I like Greebo's idea of magic requests.
Each of you, please send me a list of 3 magic items you'd like to find in the next several adventures.
The items should be levels 5-8 (and not all 8).
There is no guarantee you will find them all, but some should become available.
You can also ask Scorpio to look for stuff for you. He has connections.

I have requests from Trask, Baladir (sort of), Amaril and Brunhilde. Solak, Fandango, do you want to make requests?

Roll Your Own Guidelines:
Characters roll:
Initiative
Attacks,
Damage
Saving Throws
Stealth
Opposed rolls
History, Arcana, Religion and other knowledge checks
Anything else specifically requested by the DM.
DM will roll:
Perception
Insight
Check for traps
Disarming traps
Basically, the characters roll when they have a realistic chance to know how they did.
The DM rolls when the characters don't know if there is really anything there to find.
(Except for Disarming traps - in which case the character continues until they THINK they are done. DM determines if they are correct.)
This seems like a reasonable breakdown to me.
