clears the area (4+3 = 7 foot jump).
Lycos runs and jumps (17+4= 21 feet) and clears the area easily.
Amaril leaps easily (12+1= 13 feet) and lands lightly on the opposite side.
Fandango (9+?) also leaps easily across.
There are 3 doors here.
Do you want to start with the far (east) door or the near door?

You throw open the door and see...Another dirty, decaying bedroom without furniture. From the doorwayvthe floor in here does not look particularly safe; some floorboards are missing while others appear to have suffered partial collapse.
You see no one in the room and you are not all that good at following tracks.. (maybe Trask should look before you walk in).
But you do hear noises (muffled thumping and grunting kinda noises) coming from the room to the east.

Fandango moves about the room examining everything in it. In the middle of the western wall, he discovers something very interesting - the first floor.
The rotten floor collapses under him and he falls down into the room below (failed acrobatics check to avoid falling). You take 5 damage - more from raking through the floor than the actual fall. You are pretty adept at avoiding falling damage.

Yeah, but let's look at the facts.
1. Ned is tied up here with no guards whatsoever.
2. Ned and his clothes are placed in an unlocked room with his gold intact. They did not intend on robbing him.
3. Ned is not offering any information about his reasons for being here.
4. Yeah, Ned was hit on the head, but it could be part of a plan to get him in our party.
5. Ned was fine when we opened the door. He was moving around and trying to yell through his gag.
6. Ned heard us through the door, renewing his efforts to get our attention once we were talking. Now he pretends not to be able to put coherent thoughts together. He obviously is holding back information.
7. I don't think this place has undead in it. Who would put their victims in a nest of undead? Plus, who would have the guts to put their victims in the "haunted house"?
No, Ned needs to go to town at the very least.
/ooc This is looking more like a Scooby Doo episode than I originally assumed. :D

The unknown of what's coming up. Adventure, as I used to do. And, as it looks like you are doing. Not so sure I'd recommend this place though. From what I've seen, we should all just head outta here before the place collapses on us all."

You have a very strong feeling that he is telling the truth and is exactly as he appears to be - a guy in the wrong place at the wrong time and got a serious knock on the noggin to show for it.. not to mention being stripped, tied, gagged, and stuffed in an out of the way location for the time being.

And.. and.. ah, my knife? Anything of it? I've had it for so many years, be a shame to lose it like this. Wouldn't mind brandishing it at the brigands who knocked me out. If not, could ya spare at least some small blade to use on 'em?

The party files back out into the corridor and collects around the middle room. Brun already opened the door and Trask looks into the room. This is another dirty, decaying bedroom without furniture. From the doorway, the floor in here does not look particularly safe; some of the floorboards are missing while others appear to have suffered partial collapse.
Just inside the room, Trask sees tracks that go into the room, veer to the west side of the room where the floor looks more solid, and appears to go to the window on the south wall.

Let Trask/Fandango examine the tracks, though if someone left via the window, they're not on this floor anymore, anyway.
Shiz
29th September 2008, 09:07 AM
Wait, I suspect the tracks might be caused by a creature much lower in weight than myself or any of us. Why do we want to follow them to the window, anyway?
If there is something in this house leaving tracks, it isn't in these rooms right now. It is either outside, on the roof, or down the trapdoor. I say we go back to the trapdoor.
Asharad
29th September 2008, 09:47 AM
I'm relatively nimble and have shown I can fall through floors skillfully. I'll check the tracks and make sure whatever it is, isn't hanging on the outside of the house.
Sagar
29th September 2008, 09:57 AM
You follow the tracks to the window. The floor is solid under your feet, but you're pretty sure that the floor to the eastern side of the room is unstable.
Due to the way the house sits on the bluff, and due to the topography of the bluff itself, this window provides the best view in the house of the sea below. You also notice (natural 20) new scratches in the wood of the window sill. These are small and slight and appear to have been made by a metallic object.
You also notice that there was lots of scuffing on the floor immediately in front of window. Not only is all the dust gone, but there are relatively fresh boot scuffs on floor and wall immediately in front of the window.
There is no fireplace in this room nor is there anything else of interest.
/ooc are you going to surge to fix the damage you have now (7pts, per my notes)

Can we check out the rooms we glossed over a little better on the way down. We can back track our steps. I think we're smart enough for that. I just don't want to miss something that could be useful to us in a fight.

You are almost positive that they don't match Neds.
And the scratches are much to small and shallow to have been made by a grappel. This looks more like something was set on the window ledge.

There are not many clear footprints. Mostly it's a track of disturbed dust. Looking closely, you can see footprints coming in and going back out (footprints that are not yours). They seem to mill about in front of the window.

My healing requires the target have a surge to spend. Yours requires that you have a surge to spend.
So I think we are ok, but if Fandango feels a bit worn out, then we can certainly go grab lunch and a nap. I still haven't scribed the Water Walk ritual.
