View Full Version : Adventure with Ventrilo?

There had been some comments awhile back about possibly using Ventrilo and getting everyone together for an occasional supplement to the forums.
Any serious interest in this? I think commentary was that keeping the maps updated in combat might be a bit much, but maybe if we just start with a base map. Folks could even print that out and mark movements as needed? Of course, getting a time for everyone could be just as hard.
Mapping and scheduling aside though, I think it'd be a blast to have everyone together in voice chat for a session.
If we want to try this, I'll see about getting Ventrilo installed, via WINE, on my system this weekend.

I'm up for it, but the last time I mentioned this there was no interest.

I think last time it was buried in an adventure discussion thread.

I would be up for this but we seem to all be available at a time when Vent isn't possible: the workday!

OK, so then we all take a day off at the same time. ;)
Yeah, kinda figured that scheduling might be the biggest issue... but I'd like to try.

What Shiz said. But if we can schedule something in the evening (after 8pm EST when Ethan goes to bed) I can use my "1 hour of gaming time a night" to do it.

Re: scheduling
A weekday other than Friday, and I might be the problem. Generally don't get home til 5pm Pac, move that to 6pm starting next month. Fridays I get home an hour earlier though, with every other one off. Outside of a very few (two?) monthly evening meetings, my schedule is basically open. Weekends, I'll probably be travelling one weekend per month. (but if I get that netbook I want, even that might not be a hindrance!)

I would want to do this on a Friday or Saturday PM. That way I can stay up later and west coast / Lycos timing issues can be handled.

A'right, I've got Ventrilo up and going. Surprisingly easy to get a Windows program to work on my Linux box. Much easier than two years ago.
Made a test connection to the AKS Ventrilo server, worked. Didn't have anyone to test chat with though.

*looks at calendar*
After this weekend, I've got lots of open time on Fri/Sat evenings, so whenever...

We may have to wait until I get back from Hawaii to try this (mid February).
This weekend, I have to travel to Va for my Dad's 70th birthday.
Next weekend, we'll be packing for Hawaii.
The next 3 weekends. I'll be in Hawaii.

Lolz. No, it's more about that dispite the fact that I play often, playing is pretty far down my RL priority list (that goes for computer games in general) so I play as I have time. Most of the time, that's when you guys are all in bed. :P

How long does it take to pack? The whole weekend? And I suppose you have to wash your hair too, right? :lowrazz:

Remember, Dinbin, you post what you do in the daily threads. We *know* you don't have anything else going on except maybe LotRO and WoW. :lowrazz:

Most of my game playing is post 10pm EST, and I never know which nights that will be, and I never know if I'm playing until about 30 mins before. :P

A'right, we're gonna have to talk here. Two weeks at Disney, three in Hawaii... this vacation stuff is getting in the way of gaming.

3 weeks in Hawaii... gotta make sure we don't forget anything and don't let any bag get over 50#. Oh, and we are taking 2 dogs, 7 cats and a bird to Charlotte (Jennifer's aunt is watching them) so we gotta make sure we don't forget anything vital (like food or litter).
The weekend will be spent shopping, washing clothes, finding odd little things you don't use much (like those fluffy eye covers for the plane and the little strap for the sunglasses...).

Here's a tip for packing - Pack half of what you think you'll need (http://www.37signals.com/svn/posts/1268-pack-half-of-what-you-think-you-need). I wish I'd heeded that advice for our trip to HI. I even brought a pair of jeans.
Although we have a washer/dryer in the house and family we can borrow stuff off of so we can usually afford to under pack.

Since we've gone offtopic... I'll echo that one. Lay out everything you want to take. Then put half of it back. Then look at whats left and trim some more from there.
I did two weeks in China with a small-medium suitcase (just larger than what could be carried on) and a small duffel-type bag for carry-on. Quite glad that I trimmed down from the monster suitcase I was first looking at using.

we will have very limited access to a washer / dryer until week 3.
Also, we plan to go to the observatories on Hawaii. When I checked earlier, the wind chill there was below 32F.

We went up to the top of Haleakala so, yeah, it's probably best to pack some "winter" clothes for that.
Still, pack half. ;) :lowlol:
