This is on page 268 of the PHB, for reference.
I've got a power that is an immediate reaction.
How do I declare I'm going to use this? I mean, do I need to declare it on my turn? Because since the trigger is someone else in my party getting attacked, I really can't (because I don't know).

1) Someone gets attacked
2) It is triggered (if you wish, I suppose)
3) Resolve damage/effect/lasagna/shoes
These are typically FREE actions... like AoO's.

Yeah, but how do I declare it in context of our gameplay here.
If we were all sitting around a table and Brun got attacked I could say "Oh, hai! Triggering action! I'll use pastamancer! Even though it isn't my turn!"
but here, I'm not sure how to do that. It seems weird to say "If brun gets hit I'll use my immediate reaction!" because then...well...it's not really a reaction.

The former, is exactly it, I'd say (and Sagar has done this before with AoO's he's missed) because it's hard for the GM to keep track of all of those on his own. Plus, surprising the GM has it's advantages...
Ash: "Oh, that guy? I AoO him, don't I?"
GM: "Hrm... I guess so. *rolls* *expletive* OK, he's dead..."
Ash: "I just screwed your next-round plans, eh?"
GM: *grumble*

But the former isn't possible given our play style.

Just tell me you want to use it before you post your next move. I'll go back and adjust the action as best I can.

One example would be the Immediate actions that Solak has in Shield and Staff of Defense. Both are Immediate Interrupts on taking a hit (well, when I remember them, and its not some darn poison gas, anyway....). I think it was back on the ship with the archer, he got a hit on me. I renegged and called in my Immediate Interrupt for more AC, Sagar went back and negated the hit.

Yeah, that's the way it'd go down. You never could know EXACTLY when it'd be triggered, so how would you know when to use it? It'd have to be a "GM edit" thing...

Yes, and DM's have a little trick they use for cases like these...we cheat.
