Ok, so thanks in no small part to my lurking about watching the fun in here from time to time, I've decided that once the apartment work is done, I'm going to get back into D&D.
To that end, I've bought the 4e Core Rulebooks.
And I can't find an answer to what looks like it should be obvious:
- What is [W] in a Power's "Hit" description?
Example:
Hit
2[W] + Strength Modifier
I probably am just overlooking something completely obvious but...

(base) Weapon damage (ie 1d12 for a great axe).

The "devs" have acknowledged that nowhere in the PHB is [W] actually defined. I was guessing until I read the D&D boards.
So as nop wrote, your 2[W] + Strength Modifier example for a character with STR 18 or 19:
longsword 2d8+4
greatsword 2d10+4
dagger 2d4+4

Ahh, so if your weapon were 2d6 (if such a thing exists) then 2[W] would be 4d6?
Thanks - so is it identified in the DMG then?

I don't know if it is identified anywhere in the PHB or the DMG. It was part of the PHB errata I believe.

I have the errata pdf at home. I can email it. I do believe it is available free at the Wizards website, though.

Finally found it - not sure if I have a more recent edition - but it's in the Combat chapter, in calculating damage. Forget exact page.

Weapon Damage Dice:
A [W] in a damage
expression stands for your weapon’s damage dice.
(The weapon tables on pages 218–219 show damage
dice for all weapons.) The number before the [W] indicates
the number of times you roll your weapon dice.
If a power’s damage is “2[W] + Strength modifier”
and you use a dagger (1d4 damage), roll 2d4, then add
your Strength modifier. If you use a heavy flail (2d6
damage) with the same power, roll 4d6, then add your
Strength modifier.
pg 276
and yes i do the have pdb on pdf and open at all times.... copy/paste is my friend
