Urvi opens the door, which squeaks like a violin being dragged down a chalkboard. All hopes of surprise are lost, but what the party sees is just a hallway that proceeds forward (south) about 40 feet then makes a turn to the east.
The chittering is louder, as if its just around the corner.

Dont we have to move around the corner and see the rats?

What rats? You don't see any rats.
You're rolling initiative because you've entered a situation in which order of movement matters.

Four statues of displacer beasts, their eyes glowing amber, stare at you. Beyond them is a candlelit altar. Tied to the front of it is a human female, her eyes wild with terror.

Either way, I seem to have more than a passing knowledge of them. Perhaps at one point I lived right down the road from a displacer beast farm and would spend pleasant evenings sitting on the farmhouse porch, discussing displacer beast husbandry with the farmer and his wife.
Greebo
15th June 2009, 03:14 PM
Actually I used the original roll + 9
Displacer beasts are not, as far as you know, able to look like statues. These are probably just ordinary statues with glowing eyes for effect.

Raj will try to quietly move to A4 to stand next to Tor. (move)
He will try to remember what he knows of the creatures (arcana +6) (Minor?)
and ready Burning Spray (close blast 3, +5 vs ref, 1d8+7 fire damage, fire shield on me - 3 damage to next melee attacker that hits me.) at B6 or C6 when at least 2 mobs are in range to take damage.
Move
What about statues (arcana - 19)
Triggered attack:
Target 1 - 22 vs Ref
Target 2 - 12 vs Ref
Target 3 (if needed) - 10 vs Ref
13 damage

Which creatures are you talking about? The statues? Or the rat like creatures? The rat like creatures are nature.
It's not clear from the map - I'm sorry, I meant to explain this;
In the room are 4 statues that look like displacer beasts, and 3 rat like creatures that look like real rat like creatures.

Understood.
The arcana check is for the statues - what creatures do they represent, are they stoned real creatures or clever carvings, do they seem to be traps.
The triggered attack is for self-ambulatory creatures (presumably, the rats).
If they get close enough, I will flame broil them (or, at least try).
Greebo
15th June 2009, 04:12 PM
Pretty much what I told Duma - the statues are statues. They lend ambiance to the temple like feel of the room, what with the woman you think is Mirtala being bound to the altar with 3 rats pestering her.

I assumed moving and the perception used up my turn, but it occurs to me that the perception might be a minor ... do I need to post an action?
Greebo
15th June 2009, 07:06 PM
The perception is a standard action when doing it actively
Perception (Wisdom)
Make a Perception check to notice clues, detect secret doors, spot imminent dangers, find traps, follow tracks, listen for sounds behind a closed door, or locate hidden objects.
This skill is used against another creature’s Stealth check or against a DC set by the DM. In most situations, the DM uses your passive Perception check result to determine if you notice a clue or an imminent danger.
Perception: No action required—either you notice something or you don’t. Your DM usually uses your passive Perception check result. If you want to use the skill actively, you need to take a standard action or spend 1 minute listening or searching, depending on the task.
✦ Opposed Check: Perception vs. Stealth when trying to spot or hear a creature using Stealth. Your check might be modified by distance or if you’re listening through a door or a wall (see the table).
✦ DC: See the table for DCs when you’re trying to hear or spot something, searching an area, or looking for tracks.
✦ Success: You spot or hear something.
✦ Failure: You can’t try again unless circumstances change.
✦ Searching: When actively searching an area or looking for something specific, assume you’re searching each adjacent square. The DM might allow you to do this as a standard action, but usually searching requires at least 1 minute

You do not have surprise - the door ruined the chances of that.
Duma rushes forward and launches an ill aimed attack at one of the big hairy rats (8 vs. fort). The shot goes wide, hitting nothing.
Rajkelleran advances, and studies the statues. He confirms, they're just statues with magically glowing cheap glass eyes. He readies an attack. (Note Duma is in front of you now, if that changes anything, like where you want to be standing?)

The rats are not were rats, but Dire Rats - basically an over sized rat with a large appetite and which almost always carry a pretty nasty disease compared to their own rather mediocre ranking in the animal monster kingdom. It is unusual to see rats in an environment like this - at least alone it is.

Ok he's been on and gone, so... Jacoby, Misdirected Mark on the closest rat with...oh how about Raj as the marker...
Attack: +4 vs. Reflex
Hit: 1d8 + 4 damage, and the target is marked by an ally within 5 squares of you until the end of your next turn.
And that'll be 12 damage. :D
Greebo
17th June 2009, 06:10 AM
Jacoby also advances and knowing what Raj has planned, steps forward and fires a misdirected mark at one of the rats (#1) with flawless aim. The rat is hit easily for 12 damage and thinks Raj is a real jerk.
DM Note = update damage table on rat 1
Jacoby ALSO spots and points out to you a figure creeping along in the shadows along the south wall. It's a gnome skulk, and it was pretty well hidden and nearly escaped Jacoby's notice as well.

A magic wand suddenly pops back into existence in Jacoby's hand accompanied by what sounds like a deep, supernatural grumbling in an arcane language known as Supernal, and the rat takes even more damage.
The rats move in to attack the party, having no idea what Raj has planned. Raj leaps on his opportunity (initiative adjusted) and launches his attack, which hits the first, just misses the second, and flies right over the third. (Dire rat 1 13 more dmg; bloodied)
Rat attacks 1 vs. Jacoby (11 vs ac14; miss), 2 vs. Duma (24/crit hit), and 3 vs. Shere (12 vs ac15). Only Duma is hit (6 dmg) and Duma suddenly feels strangely ill at ease (risk of infection - save on your next turn)...

I note that Urvi, the meatshield, is currently blocked out of the combat arena ... this could be an issue
Shere will swing his flail into the corner rat #3 (3 rat, corner pocket!) (Bond of Retribution; Standard; +6 vs AC, 1d10+4 dmg, if someone else attacks me corner rat takes 4 radiant), and then steps back (A3) to allow Urvi access to the fight (Shift; Move)

Yeah, I didn't know how that worked in 4e ; in 3e she'd focus or something to bring her to the top of the order (20+mod init), then delay to after my turn, but without my phb i couldn't really look up the mechanic in 4e to see if it's feasible ... she'll probably be up in half an hour or so and post her round 2 action

Round 1:
Urvi delays till after someone moves so she can get into the combat.
Round 2: One Shere moves, Urvi moves into the spot he was occupying (move action to B4). She marks the rats (rat 2 and 3 I believe according to the map) in front of her (free action), and then attacks it using Weight of Earth (+6 vs AC, 1d12+4 damage, slowed till the end of my turn, standard action).
Greebo

Urvi delays.
Round 2
Having been spotted, the skulk slips into an advantageous position by one of the statues and takes aim at Jacoby, determining him to be the greatest threat so far. The skulk aims its crossbow (20vs AC14) and a crossbow bolt appears in Jacoby's side (9 dmg).
Shere attacks a rat, missing wildly, and then gets the heck out of dodge, allowing space for Urvi.
Urvi steps up to the plate, marks rats 2 and 3, and attacks Rat 2 with the weight of the world behind her swing (24 vs. AC; hit). The rat is hit hard (10 dmg) and moves more slowly.

Duma unleashes astral fire which forms into blades centered on the rats. While only one rat (#2) is hit (9 dmg; bloodied), Urvi, Raj, Duma and Jacoby all are now shielded by the blades. (I've decided that one CAN be one's own ally and so the caster can gain the +ac bonus)
Duma save the save vs. disease till the end of the fight. I misread when that takes hold.
Jacoby shouts triumphantly, and two of the rats (1 & 3) quake with fear. Rat 1 up and dies. Rat 2 is unaffected. Rat 3 is hit (10 dmg). Chaos ensues and the battlefield is reordered! At the end, one rat is flanked!

Why are you committed to the attack? Did you do something last round that requires the followup? Otherwise, since you wouldn't have acted until after Jacoby acted, the fact that you don't want to do this means you wouldn't do this. so what you have already have been being going to do would not have been happened in the future.

A very frustrated dragonborn grumbles very loudly as he changes his plans and pokes his dagger at the rat in front of him. Much to everyone's surprise, the dagger (16 vs. AC) hits, and the rat is wounded further (6 dmg).
The rat (#2), annoyed at the Dragonborn, bites back (22 vs AC13+5), breaking Raj's scales (7 dmg) and exposing him to a fever.
The other rat advances on Duma and nibbles (19 vs AC16+5) but the teeth do not find purchase on the Deva.
Round 3 begin
The gnome skulk also takes aim at Duma (24 vs. AC16+5) and the bolt flies true, wounding him (5 dmg).
As a second bolt flies at Jacoby (23+2CA (stealth) vs. AC19), you suddenly realize that there's another Gnome Skulk, who's been lurking out of sight until it found an advantageous position. Jacoby is more concerned with the new wound he's received from the gnome's crossbow, however. (4 dmg; bloodied)

It's plus 8, not plus 9. I typed nine because in another game my main attack is always plus nine.

PR is an immediate skill triggered by an enemy attacking someone else. There is no way to actually do immediate skills though, so I just call it during my turn.

Raj, in the meantime, tries again to hit the last rat standing, but (13 vs fort) can't connect.
The Rat, in the meantime, can't get to Raj, though it tries (shift n), flanking Shere. It bites at Shere instead, the mark negating its combat advantage, but even if it hadn't (9 vs. AC), the bite is well off the mark. Never-the-less the bonds of retribution take hold, and the first skulk takes additional damage (2).
Gnome 1 drops its hand crossbow, pulls out a war pick, and swings at shere (14+2CA vs. AC15), which hits, but only just (4 dmg).
The DM suddenly realizes that Jacoby took FAR too much damage from that crossbow crit last round, as he should only have taken 9, not 17. (read the wrong weapon) Jacoby suddenly looks much better!
Gnome 2, shoots at Shere (24 vs. AC16) hitting (5 dmg).

Duma moves into the room. The woman you think must be Mirtala seems to cringe and shrink even further into herself. Duma fires energy at the invisible skulk, but misses the mark badly.
Jacoby moves up next to Shere and sings a healing song. He also tries to hit the skulk, but misses. Shere, however, feels much better (+11 hps)
Raj: moves and lays down a blast of fire, but still, no scream of gnomish pain. Most unsatisfying.
You listen, but all sounds stop. You realize that you now do not know where the skulk is, other than that he must be in the room somewhere.
New round.

Atty is right.
Raj drops another burst of fire to his north, but nothing living is hit (13 vs ref, maybe).
Round 10 I guess - lost track...
The skulk, seeing a gap in the lines, makes a break for it, revealing his position pretty clearly. He runs past Raj ...who stabs at the gnome with his dagger (20+2(ca) vs. AC), landing a blow (7 dmg), which doesn't stop him (opportunity attack) starting at G3, moving to E5, then B5, then north. He takes a second move, runs north and tries to jump the dwarf who is taken unawares. The gnome executes quite a skilled jump, clearing the dwarf, and disappears out of the room.

Duma thinks for a momment.
"My base instinct, friends, and perhaps common sense, says we pursue our fled foe. However, our first duty is to these whom we have rescued. Tactically it may be an error but common decency would have use make sure this woman is alright and able to move on her own before we move on. It won't do us any good if she collapses in the tunnels behind us."
Duma will sue insight (I guess we are still in the skill challenge?) to try and to get a sense of what it is the girl most needs to hear right now in order to get her ambulatory. Then he will say that thing to her.
Man! I am horrible at this game.

Actually it is pretty obvious that what the gnomes and rats were doing was tormenting Mirtala. She looks very badly off, and appears to be physically unwell as well as psychologically.
Letting Duma take his action now because turn order isn't so important just as long as nobody goes twice w/o everyone else going.
Duma - success (yes, with a 13) - you realize that Mirtala is suffering from serious mental trauma, and instead of talking to her, you explain to the party this fact. All Diplomacy rolls from this point forward gain a +2 bonus. Insight is now closed off as an option. (Insight 13, Success, 2/0)
