View Full Version : Nostalgia Trip: Tomb of Horrors, anyone?

A poster on the WOTC forums has created a 4e version of the famous 1978 module S1:The Tomb of Horrors - Gary Gygax's own original killer dungeon, complete with a selection of pre-rolled 11th level characters.

If anyone is interested in a "one shot" run (separate forum) in an attempt to see how long the party can survive, I'd be willing to run it.

Muhahahah!
MUHAHAHAAH!

MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Er, ahem, I mean - rsvp if interested. :)

Party Slot) Player / Character
1) Moonshadow / Cleric - Sather
2) Shiz / Wizard - Gerik Desatysso
3) Lycos / Fighter - Grunther
4) Kiir / Rogue - Lyla
5) Sagar / Ranger - Aaron

Can we each play 2 chars? IIRC we'll need them :D

PS, yes please. God knows I need the nightmares.

Seeing as I remember nothing but the demi-lich, yes, I would be willing to die for your amusement, Greebo.

I would expect a VERY generous budget for magic items to build our characters.

I kind of remember a Paladin being important for some reason so I would volunteer for that role. We need Perception/Arcana/Dungeoneering studmuffins to even have a chance.

There are 7 pre-generated characters to chose from, but the adventure is designed for 5.

The choices are: cleric, rogue, fighter, bard, wizard, ranger, and ranger

Weird to put in two flavors of ranger but...whatever. ;)

Yes. That is easier. I haven't played a wizard yet, so that would be my choice. Let's go with 5.

Cleric please!

*sigh* If only I didn't work opposite hours to everyone else...

I've already read enough of it to ruin it, I think. But, god, I can't wait to watch this.

I'd be far too inept to play an 11th level character, but I too look forward to the reading of it.

If I could get away with having character info in the open at work... but I've gotta sneak around enough with what I've got already.

I'll be joining the audience, though.

I would be interested. I have read it before, but not in the last 15 years.
I remember (vaguely) how to get in and, uhm.. crap. That's about it.

Greebo

Vague recollections of the old tomb can be considered "rumors and whispers". If you haven't read it recently and feel you can avoid metagaming, pick a character. :)

I have it printed out in and in a folder (in a stack with a bunch of other folders). When I need the info, I just open the folder and look. It looks like work that way.

We absolutely need the rogue, of course, and someone who will roll well with him!

The pdf comes up sideways and I cannot re-save it roatated.

I want in. Sounds like fun. I'll take the Bard or the Ranger, respectively.

Shiz
12th May 2009, 02:39 PM
Shiz - Wizard
Moonie - Cleric
Lycos - Bard

Moonie and I are willing to play 2 if we don't get more.

That makes you the bard since its open and first in line.

I rather took her remark to mean that you need 10 characters to make it through alive with 5 players... ;)

Why 2 rangers? I would think another defender would be a better choice for a tough dungeon.

There are 7 chars to choose from, there are 5 slots. I don't know why the designer made 2 different rangers.

Oh that was ages ago! :) I remember that. Dunno if I have that anymore, or if I gave it (amongst others) away. :o

Have fun stormin' the Tombs!

We need the fighter in case there is actually combat and the rogue for traps.

Agreed. I think those have to be the last 2 classes.

Sagar

Its such a lousy rogue, though.

The rangers have the perception and dungeoneering.

That'd be fine, except I hardly ever have 'paperwork', and certainly don't have folders of it. One small pile of recent handouts or info on one side, small notepad on the other. And I'll go 3-4 days without touching either of them.

Kiir
12th May 2009, 04:15 PM
I'll take the Rogue spot, could be fun and I never end up playing a rogue normally.

I'll take the ranger sharpshooter

Greebo
12th May 2009, 04:33 PM
I'll take the ranger sharpshooter

That will leave the party without a defender. Which is *fine* by me, but the rest of the party may have objections...

Shiz
12th May 2009, 04:36 PM
Nope. Let's roll. Rogue is tanking. LOL! This adventure is all about the cluster**** anyway.

Lycos
12th May 2009, 05:03 PM
No. Switch me to the fighter.

Shiz
12th May 2009, 05:14 PM
Agreed. The sharpshooter has very good rogue skills. That rogue build is awful.

Sagar
12th May 2009, 05:37 PM
It's a city rogue with people skills, not dungeon skills.

If the sharpshoot could take training in thievery, it would be perfect.

Greebo
12th May 2009, 07:14 PM
Ok - I'll start setting this up, and tomorrow, we begin...

MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Just looked at the chr sheet. Wow, quite different. I'm still looking at things from a 2e sheet perspective! Good thing I didn't volunteer... I would be lost...

And that poor Soldier/fighter (Grunther?) ... his image makes him look like he's dead or dying... :D Blood outta the nose/mouth.

/me watches from the sidelines. Live long and prosper!

That was precisely what I meant. My alcohol hazed memory (post gaming drinking to forget) has us playing this at a weekend cottage getaway and something to do with tossing all of our short chars (dwarves, halflings) to their death. We THOUGHT it was a good idea.

General complaints about stupid pre-gens, and also questioning two rangers.

There were two adventuring modules related to the Tomb of Horrors. The first one was, of course, the Tomb of Horrors. The second was the Return To of it, which had the party follow the footsteps of a previous party who had managed to get mostway in before scattering.

Those characters?

Gerik Desatysso--human magic-user
Grunther--human fighter
Lyla--?? ?? (but was caught rummaging in someone's pack, so thief)
Tiefon the dwarf--dwarf ?? (but double-axe dwarf ranger is an idea that tickles my belly, so there's that)
Aaron--?? ?? (but was sent to explore ahead with Lyla, so a second explore-ee class)
Falon t'Selvin--?? ?? (but his tombstone talked about his fair voice, and his name sounds elven, so half-elf bard)
Sather--human cleric (good deity)

I just wanted it so that anyone who played the Return would feel like they were playing the original. And anyone who goes on to play the Return after this will feel like the characters named therein are old friends.

Also, I've joined the audience. I expect hilarity to ensue, and you're already helping me edit the Tomb through your playtesting =P

Oh I was simply told where to go. But badmouth it away, if you prefer badmouthing: I've already done more-than-minor cartographic, DC, skill challenge, and description changes based on people's... "unadulterated truths" =P

(my other hobby besides D&D is drawing artwork for people and for online. I'm used to brutal criticism. And I'm also a human being. So I'm used to brutal insults. Nothin' phases me, man, nothin'. Plus, I'll be laughing in the end anyway as the module progresses ;))

He figured he'd have let you go shopping before the arrival at the tomb.

Hee hee.

Nah, see, it's not nice. If they get to shop, they get attached to their characters... who then die... mwaha.

Nah, no hateration here. Just my previous comments about altering the character's skill set.
