It doesn't take long to make the trip back to the Keep. You can see the sun starting to rise as you make your way through the ruins to the Keep entrance. Everyone heads back down the stairs and....?

Updated overall map attached.

Shiz
5th June 2009, 08:17 PM
Rend will scout down the entrance stairs before anyone else goes in. Guards may be back.

Sneak = 20
Then a Perception check to look around the room = 20

"We should clear the rooms we've visited already - and nobody fall in the pit again..."

EricStratton
8th June 2009, 09:34 PM
Rend (what form are you in?) descends the stairs. The bodies of your victims are still where you left them. You see footprints all over the room, including the little barracks and storage room, but you have no way of knowing if they were made before, during, or after your initial visit to the room.

The rest of the group heads down and you all head back to the torture chamber in combat formation. The large torturer (aka The Gimp) has been rolled out of the doorway where you left him. The rest of the room looks as you left it. Again, Rend takes a look around and is unable to determine if there are any new footprints.

You're currently in the torture chamber or the wide hallway just outside of it. You have a door to east and a door to the west both of which are closed.

Greebo
8th June 2009, 09:37 PM
West for starters?

Shiz

Rend is partial to either the eastern passage from the entrance hall or the double doors from the torture area. But he doesn't really care that much.

EricStratton
9th June 2009, 03:19 PM
Rend opens the western door. In it he sees boxes and crates. Looks like this is another storage room.

Updated overall map.

Shiz
9th June 2009, 04:06 PM
Rend will enter, waving everyone back, and examine the crates, Perc +10 = 24

Greebo

Greebo stays outside the door, clear of the blast arc.

EricStratton
9th June 2009, 04:32 PM
Rend looks very carefully. He picks through the old armor, broken weapons, boxes, and crates. Among the piles of junk he discovers a belt that is in obviously better shape than everything else in there.

Cilene and Sagar are the only people sans magic item so far, but this item only helps Heal checks so it is best given to someone who is likeliest to be unconscious. Which means Jagged!

Speaking of - I still haven't received Cilene's wish list. *nudge nudge*

As for this item, I decided there'd be a slim chance to find a level 1 item from someone's wish list in the pile. To my surprise the roll succeeded, so I looked thru the wish lists I'd received and realized only one person gave me a level 1 item - Maz. So I picked his belt.

Shiz

Lol. Care to re-phrase, Maz?

Let's move on to the eastern double doors.

Quervo
10th June 2009, 09:43 AM
no not really, I just threw a level one in there. With a 22 AC now and using more positioning powers i am less striker than what i started at. I picked it thinking I would need more Heal checks thrown on me at the time.

Shiz
10th June 2009, 09:46 AM
Cilene can claiim it since she has not magic yet. If she doesn't want it then Jagged can have it. Rend is a squishy melee too, but he hasn't been pounded on like Jagged.

Across the hall, east.

EricStratton
10th June 2009, 03:54 PM
You open the door and head on into the hallway. The hallway is brightly lit by torches set along the walls. You can see the hallway widens but you can't see more than that. To the east, a thick curtain hangs down from the ceiling blocking any further view.

EricStratton
10th June 2009, 04:40 PM
Shiz sneaks forward to the corner of the room. Despite moving fairly quickly, he's so stealthy not even the walls know he's there (31-5 (moving > 2 squares)=26 stealth). He peaks around the corner. Two goblins sit at a table, playing cards, their weapons close at hand. Another curtain hangs from the ceiling to the NE. On the table between the goblins sits a small bronze bell.

The wooden tiles are a table.

Shiz
10th June 2009, 04:46 PM
Shift into as lifelike a wolf form as I can, jump on the table, grab the bell in my mouth QUIETLY and run back to the group. I am not trying to hide form the goblins, just get the bell without it ringing.

EricStratton
10th June 2009, 09:33 PM
Shiz shifts into a mostly wolf form and continues sneaking up on the goblins. He's able to make it all the way to the table and suddenly up on it without them seeing (16+11-5=22 stealth). The goblins eyes grow very large at the sight of a mostly wolf-like creature suddenly interrupting their card game.

Surprise round!

Roll init, rest of you.

http://www.primeaxiom.com/rpgt/scene.asp?ID=qun27pji3sew2dielae4hmugdkgovjvetny1h bnlfycmglfluqcbqbbptgwwdqmf

After discussing this w/ another DM I realized there were a fews ways this could go. The couple I debated over were: As soon as you start moving, whether you're stealthy or not, it starts the surprise round. But then you don't get to grab the bell as you only get one action. Or you get up on to the table (assuming your stealth continues to allow you) and *then* start the surprise round as the goblins would surely know you were there then. This allows you to get up there and grab the bell but not necessarily avoid getting it. I went w/ the latter.

Shiz, I will need another roll during your turn (assuming you are going to grab the bell). It'll be against DEX. I'll tell you now that it won't be a tough DC.

Please remember surprise round rules - you get one action (standard, move, or minor), no APs can be used, and enemies grant CA. Unfortunately, the "one action" thing pretty much dictates what those of you that aren't Rend will do. But try to enjoy it nonetheless.

Surprise round:

Cilene runs to the corner of the room. She's out of shape (-5 to attack rolls until SoNT-Cilene-Round1) and bends over to catch her breath (grants CA until SoNT-Cilene-Round1).

Greebo readies EB in case an enemy comes into view.

Jagged and Mazirith prep their defenses (+2 to all DEF until SoNT-Round1).

Rend, standing atop the guards' table, bends down and grabs the bell in his mouth. He rushes a bit and doesn't get a very good grip on it. The bronze bell lets out a gentle "jingle, jingle." You don't think it was too loud but in the quiet of the room, you can't be sure.

Sagar readies Lance of Faith for any enemies that get close enough.

Start of Round 1:

Cilene recovers from her running (the "effects" of running only last until the *start* of your next turn. :)) and nails Goblin Warrior 1 (19 vs REF) with a painful Magic Missile (9 dmg). Then she turns and heads back to join the group (to D5).

Unless you wanted to hit Warrior #2.

The Goblin Warriors' eyes return to a normal size, and they pick their jaws up off the ground. They are so surprised by our heroes they don't even think to call out for help. Instead they pick their spears up and jab them deeply into the wolf that just stole their bell bloodying Rend (19, 22 vs 16 AC; 27-8-6=13 HP, bloodied). Then they both shift around the table toward the hallway.

Does it take an extra move or action to get onto the table? Ideally, Jagged would use combat sprint (+4 speed, +4 def vs. OAs) and move to K3 (10 spaces), followed by a great cleave.

Jagged lurches into action, moving with exceptional speed (Combat Sprint, +4 speed +4 def vs. OAs), jumping onto the table (K4) and striking at goblin (GS2) with refreshing vigor (Recuperating Strike, +9 vs AC, d12+5, Hit: gain 3 tHP).

I need to clarify this a bit. Tables and beds aren't difficult terrain. They just take 2 squares of movement to get up on.

Round 2 con't:

Greebo doesn't recognize the goblin at all.

Mazirith walks right through the open door. There's another curtain here as well. It's fluttering as if something just passed through it and he thinks he briefly saw the near-death Goblin Warrior from earlier.

Mazirith presses on moving past the goblin who misses him (OA: 18 vs 22 AC) and slashing the goblin easily (20 vs AC) killing him on the spot (7 dmg = dead) and maneuvering around some (to Q1).

Looking down at the dead goblin Mazirith recognizes it as a Goblin Cutter - not very useful fodder. Maz remembers they gain a tiny increase in power when they have combat advantage on their targets, and they are shifty little things - able to move around when missed by a melee attack.

As the Goblin Cutter dies, another one shows up to take its place (move to P1). It attacks Mazirith and, surprising no one, misses the heavily armored swordmage (21 vs 22 AC).

Two more swords come swinging through the curtain at Mazirith, both missing (8, 17 vs 22 AC).

Jagged hurries down the hallway to the southern curtain (M9).

Due to your inability to cut wall corners and the fact that medium creatures require 2 squares to move through the curtain, you can only make it to N7.

From behind Mazirith's curtain comes the yell you've been dreading. "Alaaaaaarmmmmm!" Then two javelin fly through the curtain at Mazirith but both miss (11, 17 vs AC). At this point the curtain's getting pretty torn up and you can start to see through it.

B/c it takes two squares of movement to make it past the curtain, you can't make it to P7 to charge.

Rend rushes over to help out Mazirith. He charges Goblin Cutter 2 Pouncing on him (19 vs REF) and ripping him to pieces (dead).

Sagar moves up to the northern hallway (P7).

Mazirith throws the curtain aside. Before it has the chance to flutter back down he attacks the Goblin Cutters (#s 3 and 4) with a Lightning Clash. The first attack cuts through the Goblin Cutter 3 without a problem (20 vs AC). Lightning jumps from the goblin into Goblin Cutter 4 hitting it easily (19 vs REF). Both creatures fall to the ground dead.

Mazirith then pulls back the curtain and takes a step into the room. He finds himself in yet another storage room (wood tiles in here are boxes that are, again, difficult terrain.) facing two goblin warriors. One of which is bleeding all over the floor; you recognize him as the one that ran from the first room.

Let me know how far you want to move now that you've seen the room.

Just then Jagged hears a door open and voices - "Did you hear the bell?" "Someone yelled alarm." "What's going on?!" A Goblin Cutter runs through the curtain to the north of Jagged stopping dead in his tracks at the site of the Shifter and the disheveled room.

The Goblin Cutter lets out a cry of surprise. Then he quickly pulls out his short sword and lunges at Jagged (20 vs 16 AC) cutting his arm (32-4=28 HP).

Then something runs into a large barbarian. "Ooph! What the hell?!" Suddenly a sword comes swinging wildly through the curtain almost hitting the Cutter instead of Jagged (7 vs 16 AC).

Another two Goblin Cutters come streaming through the curtain past Jagged who takes the opportunity to attack them both hitting and killing the first (20 vs AC; dead) but missing the second who continues up and attacks Greebo. The sword easily slashes through the warlocks thin clothing (24 vs 17 AC; 29-4=25 HP).

She casts a Scorching Burst on the two Goblin Warriors which (19-5, 23-5 vs REF) just misses the first and hits the second goblin burning it significantly (10 dmg) but not killing it.

The Goblin Warriors both converge on the newly appeared Wizard. Goblin Warrior 1 is about to jab his spear easily (20+2(CA) vs 16 AC) into Cilene's side but Mazirith channels a shield around Cilene protecting her from the damage (30-(6-6)=30 HP). Goblin Warrior 3 gets a drop of sweat in his eye and ends up spearing the wall (natural 1).

Another goblin warrior comes barreling past Jagged who is able to almost saw the goblin in half as it passes by (OA: 8+9 vs AC-2 (Roar); 19 dmg, bloodied). The goblin turns around and attacks Jagged hitting easily (21 vs 16 AC) but inflicting only a minor cut (28-4=24 HP).

Jagged sees the double doors at the end of the hall open and then close behind a goblin who heads north toward Sagar, Mazirith, and Cilene.

Done. But I thought that the target had to be currently under the mark of Aegis of Shielding to get the +3 to dmg. The wording confuses me.

Channeling Shield
Trigger: An attack hits you or an ally within 10
squares of you
Target: The creature hit by the triggering attack
Effect: You reduce the damage the target takes
from the triggering attack by 5 + your Constitution
modifier (+3).
Aegis of Shielding: The next successful attack
you make before the end of your next turn deals
extra damage equal to your Constitution modifier
(+3).

Thoughts anyone?

Oh, wait, I see. The ****ty wording appears to be specific to Swordmages. FR Player's Guide pg 26:

[-]8+4? Your character sheet says +5. And don't you get +1 for bloodied opponent?[/-]

Mazirith shifts toward Goblin Warrior 3 (P4). Then he uses Luring Strike on the goblin cutting it a bit (25 vs AC; 10+4=14 dmg), causing them to trade places. Maz finishes the sword flourish by shifting north (P3) and marking Goblin Warrior 3.

Before Jagged has a chance to act two more goblins come out of the eastern doors. One of them is a skinny thing wearing robes and wielding a rod. The other is a big fat goblin wearing leather armor that bulges from his weight. He has thick, knotty fingers, and cruel eyes. He's carrying a club and crossbow.

The fat one just makes it out of the door before he closes it behind himself. Both goblins catch a glimpse of Jagged through the torn and tattered curtain. The skinny one makes a motion with his hands and then fires a large green pointy ball at Jagged. The ball hits (17-2 (cover) vs 13 WIL) and spreads over Jagged's body being absorbed into him. Jagged doesn't feel any different but realizes that fire spreads through his joints when he moves even the slightest bit. (You're going to take big damage if you move during your turn. SAVE ENDS so make sure to roll a saving throw).

The fat goblin fires his crossbow at Jagged but he's still breathing hard from having walked and the bolt sails high (14-2 (cover) vs 16 AC).

Standard: Sucking up the possibility of an OA she will Magic Missile GW3
Move: These look handled so she will run (god you guys are keeping me in shape) to Q9

Spending an AP she will cast Scorching burst centered on S13.

Think positive thoughts while I roll!

Round 5:

Sucking up the possibility of an OA Cilene casts Magic Missile on Goblin Warrior 3. The goblin's swing misses (10 vs 16 AC) as the Magic Missile slams into its face (natural 20) gushing blood all over the place (14+13=27 dmg, bloodied).

Believing Mazirith and Sagar to have this room handled she turns and runs off to the other battle front (Q9; -5 to attack, grants CA).

(Spending an AP) she casts Scorching burst on the newly appeared goblins. The blast easily catches Goblin Warrior 5 (25-5 vs REF) and barely catches (but does catch) the skinny and fat goblins (20-5, 23-5 vs REF) burning each of them (all: 7 dmg).

Both Goblin Warrior 1 and Goblin Warrior 3 attack Mazirith whom they have flanked. Only one slash hits (24+2(CA), 10+2(CA) vs 22+1 (bloodied foe) AC) cutting Maz's arm (30-5=25 HP).

Goblin Warrior 5 steps to the NE a bit (S11) and throws a javelin at Cilene which hits due to Cilene's exhaustion (15+2(CA) vs 16 AC) slicing her side as it flies past (30-6=24 HP).

Rend ends up locking eyes with Goblin Warrior 5 (25-2(cover)) pulling it toward him (O13) and assaulting its mind (7+18=25 dmg, bloodied).

Rend then (uses an AP and) takes a defensive stance (+2 to all DEF).

Finally, Rend looks hard at the skinny and big goblins. He realizes that the skinny one is a Goblin Hexer. Round 5 con't:

Mazirith (double) moves to confront the remaining goblins (S10). Then (spending an AP) he attempts to Lure the Hexer to him but the attack misses (11 vs REF).

The Hexer attempts to recharge the Hex he used on Jagged but forgets the words. Seeing that he and his cohorts are being corner he waves his wand around himself. Suddenly a thick fog gathers around him spilling into the halls spreading out 15' from him. The three goblins are harder to see now (concealment) and, while the goblins appear unimpeded, you find it hard to see out of the fog (-2 to attack rolls if you're in the fog even if your target isn't).

Water tiles = fog.

Then the hexer takes a step to the west (Q13). The fog does not follow him.

Balgron sees the tired Cilene and smiles knowing he has the upper hand. He fires his crossbow at her and, despite her cover behind the wall, the bolt (22-2(cover)+2(CA) vs 16 AC) *thunks* into her. Because she's hunched over trying to catch her breath (CA from the running) the bolt strikes her in the shoulder, exits her chest, and then enters her thigh causing blood to squirt all over Greebo (24-(5+8(CA bonus))=11 HP, bloodied).

Balgron laughs and laughs. "Does it hurt? Does it huuuuurt?" Still laughing he reaches behind him and opens the door taking a step into the doorway. You see the fog spill into the now opened door.

Baldron does have cover behind the other door. Not sure if it'll matter since he's in the fog already but just so it's said - he does.

Not that Greebo can passively see right at this moment. Give me a Perception roll and I'll tell you the results of that. You know he has a club slung on his back. I think you are good. Maz can come down to you easily and the other two goblins are now trapped, assuming those other doors are dead ends.

Also, couldn't you have cursed another gob that turn?

I suppose, if I used regular curse (minor) on fatty then my rod (free) on the hexer, but I can only attack 1 per turn, so why bother. And when I started, I had no LOS to the hexer

Round 6 con't:

Mazirith moves deeper into the fog to attack the Hexer (R13). The Hexer ducks under Mazirith's Luring Strike (16-2(concealment) vs AC) shifting south (Q14) as Mazirith shifts toward Balgron (S14).

The Goblin Hexer again fails to recharge the hex he used on Jagged. So he casts Blinding Hex on Mazirith which connects with Mazirith's face (24 vs 15 FORT) burning his eyes (25-10=15 HP, bloodied) and blinding him (SAVE ENDS).

BLINDED
✦You grant combat advantage.
✦You can't see any target (your targets have total
concealment).
✦You take a -10 penalty to Perception checks.
✦You can't flank an enemy.

Waving his hand in front of Mazirith's face, Balgron starts laughing again. He steps back into the room (see updated map link) and fires his crossbow. The bolt hits Mazirith right in his heart (natural 20). The bolt does extra damage as Balgron has combat advantage over the blind swordmage. Mazirith sinks to the floor blood pooling around him (15-(21) = -6 HP, unconscious, dying).

Balgron howls laughing, tears streaming down his face.

Jagged looks on helplessly and continues his defensive stance, but he's finally able to shake off the effects of the Hexer's spell (save: 19).

End of Round 6

The two vertical wood items in the room are beds. The horizontal one is a desk. An area of the room is sectioned off with curtains that you can't see past.

The door opens into the room Balgron is currently in and it does have a door handle (like this (http://www.elitebarns.com/images/zooms/door-handles-zoom.jpg) only not so...whatever that is). W/ that knowledge, use your imagination and we'll see how it goes.

Round 7:

Cilene joins the group and casts Scorching Burst in between the Hexer and Goblin Warrior 5. The Warrior's able to dodge the heat (11 vs REF) but not the Hexer (18 vs REF). It's burned painfully (7+12=19 dmg).

Goblin Warrior 5 still laboring just to breath and thanking his lucky stars that he's still alive takes a step back (P13) and flings a javelin at the floor. It was meant for Rend but "it slipped. I think my hand's wet or something. Errr...." (9 vs 16+1 AC).

Rend shifts into the fog (O13) and trades a bad miss for a bad miss with Goblin Warrior 5 (2 + something -2 (concealment) vs something = miss I assume).

Sagar will move to P10. He'll take a second move to R13. There, he will use his AP to attack the hexer with a healing strike (+5 vs AC, 2d12+5 damage to the hexxer, Surge +3hp to Maz).

19 vs AC
15 damage (if hit)
11hp to Maz (if hit)

EricStratton

Round 7 con't:

Sagar moves to confront the Goblin Hexer (R13 via P10). There, he will (use his last AP and) attack the Hexer with a Healing Strike. The attack is a good one (19-2(concealment) vs AC). Sagar's axe cuts deep (19+15=34 dmg, bloodied) and blood flows from the stomach wound. The successful attack transfers health into Mazirith who regains consciousness (-6->0+11=11 HP, bloodied, blind, prone).

Greebo closes the door in Balgron's face. The laughing stops from within the room. Greebo then grabs <something> and slides it in through the door's handles.

Maz is no longer dying. He needs to allow you to take his sword now. Unless you want to use something else.

Mazirith...

Round 7 con't:

Mazirith gets back to his feet. He's a bit wobbly, and who can blame him, but he makes it and then gives himself a good once over healing up some (11+9=20 HP, no longer bloodied; +2 to DEF until SoNT-8).

Then he's able to rub the crap out of his eyes and his sight returns (Save vs Blind: 12).

The goblin hexer finally remembers the words to the hex he used on Jagged. He looks up as Greebo slams the door. You hear him grind his teeth as he realizes he's caught in a vice between the two sides.

He gathers himself up and fires the newly remembered Stinging Hex at Sagar. Before he can get the words out of his mouth Sagar sees an opening and swings his axe (16+6-2(concealment) vs AC) slicing the Hexer good (34+10=44 dmg, still bleeding).

Finishing the spell, the Stinging Hex slams into Sagar washing over him (26 vs 16 WIL). As with Jagged, it does no immediate damage but Sagar knows that if he moves he's gonna get a hurt real bad (SE).

Finally, the Hexer shifts toward Rend and continues chanting the spell that keeps the Fog going.

You don't hear anything coming from Balgron or the room. Balgron has been removed from the map as you're now unsure of where he is.
