I'm just thinking outloud, and I know from a DM perspective what I'm saying is a nuisance, but from a player perspective it makes sense so I'm bringing it up for consideration by the GM as an interpretation of events.

Our voices carried, that triggered the attack. That attack would have been the beginning of combat, so the creature moved, constrained. Then the rat moved and released it. So, wouldn't we now be down to either rat 2 or our turns on the init order?

Or did they get a surprise round? (and if so, did the rats hear us talking too?)

Just thinking out loud. And trying to limit one round of smish-smash :o

Well the rats reacted to the guardian, not you - they only needed to know the guardian caught a scent.

My thinking was - you're down at one end of the hall planning an attack, and while you're in conversation, the thing you're talking about jumps at you - so yeah - a kind of startle to you since you were planning, thinking you were unheard/seen.

So yeah I guess it really came down to they got a surprise round - the beastie freaked out, moved (single action), the rats moved and freed it (free) and now combat starts...

well, if the beast got a surprise round from us talking, and the rats are reacting to it, then weren't they also surprised and unable to act?

Well basically the whole setup for combat to begin is pretty scripted - the beast notices you, the rats free the beast, combat starts, so I wasn't giving it a lot of thought.

You're basically angling for this to have been taking place as a part of the combat sequence, but the combat sequence started with the release of the beast, so it was a mistake to call it a surprise round.

and I'm honestly not trying to be difficult, I came to this line by thinking of what happened and realizing that I was having trouble figuring out the path that went from A to B without first stopping off at C for a quick drink

If you had achieved stealth, I was gonna give you the surprise round with the imprisoned demon. Since you did not, I decided that combat would start as defined - when the guardian is released. No advantage to either party that way except that dictated by the dice.

So in our part of the surprise round, our action was to talk.

The Demon's action was to jump about.

The rat's action was to release the demon.

There wasn't a surprise round, really.

Hey, what happened to Jacoby's Misdirected Mark?

I was going to go use it and then it wasn't there ... did he drop that for a melee attack when he respecced with arcana?

Greebo

He swapped it out for a different at-will

I took the reroll.

I said so. Rerolled.. even put in an edit comment.

How would you prefer to be notified of this? A new post or a post saying look at the old post, it's different?

Huh, lookit that. It does say so.

I think maybe it would have been better as a new post. Actually, it would be nice if the software showed an "updated" icon for edit'd posts as well as new, but that's kindof a weird thing and i understand why it doesn't do that :o

I've been thinking about asking my players to repost rather than edit; or at least post that there was an edit (making it weird , of coruse)

Greebo

/agree

If I ask a question, I look for a reply to the question, not an edit before the question was asked.

Sure, I post for Jacoby and Duma, and suddenly Ash and Shiz show up to post for themselves :o

I went with not sliding it when I was posting for Ash because, frankly, it goes before anyone can move in to close it, so all pushing does is let it charge again :o

I really was expecting you guys to fill in the ranks beside Urvi.

Otherwise, I can have Urvi flanked in the next round...

So I'm kinda waiting on sagar to make the call on pushing before I resolve.

Out of curiosity, seeing as I went before she moved it and thus didn't realize it was moving ... which squishy caster did you want to fill ranks against the brute? :o

Greebo

You and Raj are always fighting over being in the front lines...

attriel

True. His AC is as good as mine, you have a point there :o

Sagar

My AC really bites. I am slowly learning not to leap into the maws of demons. :p

Raj, I think it has cold resist, kinda like you said earlier ...

Maybe the switching to fire? Or blast the rats?

Greebo

*sigh*

Am i not being clear? I thought I was very specific - ONE time during an encounter, it can choose to invoke DR10 against one type of damage.

It's in the spoiler I gave to duma - and I thought Duma indicated that he was going to fill you in...

I thought that one time per encounter it could choose what element to get DR10 vs, and that it lasted for the encounter.

meaning that, having picked cold, cold would be less effective.

If it's only vs one attack, then why are you asking if he's sure he wants to do what he said? because i thought i was on your side in this discussion and now i'm lost :o

edit: oh, i see. he's attacking the rat not the demon. I think he took the same thought from what Duma got that I did :o

Greebo
18th August 2009, 12:59 PM
Again - feel like I'm somehow not being clear...

I didn't ask if he was sure he wanted to do what he said, I asked if he was sure he understood what I told Duma.

attriel
18th August 2009, 01:01 PM
Well, apparently I didn't, so could you elaborate for me?

Greebo
18th August 2009, 01:06 PM
****

*I* didn't understand the power.

Sorry - Raj is right - I didn't pick up that Variable resistance lasted for the rest of the encounter.

/me goes off to scream a bit

Playing games like these make me truly realize how mega-awesome computers are.

Well it was an interesting experiment. I wondered how bad it could be if they moved instead of shifted...LOL

Only for them, not for you.

Honestly I kinda am impatient to wrap this dungeon crawl up too.

Greebo
20th August 2009, 03:43 PM
I'm going to break out of character here, because this dungeon has a huge "just cause we can throw it in there" element to it.

These last few rooms are in that category. There are things to be found, not to mention one more prisoner and the last of the Brindol treasures, but don't look for too much with regard to story line advancing until you leave.
