View Full Version : How are those casters workin' for ya?

Noticed something that may or may not be anything...
It SEEMS as if the casters in our game 3 are having more trouble hitting mobs in general, than the melees do. It seems to me they're getting a lot of misses. Is that part of the game mechanic, or is it some sort of issue? Are the melee's a bit more min-maxed and thus have better ATK scores? Are the ATK oriented feats better for melee PC's?
I'm kinda feeling pain for Amaril and Solak... they seem to roll a lot of misses (even 2 or 3 per round), which has to be disheartening.
Do the casters in your "game" have a bit more trouble hitting mobs? Am I imagining this?

For me, mostly it seems to be just bad rolls.
My stuff is mostly +7 to hit vs For/Ref/Wil. To the best of my metagaming knowledge enemies will vary on which defense is better than the others, but will often have one or two that are lower, or one that is much higher. As such, I don't think +7 is too bad. Got a couple at +8, and if they're bloodied +1 as well.
This is one reason I'm looking at the Implement Expertise feat (see the thread that Shiz posted with the explanation from WotC about it) even though I wouldn't mind a more RP feat this next time.

I also think I'm getting ****ty rolls. Altho my mouth waters every time I see Ash attack w/ something like +13. Granted he's rolling against AC which is typically higher than what a caster is rolling against. But I'm still jealous. :lowlol:

Ah, OK. +7/8 is indeed respectable, though not as high as our melee's at +10/11 but yeah, it's in the ballpark as those targets are "typically" lower. If it's rolls, that sucks. Cuz it LOOKS like you guys are whiffing a whole lot. Not that I'm complaining, just feeling for ya.
On the melee side, there are a lot of +1 to +3 bonuses for things like flanking, weapon expertise, special training, etc. which really add up. 2h weapons also have a lot of to-hit and dmg modifiers, it seems.

Melees get proficiency with weapons which give them a + to hit on top of their stat bonuses, that casters don't get w/o a feat. I think that influences caster's ability to hit somewhat.

I'm also really looking at the feat that gives me the +2 CA advantage from range if you melee folks have something flanked.

Like others have said, I think it is both.
I'm playing a caster in greebos game. I miss a LOT but then, to be fair, I also am rolling terribly. As Greebo said, the weapon proficiency helps a bit.
I don't know if will/reflex is generally higher or lower than ac in monsters.

Generally AC is highest across the board from what I'm seeing.

If it's like many games, magic typically hits harder than melee as well. So they may give magic users a lower chance to hit, expecting the hits to have a greater impact. Thus giving an overall similar damage per encounter to melees.

Yeah - not so much in 4e so far. The most damage output I've seen to date is from melee classes - barbarians, specifically.

Yeah - not so much in 4e so far. The most damage output I've seen to date is from melee classes - barbarians, specifically.Because of something inherent to the class (raging?) or because many wield hard-hitting, high-crit weapons? (or both?)

And as a wizard, and more of a controller wizard than blast, I'm not expecting to do as much damage. But yeah, would be nice to actually hit. But again, I'm thinking its mostly crappy rolls.

Hard hitting, high crit weapons, traits to reroll 1's and 2's on damage, and the ability to get another attack if you kill an enemy, for example. I've seen a 21 dmg from a 1st level barbarian.
