View Full Version : Under Bracken: Through the Secret Door

Our party of intrepid adventurers, exploring deep beneath the bowels of Bracken, have come upon a secret door at the end of a corridor. Behind they door, they hear sounds of movement.
What will they do next?

Per the Discussion thread, Fandango will open the door and step to the side while Baladir will stand forward. Brun behind Bal. Trask, Solak and Amaril scattered behind.

It's in the wall. It a bit smallish and raised a bit off the ground - about 3/4's normal size. And it opens inward towards you.

That's perfect. We act as described.

Baladir moves with unnatural silence for a guy in a tin suit and carrying a gong.
Fandango most with natural silence for a guy who does this sort of stuff for a living.
With the utmost quiet, Fandango EASES the door open a crack and peers inside. He sees rats. And a 20'x20 room carved from the rock, but mostly, he sees rats. There is one Dire Rat apparent and a ginormous swarm of smaller rats in the room. Neither the dire rat nor the swarm notice the cracked door. The room is only dimly lit.
Do we have to do a knowledge check again since we fought these in the temple all those months ago?
Nature +8, using my rolls from the searching that wasn't done if that's ok. Won't use those for combat.
12+8=20 on the dire
10+8=18 on the swarms
We already know swarms are vulnerable to AEs but we don't have a lot of that/

I wouldn't step in. Give them room to come out a bit but have them stacked. The hall is only two squares wide.
Leave the square in from of the door free, Baladir to the south of it. Brun adjacent to Baladir. Fandango behind Brun and Trask behind Bal. Solak behind Fan, Amaril behind Trask.
That leave two squares in front of them and then the room beyonod. When we are in position, Solak throws a Scorching into the room, centered on the square one back from the door.

You know dire rats cause disease with their bites.
Swarms did appear to be vulnerable to AoEs. This swarm, however, is SIGNIFICANTLY bigger than the others you've see - both in rat size and in rat quantity.
Trask leans in to look and begins whispering combat suggestions to the party.
The rats in the room suddenly stop and stare at the door.
Fandango: Please roll a strength check (D20+1/2 level + str modifier).

As Fandango turns to listen to Trask's whisper, the secret door is shoved hard from the other side. The door flies open, shoving Fandango back and revealing a humanoid shaped shadow and a glint of steel.
Surprise round:
The steel flashes forward and slices deeply into the off balanced rogue (natural 20 to hit - Setup strike: 2d6+4 damage, +2d6 sneak attack, +1d6 magical weapon). Fandango is badly wounded (34 damage) and gives CA until EoT1.
The rogue was not in a part of the room visible from the crack. He made perception vs Fandango's thievery and saw the door open. He made stealth vs passive perception to creep to the door. He beat Fandango in str vs str attack to thrust the door open. This all to get surprise on the party. Surprise attack was a critical hit.
Please roll initiative.
The door will give partial cover to all in the room. I'll work on the map as soon as I can.

The rat swarm flows around the figure in the door like inky water. It also flows through the party, biting and gnawing as it moves (to R8). The swarm actively attacks Fandango (20 vs AC 18) and Trask (28 vs AC 19) as it passes by. Both are bitten many times (6 damage) and have rats crawling on them (4 ongoing, SE).
The wererat pauses to let the rogue attack.
The rogue throws a dagger at Fandango (21+2 vs AC 18) and strikes the rogue hard (15 damage - Fandango is at -7 HP and still has rats crawling and gnawing all over him). The shadowly figure in the doorway moves aside as Fandango falls and a large, ratlike shadow jumps through the doorway. It bites Trask (19 vs AC 19) giving him a small (5 damage) but painful (2 ongoing, SE) bite. (since this damage is different from the swarming rats, it will be cumulative.)

Baladir, standing near the swarm, is attacked by swarming rats. These (natural 20) get all in his armor and chew on him unmercifully (10 damage, 4 ongoing SE). Despite the rats underfoot, he manages to slam the door shut - and you all hear curses from the creature on the other side. Slamming the door is a std action. Baladir can't attack this round - the 1 has to wait until next round - sorry. Oh, but he does reach down and grab Fandango's ankle, healing him (surge 12 hp. Fandango is concious, prone and taking damage.)
Fandango wakes to find himself a rat chewtoy. He takes 4 ongoing damage from the rats on him and is also attacked by the swarm (14 vs AC) but the general melee keeps the rats at bay. (first action must be to move to an open square. You'll also need a ST vs rats)
Shall we let Amaril go next so he can provide light?
Also, Trask needs to roll on his attack.

Excellent.

Then I will rise and shift to r6. (move action)
I will use Sneak in the Attack on the wererat. That wererat is pretty much surrounded. Am I right in assuming that everyone pretty much has it at combat advantage? Or is it just trask and Baladir? In any event, whichever one of them next hits the wererat get to add 2d8 to their attack.
Then I'll attack the swarm with dazing strike.
Attack:+13 vs ac
Damage:1d4+4+2d8 and the traget is dazed.
So 29 to hit vs ac
18 damage and the swarm is dazed.

Trask is attacked by the swarm (20 vs AC 19). The rats gnaw happily (9 damage) and many stay around to keep gnawing (4 ongoing, SE). Trask gives a healing word (minor) to Fandango, healing him significantly (24 healed - 12 is his surge).
He then attacks the wererat with a righteous brand (24 vs AC), hitting it solidly and giving Brunhilde a bonus on her next attack (+3).
Trask, please give me a ST vs ongoing damage.
Amaril uncovers his sunrod, backs up, vanishes into the murk, and completely misses the wererat with an attack.
Fandango (already took damage and the aura attack) shifts as he stands back up. (I don't understand your attack. Is sneak in the attack an attack? Is it a standard or minor action? If it is a standard action, you can't do it and dazing strike. And you cannot daze a swarm. You can only daze one rat in the swarm which is meaningless.)
Fandango needs to provide a ST vs ongoing damage.
The rat swarm attacks Brunhilde (24 vs AC20), gnawing on her as well (9 damage, 4 ongoing, SE) (Brunhilde spins her axe in a sweeping blow hitting both the rat and the swarm. The rat is hit hard (12 damage). The blow really rakes through the swarm, though (17 damage).
Brun also needs a ST.

I see that Fandango stood up and shifted over. He then used Sneak in the Attack, targeting the wererat (Encounter, minor action, Until SONT, the next ally to hit the target and has CA on the target deals extra damage equal to your sneak attack damage.) That would most likely be Trask or Bal in their next turns. Fan then attacked the swarm with Dazing Strike. Nothing Fandango did required him to have CA.

Solak, Round 1:
Solak glances to his side, a bit confused, then looks back further and nods knowingly. He quickly backs up beside Amaril. Annoyed that he can't set the place ablaze, at least not with Fandango so injured, or he might think about it, he goes for the next best thing, sending bit of frost towards both the wererat and the swarm.
Seeing what the ugly swarm is doing to folks, he decides to go after it as well, seeing what kind of hive mind it has.
After that he decides that everyone needs to be able to see the wererat a bit better. A bright shine of light suddenly appears on the wererat's nose, right between his eyes.
(Note to DM: Intent with the light is to throw off the wererat, perhaps a penalty to hit, or maybe a penalty to REF defense. Thinking a sudden bright light in your eyes/face might just be a bit of an issue, at least for a few moments.)
- Move to R13.
- Icy Rays; +7 vs Ref, target one or two creatures, one attack per target, 1d10+5 cold dmg and immobilized until end of next turn.
- Action Point
- Illusory Ambush; +7 vs Will, 1d6+5 psychic dmg, target takes -2 to attack rolls until end of my next turn.
- Light Cantrip; minor action, light fills the target's square and all squares within 4 squares of it.

OK, I understand now. That was WAY more difficult than it should have been. I need sleep...
Brunhilde easily dislodges the rats clinging to her (ST vs ongoing damage).
Fandango shifts as he stands and, after nudging the wererat off balance for Baladir, attacks the swarm with a wicked dazing strike (29 vs AC). He quickly learns, though, that a swarm cannot be dazed. Sure, one rat has little stars circling it's head, but the rest seem blissfully unconcerned. His attack does skewer a passle of the varmints, though (18/2 = 9 damage).
Solak moves back, fires off two icy rays, and then realizes rats are much shorter than undead (miss, miss). Undetered, he immediately resets and fires off another spell.. which is equally futile. Peeked, he tries to cast light on the rat's nose. As this is a hostile action, either Solak needs to make an attack roll or the rat gets to defend. In this case, I let the rat defend 'cause I have his rolls here. The rat, seeing the spell coming, ducks at just the right time and messes up the spell (ST = 20).
Baladir didn't get a ST in vs the rats last round - and I forgot to ask - so he gets one without penalty.
Fandango also didn't give a ST despite being asked 2 times.
Baladir manages to shake off the rats.
Fandango does not, they keep chewing.

The rogue outside the room tries to slam the secret door open on Baladir (20 vs Str). Baladir, braced and ready for just such a move, catches the door on one hip and shoves it back closed. Inside the room, you hear a thump and a yelp followed by cursing.
Baladir takes 2 damage from the rats currently on him. The rat swarm flows over him in an attack (13 vs AC 21) but can't find purchace. Baladir challenges the rat and (last attack rolled over) misses completely - being still a bit off balance from the door. He recovers (AP used) and unleashes a most righteous smite (29 vs AC). Trask takes 6 ongoing damage as rats find gaps in his armor. The swarm also tries to overwhelm him (21 vs AC 19), biting him for 5 more damage. Trask disengages and shifts south to free up his ranged attacks. His first attack (19 vs AC) just barely misses the rat and the second shot is easily avoided. The cleric does not dislodge the rats (ST 3) or the burning from the earlier bite (ST 2).
Amaril curses the wererat and then fires off a pair of eldritch blasts (AP used). The first (17 vs Ref) just misses as well. Wererats seem very agile. The second bolt is easily dodged.

Fandango pauses to let Brunhilde flank..
Trask takes 6 ongoing damage from rat bites as he gives Baladir a healing word (24 healed). He then aims a lance of Faith at the rat swarm but misses it. The swarm is now his quarry. Trask also shakes off the rats and ongoing effects - but not before he becomes bloodied.
Amaril curses the rat swarm and then tries to blast it. The only one more surprised than the rats is Amaril himself as his blast hits home (23 vs Ref) and vaporizes a large number of rats (14/2 = 7 damage).
The swarm is down to less than half it's original size (bloodied.)
Brunhilde takes 4 damage from rats in her armor as she moves to flank the swarming rodents. Her subsequent attack (28 vs AC) hits hard - mowing through the pile and destroying the single rat she just marked (8 damage).
Fandango, flanking the rats, gets attacked by them. Actually, so does Brunhilde. The rats are easily avoided by both (11 vs AC 18, 14 vs AC 20). Fandango attacks with a sly flourish (which the rats completely fail to appreciate) but he slices viciously through them nonetheless (10 damage). Only a few rats remain in the swarm.
Solak tries to focus on rat minds for a mental attack but they are dying to fast for him to get a good lock on the few living ones (natural 1). Frustrated, Solak begins banging his head with his staff. Double vision just MIGHT improve his aim.

Fandango pauses to get a second wind (12 hp, +2 to defenses until EoNT). actually not sure you can do this. The wrestling was probably a standard action and so is SW, but I'm not awaked enough to get anal about it. So the wrestling was a move action and this is std. I reserve the right to rule differently next time :p
Amaril surprises everyone by bullrushing Baladir. Baladir, getting an inkling of what people want, allows himself to be shoved into the square vacated by Fandango. A move and then a shove would not leave you enough actions to open the door. Since the door is secret on this side, finding and activating the catch make it a std action. Thus the bullrush modification.

The party enters the room and pauses to rest.
After a few more nips from the rats (4 damage) the party helps Brunhilde rid herself of those pesky rats.
Everyone gains 1 AP and 100 XP and loses the temp hit points.
Fandango surges 1x (47/48)
Trask surges 2x (42/45)
Baladir surges 2x (57/57)
Brunhilde surges 3x (59/62)
Baladir and Trask feel a bit tired - more so than they should. Both realize they have contracted a disease from the wererat bites. The initial effect is both lose a healing surge that will not be regained until the disease is cured. ST vs disease can be rolled after each extended rest. If you roll above the high DC (I'll have to verify what that is but I think it's 22 or 23) then you get better. Below the low DC (16ish, iirc) you get sicker. In between, and there is no change.

Not that I doubted you but good to know you aren't revising special attacks to at-wills when the rolls miss!

Thanks. You'd think I'd know this.... Edited my post just to say so.

Brun will focus on one target this time, as it appears the regeneration will negate the secondary nicks of a cleave.
Reaping strike on Dire Rat (the same rat she primaried last time) (+11 vs AC, 1d12+7 damage on hit, 5 on miss)

Solak smiles as he sees the mobs group together. He gestures with his staff and a burst of flame engulfs the lot. Wererat 2 (31 vs ref) and the wererogue (26 vs ref) and the dire rat begin to burn (12 damage). Dire rat 2 manages to avoid conflagration. Dire rat1 is bloodied.
Baladir issues a divine challenge to direrat 2. He then swings at dire rat 1 in an attempt to finish it off. His attack only just hits (20 vs AC) but wounds it nicely (12 damage).
Direrat 1 heals some as it attacks Brunhilde. His bite (23 vs AC 20+2) just slips past Trask's magic and Brun gets another painful bite (6 damage, 2 ongoing SE). (This is not cumulative.)
Amaril the apparently insane, teleports into the middle of the pack. There, he calmly curses the wererogue and, with a wink, vanishes in a blast of violent energy. This energy blasts all the creatures around: Direrat 1, direrat2, Wererat2 and the were rogue. All take damage (10, 10, 13, 12) and are immobilized. Wererat 2 is bloodied.
The giant rat tries to bite Baladir (20 vs AC) but misses.
Trask (will act after I get back from my morning meeting).

Trask casts fear on dire rat 1 (24 vs Will) and the rat turns to flee in panic (giving Baladir and Brunhilde a free basic melee attack against it.) Unfortunately, it is immobilized and cannot move.
Brunhilde lashes out (8+11 vs AC) but just misses.
Baladir also slashes at the rat (2+8 vs AC) and misses badly.
Wererat 2 heals some but doesn't wake up (ST 9).
Fandango ...

Dire rat 1's bad day continues. It is cursed, marked, feared, immobilized and now attacked by Fandango. The sly attack (25 vs AC) hits and brings the poor rat to within a gnat's whisker of death (12 damage).
Dire rat 2 heals and attacks Baladir (28 vs AC), biting him lightly (6 damage) but painfully (2 ongoing damage, SE).
Brunhilde takes 2 ongoing damage from her increasingly painful bite. She then unleashes a reaping strike on Dire Rat 1, hitting it (21 vs AC) and ending its, until recently, quite pleasant life. The adrenaline surge from her attack seems to nullify the pain of bite (ST 20).
The body of the dead dire rat changes to that of a short, wiry human.
Dire Rat 2 attacks Baladir in a fury (19 vs AC) that is more angry than accurate. Baladir blocks it easily with his shield.
Wererat 1 leaps suddenly out of the darkness to the east and catches Baladir by surprise (20 stealth vs passive perception). His attack, though (rolled 4) is thwarted as it stumbles over the giant rat. The attack misses.
End of round 2.

Baladir swings a valiant strike against wererat 1, hitting it (24 vs AC) and wounding it badly (15 damage). He then draws on his reserves and strikes quickly again - this time with a piercing smite (24 vs AC). Again, the blow strikes true (10 damage), this time enraging all those around the victim.
Wererat 1 is barely still standing.
Amaril sends a blast at wererat 1, striking him (26 vs Ref) and pretty much obliterating him (14 damage). Wererat 1 is drops dead.
