You see a shaft and a ladder heading straight down for at least 20'.

Order of descent? Turn on the sun rods or not, keeping in mind a sun rod gives off light to a radius of 100'. If not sun rods, any other light source?

Sagar
9th April 2009, 12:21 PM
I'll go down 3rd. Is dim vision adequate?

Greebo
9th April 2009, 12:28 PM
Somewhere in the middle for me, and I have low light vision.

EricStratton
9th April 2009, 12:29 PM
Low-light vision allows you to see another 20' feet down which allows you to see the bottom of the tunnel. You can see that the tunnel shoots off to the north. Once you take that northern tunnel you're pretty sure you won't be able to see but another 10' or so without a light source.

Greebo
9th April 2009, 12:38 PM
Well I'll be happy to hold a sun rod in my free hand.

Moonshadow

I'm happy to stay in the middle :)

Sagar
9th April 2009, 01:01 PM
Everyone into the middle!

OK, I'll go second. Who leads this parade?

Quervo
9th April 2009, 01:14 PM
I will take the lead, I will need to keep my off had free. whoever is last should carry the sunrod

Greebo
9th April 2009, 01:15 PM
I don't intend to be in the rear - I bruise easily!

Rend?
Jagged?

That ok as a party order?

Quervo
9th April 2009, 03:24 PM
sounds good.. BUT we know that path behind us is clear, at least for now....

EricStratton
9th April 2009, 04:32 PM
BTW, here's the current status as I have it. I might have missed an AP used in there somewhere.

Cilene (used both daily powers)
Jagged (used daily power; 6/11 surges remaining)
Sagar
Mazirith (4/9 surges remaining; AP used)
Rend
Greebo (4 dmg, 26 HP; AP used; 6/7 surges remaining)

Sagar
9th April 2009, 04:38 PM
Order looks good. Cilene has light. I have a lantern but let's not use that yet. We can put the rod in a bag if we want to dim the light some.

EricStratton
9th April 2009, 04:44 PM
You reach the bottom of the shaft and, as the low-light vision people saw, the tunnel now extends to the north. About 30' from the bottom of the shaft, the tunnel appears to gently slope down. Moving to the top of the slope you see that the tunnel widens into a larger room with large support beams running up the sides and ceiling. There is a lot of rubble at the bottom of the ramp (difficult terrain).

Rend shifts into animal form and heads down the slope to take a look.

Perfect. Stealth +9, low light vision.

Perfect. Stealth +9, low light vision.
PM sent.

Sagar
9th April 2009, 05:05 PM
Whispers "lets wait for Rend's report"

Shiz
9th April 2009, 05:14 PM
Rend returns shortly (+10 was right Eric).

The room is 40' wide initially, narrowing down to 25' wide. The ceiling is about 10' high. You also recognized one of the kobolds as being a dragonshield like the ones that ambushed you.

You also noticed that some of the rubble (2x4 lighter gray squares) at the bottom of the slope is stained with blood.

And there is a 7 or 8 foot high tower of earth in the middle of the room (2x2 darker gray squares). Almost like an earthen stalagmite. It looks like it was purposely left there. And it looks quite unstable.

You also realized that whatever is down here probably knows you're coming as you could easily see the light from the sun rod before Sagar dimmed it with a cloth.

So guys, they know we are coming. The rubble is might be trapped or more likely there are kobs in the tower of mud with projectiles.

EricStratton
9th April 2009, 06:41 PM
Here is a layout detailing what Rend saw. The 2x4 square of light gray is rubble (difficult terrain). The 2x2 square of dark gray is the earth mound Shiz detailed above. How do you proceed? Keep in mind that the only light down here is what you carry with you.

Sagar
9th April 2009, 06:58 PM
Any way we can collapse the tower? Is it that unstable?

Greebo
9th April 2009, 07:06 PM
If there's no other light, then the Kobolds can see in the dark better than we can. Master told us to hurry, but we don't want to walk blindly into another trap either.

Quervo
9th April 2009, 07:43 PM
let me know what we are doing.... I dont want to rush in

EricStratton
9th April 2009, 07:51 PM
Any way we can collapse the tower? Is it that unstable?
From what Rend saw (Perc: 27), it would be possible. Probably without too much effort.

Sagar
9th April 2009, 08:26 PM
So, Rend, would it be better to attack the tower high and push it over or undermine it and have it collapse?

Shiz
9th April 2009, 08:56 PM
I don't have any ideas on collapsing it. I was thinking someone could climb up (Athletics) and take control.

Sagar
9th April 2009, 09:15 PM
I was thinking of pushing it over on the guys behind it. Something with a push effect, hitting near the top, ought to do it.

Moonshadow
9th April 2009, 10:06 PM
What about a mage hand. It's only 20lbs of pressure, but it's risk free for us and they likely wouldn't notice the hand. Can't hurt to try.

Greebo
9th April 2009, 10:44 PM
And if that doesn't work, we could even try attacking it...

Sagar
9th April 2009, 11:25 PM
The hand can push and, if that isn't enough, add a spell push to it.

Greebo
10th April 2009, 05:37 AM
We *could* try another route - we could try to find out whats going on and bluff them into giving us the idol.

Rend, how powerful did the creatures guarding the idol or pillar or whatever it is seem to be?

Quervo
10th April 2009, 09:52 AM
We need to do something soon as they know we are here, and are probably planning a nasty little trap

Greebo
10th April 2009, 09:53 AM
I say we try to bluff them into thinking we're here for the idol, and when we get close to them, we cleanse the world of their filth by surprise.

Quervo
10th April 2009, 09:57 AM
well if you can sell snow to an ice giant give it shot,

Greebo
10th April 2009, 10:01 AM
My dear Mazrith, not only can I sell snow to an Ice Giant, I can sell him his own snow, and make him think it's a Tequila Sunrise!

But, I would not want to try this unless the group is in agreement. We all have to look the part, if this is to succeed.

Quervo
10th April 2009, 10:24 AM
either way it goes I will be there to help out if something goes wrong. not hard to look like a hired tough

Greebo
10th April 2009, 10:26 AM
For me, very true. For you? A deva? A being known for your dedication to the forces of good?

Not so much maybe...

Quervo
10th April 2009, 10:29 AM
Good evil... you really think a kobold thinks that far in advance?

Greebo
10th April 2009, 10:49 AM
Might do, yeah! They're not all complete idiots!

Sagar
10th April 2009, 11:03 AM
I'm game for the bluff.

EricStratton
10th April 2009, 12:11 PM
The DM...will allow this. ;)

So go for it.

Greebo
10th April 2009, 12:58 PM
If nobody raises an objection within oh... 2 hours...then since I'm the bluffer, I'll move ahead with this plan.

Greebo
10th April 2009, 03:00 PM
Ok. Hearing no objections, Greebo pulls out his own sun rod and starts walking rather brazenly down the pathway, muttering under his breath, "Follow my lead..."

Before he gets into sight of the occupants, he begins ranting and raving in a loud voice.
"I don't CARE why! That jackanape of a donkey's afterbirth has failed me for the last time, and I'm not giving him another chance to screw it up. I'm doing this myself. Now where is that @#$)* dig party with the Idol? This way?!? Ok, lets go!" (Intimidate +8: attempting to put the occupying monsters off guard so they do not attack)

If they do not attack, but instead, stand there looking rather confused as intended, (Bluff +10) as I come into sight, very loudly point at whoever seems to be in charge, "YOU! Where is the Idol? I want it IN MY HANDS, NOW! This was supposed to be delivered HOURS ago! What the blazes is going on down here anyway???"

Sagar
10th April 2009, 04:51 PM
I follow Greebo looking properly menacing (to them) and deferential (to Greebo).

Nicely done! I've convinced :)

Shiz
10th April 2009, 04:54 PM
Rend is a dark wolf walking next to Sagar.

Quervo
10th April 2009, 04:58 PM
Maz will stand behind the rest of the group with his head down... trying to inconspious (sp?)

Shiz
10th April 2009, 05:01 PM
Rend, how powerful did the creatures guarding the idol or pillar or whatever it is seem to be?

I missed this question. The answer is something bigger than a kobold.

EricStratton
10th April 2009, 05:18 PM
The six of you come down the slope. The kobolds shield their eyes as they adjust to the sudden introduction of light. The three kobolds that Rend saw and two more Dragonshields, from behind the earth mound, step up to confront you.

Behind them you see the tunnels continue to the East. (updated map (http://www.primeaxiom.com/rpgt/scene.asp?ID=tdq6wgxkxzdcwkhqk82dtd7opcob2vg2vckmq b78hl1q5cst9d1j6sb2u4frt31g). The gray-ish squares are tunnel but too dark to see down into them.)

One of the Dragonshields and a kobold carrying a staff both lower their weapons at the sound and fury of the Tiefling. The other three kobolds start to step forward when Greebo continues.

"YOU! Where is the Idol? I want it IN MY HANDS, NOW! This was supposed to be delivered HOURS ago! What the blazes is going on down here anyway???"

Sagar chimes in, "Yeah!"

You see all five creatures turn and look back and forth at each other. The magic user kobold says (in draconic that Mazirith translates for everyone) "Agrid said to expect a hobgoblin."

Dragonshield 1: "That's not a hobgoblin?"
Magic User: "*sigh*"
Dragonshield 2: "Look, just let them by. She knows who's supposed to come. Let her deal with it. As long as they take that torch with them I don't care who they are."

Magic User (in common): "Go on, then."

The kobolds stand aside to let you pass.

You head into the eastern tunnel. Even by the light of the sun rod you don't see the end of the tunnel.

Marching orders? What do you do with the light? Do you continue down the tunnel or take advantage of Greebo's ruse (if so you *don't* head into the tunnel and we'll go from there)?

EricStratton
10th April 2009, 05:28 PM
I missed this question. The answer is something bigger than a kobold.
I don't remember what I PM'ed Shiz but it should've said: A little bigger than the kobolds that ambushed you on the King's Road.

Greebo
10th April 2009, 09:07 PM
As we walk through, I point at the magic user! (Intimidate + 8) "You! Come with me, I want an update while we walk." Oh, was he the only magic user as far as I could tell?

Assuming he comes with me, once we're in the hallway and moving, "What's the latest on that pillar? I want a first hand report this time, so pretend like I don't know *anything* about it. I want the raw, unfiltered observations for a change!" (That's another bluff +10 - like I've been getting info already and just want a fresh eye)

Now - assuming he starts talking, as soon as we're what I think is a reasonably safe distance (dungeoneering? only +1 :() from the large room and with no other rooms in sight if possible, whatever he says, no matter how innocuous, I will stop walking abruptly as if in disbelief and will probably press him for more answers while standing still.

EricStratton
10th April 2009, 10:02 PM
Oh, was he the only magic user as far as I could tell?

Yes, he's the one w/ a spear and wearing a bone mask. Another kobold has a spear (but no mask). The other three that you already know to be dragonshields have short swords. Map (http://www.primeaxiom.com/rpgt/scene.asp?ID=tdq6wgxkxzdcwkhqk82dtd7opcob2vg2vckmq b78hl1q5cst9d1j6sb2u4frt31g) updated w/ more descriptive mob names.

---

Greebo sternly commands, "You! Come with me, I want an update while we walk."

The kobold looks at his friends and then back at Greebo. "See here, demon spawn," he practically spits as he raises his spear menacingly. "You just keep walking or one of your friends here will have to deliver the idol for you."

Greebo
10th April 2009, 10:25 PM
I take it that was a failure?

Hmm. Intimidate failed...ok...
(Bluff +10) "I'm going to overlook your insolence, this time, and explain why you're going to come with me. I need accurate reports, ones that haven't been filtered through mindless lackeys and messengers who can't find their message pouches when they're shoved up their own tails! I figured if anyone here could give me an intelligent report, it would be you, mage. I'd hate to have to report that I was mistaken. You know what happens when management gets disappointing reports, after all! Now, come with me so you can fill me in. I don't have time to waste."

EricStratton
10th April 2009, 10:57 PM
You did fail the Intimidate check, yes.

Before we continue, I need to know where everyone is standing at this point.

Map: http://www.primeaxiom.com/rpgt/scene.asp?ID=tdq6wgxkxzdcwkhqk82dtd7opcob2vg2vckmq b78hl1q5cst9d1j6sb2u4frt31g

Sagar
11th April 2009, 01:47 AM
I am standing with Greebo, but I thought we were through the kobolds already.

Greebo
11th April 2009, 06:01 AM
That was the idea but the mage did not come with me as I instructed.

Greebo
11th April 2009, 06:05 AM
As we walk through, I point at the magic user! (Intimidate + 8) "You! Come with me, I want an update while we walk." Oh, was he the only magic user as far as I could tell?

The kobold looks at his friends and then back at Greebo. "See here, demon spawn," he practically spits as he raises his spear menacingly. "You just keep walking or one of your friends here will have to deliver the idol for you."

I'm thinking the kobold replied as we were nearing the exit on the NE, so I figure I'd be up around G4 at this point, and when he replied, I would stop, turn, and start walking towards him for intimidating effect.

EricStratton
11th April 2009, 10:26 AM
Bluff failed. The kobold cocks his head to one side and narrows his eyes. "Who did you say sent you?"

Updated map. Sagar said he's next to Greebo - where exactly do you want to be? I put you in the marching order that I was given at the beginning of this thread. Make changes now. Things are getting tense.

http://www.primeaxiom.com/rpgt/scene.asp?ID=tdq6wgxkxzdcwkhqk82dtd7opcob2vg2vckmq b78hl1q5cst9d1j6sb2u4frt31g

Sagar
11th April 2009, 11:15 AM
And I will walk with him, rubbing my thumb along the edge of my axe...

"The last guy who talked to HIM" gesture towards Greebo "like that became a sacrifice to Orcus. Are YOU volunteering "
I'll cut my thumb just a bit and let the blood smear on the blade.
"Are ANY of you volunteering?"

Can I use Religion (+7) and Insight (+8) to make the Intimidate (+2) more effective?

As I finish speaking, I want to be standing next to the magic user.

We should all be fairly tightly grouped. Me at F4, Jagged at G4, Maz at G3, Cilene at H3.

Moonshadow
11th April 2009, 11:36 AM
I approve of Sagar's positioning. I think we should all be moving to back Greebs up.

I'm looking astonished at the audacity of this peon mage.

Shiz
11th April 2009, 11:52 AM
I am enjoying this and have no tactical adjustments to suggest.

Also, Greebs, you should use the roll function when you want to bluff and intimidate.

Greebo
11th April 2009, 11:54 AM
Oops, you're right...sorry, ES

Greebo
11th April 2009, 12:01 PM
Ok, one last try.

(Intimidate +8) *Cock an eyebrow at the kobold* "Were I not so pressed for time, I'd deal with you. But I like to take a long time dealing with insubordination. Hastiness spoils the experience, don't you think?"

*Turn, walk towards the caves*

"So be a good boy and come along with me now, or I promise to make a lot of time available for you in the very near future."

Either way, we're leaving. Ideally, he follows with us alone...
Intimidate: 20 total

Shiz
11th April 2009, 12:12 PM
Rend and Jagged will bring up the rear, walking abreast.

EricStratton
11th April 2009, 06:43 PM
"So be a good boy and come along with me now, or I promise to make a lot of time available for you in the very near future."

The kobold takes in Sagar's bloody axe and Cilene's astonishment. He looks up at Greebo and his attitude swings back to "I'm not so sure I want to mess with this guy and his friends. But there's something still not right about him." (Intimidate succeeded)

He kobold lowers his spears and his friends visibly relax a bit. "All right. All right. I'll let you all continue on. But if you want me to come with you, I want an answer - who sent you?"

I took Sagar's post as an assist on Greebo that failed but Greebo's intimidate succeeded anyway.

So three bluff/intimidates succeeded. Two bluff/intimidates failed. You can go on and leave them all here or you can make one more bluff or intimidate attempt. If it works, he goes with you alone. If it doesn't....

Greebo
11th April 2009, 07:03 PM
In for a penny, in for a pound...

Pause at the tunnel exit. Do not turn around to face him. "You know who sent me. The question you should be asking yourself is, who do you want finding out you were anything less than helpful to me?"
(Bluff: 29)

Continue walking. He follows or not, but either way, we're in the tunnel.

EricStratton
11th April 2009, 10:07 PM
"You know who sent me. The question you should be asking yourself is, who do you want finding out you were anything less than helpful to me?"

The words sink in quickly (Intimidate succeeded and how). The kobold moans and says a short prayer in Draconic that Mazirith doesn't quite catch. He runs to catch up to Greebo whining, "But I don't know anything...." The rest of the kobolds watch and, while also saying a prayer for their friend, secretly thank their god they kept their mouths shut.

That was fun (for me, at least). It wasn't supposed to be a skill challenge but I decided to turn it into one. I know I didn't mention that it was a skill challenge but the way the RP'ing was going it didn't seem like I had to except at the end there - I wanted to make sure the choices were obvious for the "end game". I'll take comments/suggestions in the discussion thread.

Greebo
12th April 2009, 06:50 AM
Ok, we'll keep walking into the tunnel, saying to the mage while still in ear shot to his friends, "Smart decision. I was beginning to think you didn't have it in you. Now, like I said, I want a fresh perspective. Pretend like I don't know anything, and give me a report on everything that's been going on, from your point of view. And be quick about it!"

If the tunnel is as long as it looks, then I want to look for a point around a bend out of sight from the other kobolds. Once we're out of sight, we'll stop moving after some relatively innocuous part of the Kobold's report, acting like I hadn't heard that before, covering the real reason for stopping.

Basically, I want to know whatever the kobold knows that's pertinent to the raids, the cultists, the idol and even the unstable pillar - the idea being we don't go into this completely blind with nothing more than "Ocrus cultists" whispers.

Sagar
12th April 2009, 09:22 AM
I will walk ahead of Greebo to keep the Kobold from bolting forward. I'll have my axe out and ready in case I get to sacrifice him after all.

Moonshadow
12th April 2009, 12:20 PM
If Greebs scares the bejesus out of him again I'll calm him down (every bad cop needs a good cop)

"Listen just tell the truth no matter how bad you think it looks. He *gesturing at Greebo* might be angry but that's only because he's the one who's going to have to deliver the report. Give him the info and let him figure out how to spin it. Remember you'll be safely here while the report is being given"

And if he's surprised about being here still...

"Oh haven't they told you yet? They think there's a second artifact. They're extending the dig."

EricStratton
13th April 2009, 10:59 AM
The kobold looks as if he is carrying the weight of the world. "I told you, I don't know anything. Irontooth has the raiding parties keeping the villagers indoors. He doesn't want anyone going near the keep."

Cult: "Cultists? What cultists?"

Idol: "Some humans found an idol so Agrid sent a runner to the keep and put the little dragonling down here to guard it until the runner returned. It's some statue of Orcan or Ormus or some such. Only reason we're helping is because Irontooth told us to. Taking orders from a hobgobling...." he shakes his head in what seems to be shame.

Dirt pillar: "The pile of dirt? It's just a trap to push down on people if they try to come down here. You're lucky it wasn't pushed on you," he sneers mustering up what remains of his courage.

You've gone through a bend or two and stop at this point. You are far enough away from the kobolds that you're sure they can no longer hear or see you. You're also sure no one in the direction you're heading can see you but you're not sure if you're close enough for anyone to hear you and, if you're still using the sun rod uncovered, you don't know if they can see the light.

You ask the kobold how much further to get to the idol and he replies, "We've still got a ways to go." Rend (passive insight) gives the wolf equivalent of a "thumbs up".

Greebo
13th April 2009, 11:05 AM
"And what is your take on Irontooth? It sounds to me like you think someone else should be in charge?"

EricStratton
13th April 2009, 11:30 AM
"And what is your take on Irontooth? It sounds to me like you think someone else should be in charge?"
He spits on the ground. "He's an oaf. I said hobgoblin earlier but he's just a big goblin. Some of us like to call him a hobgoblin because he hates it," he says chuckling. "And someone else was charge," he continues starting to get riled up. "Our clan, the Clan of the Withered Arm, served Issitik until Irontooth came and defeated him. Bastard had help, though. Damn traitors!" he gnashes his teeth until you think you hear them crack.

Greebo
13th April 2009, 11:47 AM
"I suspected there might be some lingering feelings about that. Tell me - what about the raids that have been taking place? Do you think those wise?"

EricStratton
13th April 2009, 11:59 AM
"Wise? We do what the clan leader says. It's wise to do as we're told."

Greebo
13th April 2009, 12:00 PM
"But you have said you have little regard for this new leader. Perhaps you believe it's time for another to take his place?"

Shiz
13th April 2009, 12:03 PM
While this is going on, Rend is going to stealthily backtrack and make sure we were not followed. He will go back far enough to see the main room again and make a count.

I don't know how many Stealth (+10) checks will be needed so I will make a few.

EricStratton
13th April 2009, 12:03 PM
"We want Issitik back. We heard he was taken to the keep to be dealt with there."

Greebo
13th April 2009, 12:06 PM
"And what was Issitik's view on raiding the other races?"

EricStratton
13th April 2009, 12:09 PM
"Before Irontooth *spit* took over we survived by hunting wild game. We generally avoided contact with the civilized races. They aren't as...understanding of our presence. But I do not speak for our leader. You need to talk to him, if we can ever get rid of Irontooth."

Greebo
13th April 2009, 12:11 PM
"What would happen if Irontooth were removed but it was too late for Issitik?"

EricStratton
13th April 2009, 12:18 PM
The kobold thinks for a time. The longest he's taken to think in the conversation thus far. "This is an...unusual situation. I have not experienced this. The clan elders would lead until the next leader is born, I think. The elders respect the right of rule and would probably lead according to Issitik's wishes." Sensing confusing he explains, "Once a generation a kobold in our clan is born with a withered arm marking them as the future leader of our clan."

Greebo
13th April 2009, 12:20 PM
"And the rest of your clan - they share your feelings?"

EricStratton
13th April 2009, 12:24 PM
"Not all of them, no," he growls. "Some pups of questionable heritage joined Irontooth and helped overthrow Issitik. But most of us followed Issitik loyally."

Greebo
13th April 2009, 12:25 PM
"And what is your name?"

EricStratton
13th April 2009, 12:44 PM
"I am the wyrmpriest Moskig." He looks around suddenly realizing you've stopped walking. He starts up again. "Come on, let's get you your idol."

Greebo
13th April 2009, 12:55 PM
Signal the group to surround Moskig, and aim my rod (*groan*) directly at his eyes.

"Moskig, I have a proposition for you. You want your old leader back. I want the Kobold raids to stop. Tell me who is loyal to Issitik, and how to gain their trust, and we will dispose of Irontooth for you and restore Issitik to his rightful place, if at all possible.

Or, stand with Irontooth, and perish here, on the spot, along with all those of your clan who would have had a chance to live, otherwise."

Dunno if you want to treat this as surprise combat or just discussion...hopefully the latter.

EricStratton
13th April 2009, 02:00 PM
Moskig looks around and is very confused by the sudden reappearance of hostilities. But at this point he's also tired and mentally beaten and just assumes this is a continuation of his ongoing interrogation. "I don't know all those that have sided with Irontooth. I wasn't in our nest when he came. I heard that those that helped him serve by his side now. If you were to rescue Issitik from the keep, I think you'd find out quickly who is loyal and who isn't. I for one would die for Issitik."

Greebo
13th April 2009, 02:08 PM
I visibly consider his answer for a moment, as if I'm considering whether or not I am willing to trust this kobold in my bid to replace Irontooth. (Actually, I am debating whether or not he's going to give away our infiltration...)

"Very well, Moskig," putting away my weapon, "I think you can see that things are changing around here. Orcus has been ill served by that rusty mouthed cretin drawing attention to our activities like he has been, and I intend to set things right. You stay quiet about this chat, and if Issitik is still alive, then when 'Irontooth' is gone, I'll restore him to power and be sure he knows he has you to thank."

"For now, go back to your post and keep quiet. Issitik's survival may depend upon you and your kin at some point being ready for anything. If that time comes, remember where your true loyalty lies."

Moskig looks around again still a bit confused as to the direction the conversation took. He nods, turns around, and heads back to his post.

Greebo
13th April 2009, 02:28 PM
Let him be confused. If the kobolds are being driven to raid by an outsider, then this can be a way to restore peace without unnecessary killing. And if we find we must run back this way in a hurry, then I can tell him that Issitik needs his help - that if Issitik is to survive, he must fight on our side.

Lets proceed onward to wherever the tunnel goes.

Rend scouts out ahead. He comes back a few minutes later and tells you that in a couple hundred yards the tunnel opens up to the right. He didn't try to look into the room due to the complete lack of light but he did hear voices that sounded like more kobolds. He also heard some sort of growling. "It has to be the dragonling Moskig mentioned."

Rend does his best to guess where the sound came from and targets L6 with a Chill Wind, Area Burst 1 within 10, +4 vs FOR, d6, hit: you slide the target one square. He will have the wind blow "north" to push anything hit closer to the illuminated area.

He will then step back to F3 stealthily (if that is still an option).

I don't know how many, if any, attack rolls to make so I am just making one. There may be nothing in the burst.

EricStratton

Round 1:

Rend calls up a Chill Wind into the darkness of the cave. You hear three distinct groans as the wind washes northward (10+4 - 1 dmg; natural 20 - 6 dmg; 8+4 - 1 dmg) and the sound of two bodies hitting the dirt floor. As the wind rushes at you two dead kobolds roll into view (at K4 and M4). You haven't seen kobolds like this before; these two each hold two short swords one in each frozen hand.

Suddenly a bright white wyrmling, not much bigger than yourselves, flies out of the darkness and lands in front of Rend (I3 - the campfire until I get a chance to find something better). It bellows in Draconic (which Maz translates) sweeping Rend's hair back, "Let's show these pathetic humanoids what we think of thieves!" Following the sound with not much fury, it swipes at Rend with each hand but he deftly avoids both attacks (8 and 6 vs AC).

Throwing caution to the frozen wind, Jagged moves to Rend's side (H2) and launches a biting attack (Recuperating Strike). The mighty swing hits (7+7 vs AC) slamming into the dragon (7 dmg) while filling the barbarian with life (+3 THP).

Sagar produces a brilliant Lance of Faith which hits (17+3 vs AC) just nicking the wyrm (4 dmg; 11 total) and granting Cilene divine favor.

Cilene, determined to not be fate's bitch any longer, blasts the dragon (5+8+2 vs REF) with a Magic Missile (8 dmg; 19 total).

Having made fun of Cilene one too many times, it appears that fate has a new bitch as Greebo nearly puts his own eye out attempting to cast Witchfire (3+2 vs REF) after putting a curse on the little dragon. "Aww, isn't she a cwuute widdle thing!!! Coochie coochie coo...****, my face!"

Can someone remind me who is carrying a sun rod?

Round 1 con't:

A dual short sword wielding kobold comes running around the dragon and attacks Jagged but in his unprepared state he misses, then takes a quick step backward (shift to J2).

Then another kobold runs up replacing the first one and attacks Jagged as well. That attack is much better catching Jagged in the leg (31+3-5=29) and nicking Rend with the other sword (26-2=24). This kobold also takes a step back hiding behind the dragon (shift to J3).

From out of the darkness another kobold comes running at you, this time attacking Rend around the corner but he just misses the druid catching the edge of the wall instead. He takes a step back around the corner disappearing back into the darkness.

You think you can take a second to catch your breath when, like a plague, another kobold runs up to replace the last one. This one looks a little bit frost bitten and, while it also carries two short swords, it looks a might bit bigger than the last three kobolds you've seen. He attacks Rend scoring a direct hit (natural 20) catching Rend in the side (24-6=18). Like the others, he takes retreats just enough to allow another friend in (shift to J4).

And in that friend comes. This kobold, looking about as big as the last one and also dual wielding, continues the assault on Rend slicing his shoulder (18-3=15). He too backs out of reach shifting into the darkness.

The bigger kobold (#1) at the center of the blast shrugs off the lights but is seared by its heat (5 dmg, 7 total). Dragon, Bigger Kobold 2 and Kobold 5 are all slowed and grant CA (save ends). Bigger Kobold 1 grants CA until the end of Rend's round 3 turn.

She then brings her cold, steel jaws down on him (10-8=2, bloodied). She licks the blood off her lips and shifts back into the cave a step (to I4). "Oh ho ho, I'm not finished with you peons." (Spends an Action Point) She takes a deep breath, holds it for a split second, and then blows a wintery blast at Rend, Jagged, and Mazirith but only the deva is caught flat footed. Round 2 con't:

Cilene moves down the tunnel (to H3) and starts casting Scorching Burst. The dragon sees an opening, though, and attacks but Cilene ducks under the dragon's claw and quickly finishes the spell. A fireball flies from her hand, lands at the feet of the big kobold, and explodes. Big Kobold 2 (11 dmg) and Kobold 5 (6 dmg, dead) aren't fast enough to avoid the flames yelping in pain.

Greebo moves down the tunnel behind Cilene (to G3) and fires an Eldritch Blast at BK1 but the shot misses.

Kobold 6 weaves his way through his friends and up to Sagar (J3). He scores a direct hit catching Sagar in the side (27-5=22) and nicking Mazirith (25-2=23). Then he takes a step back away from the dwarf (shift to K3)

Kobold 7 has always wanted to be like Kobold 6 so he does the exact same thing. Except he's not like Kobold 6 and his attack misses. And he shifts to K2.

Kobold 8 moves up the tunnel to M5.

Bigger Kobold 1 nails Sagar with one of his swords but Maz quickly steps in and shields Sagar from the damage (Aegis of Shielding). He takes a step back to get some breathing room (to K5).

Bigger Kobold 2 walks up to Sagar, misses with his sword, and then moves right back to where he was. Bigger Kobold 1 says, "Wow, nice job." BK2 shakes his head vigorously and is able to clear his mind (saved). Just then the Faerie Fire flares in his mind and he screams in pain (6+18=24 dmg grants CA until end of Rend's Round 3 turn).

Mazirith flips his sword around in his hand and flings it at Big Kobold 1. The sword finds its target hitting the kobold in the chest (25+16/2=33 dmg) not hitting as hard as it would've due to Maz's weakened state. The sword wiggles there for a moment before flying back to its owner's hand. Maz moves up some and then attempts to power himself through the cold affecting him but can't (save failed).

Rend, clearly a bit conflicted, summons a Chill Wind at J4 Area Burst 1 within 10, +4 vs FOR, d6, hit: you slide the target one square. "My apologies for the nippy air, Sagar, but it is for the best."

I think I only hit the Wyrmling (to J4), BK2 (to K4) and Sagar (to I4). If I hit the others, slide them east.

Rend will then load his sling and spend an action point to shoot at Kobold 8.

Hrm, didn't work out as hoped. I will use Chill Wind to try and get allies out of trouble. I was trying to herd the bad guys together more.

Round 3:

Rend, clearly a bit conflicted, summons a Chill Wind. The gust blasts the wyrmling, Bigger Kobold 2 and Sagar each of them getting just a little cold (30+2=32 dmg, 29+2=31 dmg, 22-2=20 HP) as they slide along the floor. Rend then loads his sling and nails Kobold 8 in the brain (6 dmg, dead). It was dead before it hit the ground.

The dragon swipes her claws at Sagar missing with the first but catching him with the second (20-7=13 HP, bloodied) bloodying the cleric. She then spreads her wings to take off. Sagar uses this opportunity to take a quick jab at her doing minimal damage (32+6=38 dmg, bloodied) but drawing blood. She lifts off the ground and flies around the corner (to H6) still failing to shake the colors out of her mind.

Jagged whistles a happy tune as he moves to the center of the fray (M3 -> L4) and launches a tremendous cleaving attack. The greataxe swings through the air cutting clean through Kobold 6 and Kobold 8 (17 dmg to each, both dead). The axe misses Bigger Kobold 1 but Jagged keeps the momentum going and he wedges the axe deep into the side of Bigger Kobold 2. The kobold has enough time to look down at the axe before it falls down dead as well (17 dmg, dead). Surveying the carnage, Jagged lets out a great Roar of Triumph putting the fear of barbarians into Kobold 7, Bigger Kobold 1, and the dragon (all have -2 to all DEF until end of Jagged's Round 4 turn).

Sagar moves to I5 and plants a Righteous Brand on the wyrmling (38+15=53 dmg, still bloodied; +3 to hit vs Wyrm to Maz). Then he gets his Second Wind (20+6=26 HP, +2 to all defenses until SOR4T).

Jagged shifts forward (to K5) and attacks Kobold 7 in the flank, with a Howling Strike. The kobold shifts his hips just a bit and Jagged misses his flank by mere inches. You did have CA due to the flank but it still wasn't enough

Sagar shifts south and casts Healing Word on Jagged (8+7+3+2=20 HP, 3 surges remaining). He then casts Cascade of Light at the dragon. The dragon starts to cook under the intense heat of the light pouring from Sagar. It thrashes left and right until finally it succumbs to the divine energy and slumps over, dead; a cold mist still drifting out of its mouth (73+11=84, dead).

Cilene moves to a better position (put you at M5 b/c N5 is inside a wall) and just misses hitting the kobold with a Magic Missile.

Greebo curses the last remaining kobold. Their eyes lock. The kobold's get wide as Greebo smiles and bring his hand down firing the Eldritch Blast. The shot nails the kobold sending him flying. He *kind of* did. He look at you, then looked at the dragon, and then kept fighting.

The room looks as you'd expect a mined out cave to look. You check out the table (the wood thing at F8) and see the idol. On the kobolds you find the usual collection of junky equipment. Except for a set of bracers that one of the bigger kobolds was wearing. They are shinier than the rest of the equipment and seem oddly void of scratches.

Bracers of Mighty Striking
Item Slot: Arms
Property: When you hit with a melee basic attack, you gain a +2 item bonus to the damage roll.

As for the totem you pick it up and turn it over and around in your hands. You can understand how it could've been mistaken for trash as it's fashioned from leaves and shards of bone. But the leaves don't crumble in your hands nor do the bone shards cut you as you'd expect them to. It comes to you that the miners uncovered an

Autumn Harvest Totem +1
Implement (Totem)
Enhancement: Attack rolls and damage rolls

EricStratton

Nature (22) - You examine the wyrmling closely. Unfortunately, it was a very young wyrm and most of its scales had not matured to the point where they'd be useable as any sort of armor. Most of those that were useable before the fight are in no such condition any longer. You do find one hardened scale that's still in good condition. You pull it off and store it. It might be worth something in town if you wish to sell it.

The bracers and totem are quite safe to touch. In fact, you find that by not touching them they stop granting any sort of benefit.

Listen, we promised that kobold that we'd see about helping his old clan leader. The old clan leader supposedly isn't one to go for raids. Why should we go kill the kobolds if there's a possible peaceful solution?

I'm fine with resting up, but why don't we see about the keep first and if this Issitik is really interested in peaceful coexistence before we go after the kobolds lair simply cause they were forced to attack innocents by their new leader?

As usual, Rend considers this all nitpicking. He will follow Sagar's lead.

And if we spend 3 or 4 days at this keep there may not be much to come back to, since they have jumped us twice in as many days....

I am all for taking out this Irontooth... maybe we can your kobold "friend" to help us with a little insurection.

I don't understand. The kobolds are not in any danger right now. Except from us. If we go to the Keep and free this Is-A-Tukus, then the kobold lair won't have to be purged if the kob priest keeps his word.

Should we take an extended break to reset surges and dailies?

I guess I don't see the difference between resting here and going to the lair, and returning to town for the night, and heading to the lair.

We're within a couple hours of town, and we'd have the opportunity to discuss what our master found out and update Lord P, and (not that this is a key factor) sleep in a real bed and eat hot food :D

Should we grab kobold parts and tell Lord V that we cleaned out the lair for our reward? As long as the attacks stop, he won't know either way.

Assuming the attacks stop.

Is the kobold leader in the lair or in the keep?

The old leader was taken to the keep... The new "Leader" is a goblin sent by the fellows at the keep to creat havok for the villiage. If we dont the new guy then they will just keep raising hell why we go look for the old guy and other trouble... Not including the fact if the guys here turn on us, then the lair could come in behind us as they are called into the keep for ambush as we are headed there.

If you really want to ignore the lair so be it. But i feel that it would be better to clear it. I dont like having an unknown force behind that could show up at the least opportune time.

That would be dishonest, but that doesn't bother me one bit.

Mosstik told us that the kobolds loyal to this goblin fight at his side. Conclusion - any kobolds that take arms against us at the keep are kobolds we should kill. Any kobolds who are imprisoned are potential allies.

If I were the kobolds at their lair, I'd stay the hell out of it either way until they know who wins.

"You are assuming Irontooth is in the keep and not at the lair, though. Regardless, our commission to clear the lair is not dependent on preventing all further attacks by those kobolds. How long is the keep going to take? A day or two? Yet, if we go to the lair now and Mosstik is there, he might help against any cultists directing raids.

"I have no preference, but all the angles should be considered.

Maybe I misunderstood Mossy - I thought he said Irontooth was at the Keep, but I might be mistaken.

Sagar, you organized this outing - I'll defer to your judgment.

The old kobold leader was taken to the keep, Irontooth was left in charge at the lair.

Well then - if we go to the keep and rescue the old leader, then when we go to the lair with him in tow, we may find allies against Irontooth are there willing to join us!

Let's head back to town, talk to our Mentor, update the councilman, identify the idol, and let the councilman decide where he most needs us to go next.

Between the mentor, councilman, and sage, they may have valuable insights that would help.

Back to town to report.
