View Full Version : 01-19 Shrine of the Obelisk

Greebo
25th August 2009, 10:56 AM
The door does not look dangerous to Urvi at all (12 perception - look, a door!), so she opens it.

Lines of pews make it clear that this was once a shrine dedicated to the rune-encrusted obelisk at the north end of the room. A gnome stands next to the obelisk, and sidling toward the doorway are two more wererats, their teeth glinting in the torchlight.

Does the gnome have cover, from the pews or something? Or could I hit him with a ranged attack off Shere? If the pews are not high enough to block LoS, I think I have a clear shot, if barely ... What i do next is, I suppose, dependent on whether I can hit him, and how many things are dead, I s'pose

Greebo

The pews do not offer cover, they are only difficult terrain. They'd offer cover to someone prone and adjacent to them

Raj steps up and unleashes a blast of fire that encompasses wererat 1 (23 vs. reflex) but at the last moment (15 vs. reflex) the other wererat avoids the flame. (11 fire dmg to #1).

Urvi calls on the spirits to heal her, and they do (no ongoing dmg). She places a magical challenge upon both rats, and then stonily swings her axe at the second wererat. The hit is perfect, and the rat (27 dmg) is instantly bloodied!

Duma calls down avenging light on rat 2, who, having keeled over from the massive damage caused by the Warden, avoids the searing laser light. (9 vs. fort)

However, Jacoby is makes a rather insulting limerick about the rat with a rather poor pun on the word "were", laced with magical power. While the magic hits, the pun is so bad, it doesn't do much damage. (25 vs. will, 6 dmg)

Shere, seeing the gnome standing by the alter, feels that this threat deserves some attention (Minor: Oath of Enmity). Shere sends a blast of psychic energy at the 2nd rat which links to the gnome (15 vs. will) causing both to reel in pain. He also swears an oath against the gnome.(10 dmg ea)

The gnome moves south, and unable to get a clean shot at Shere, sends a bolt of energy instead at Raj (20 vs. fort) which hits, causing Raj pain and clouding his mind (dazed - save ends; 7 dmg)

Urvi makes the earth's stomach growl, and the ground rises up and (21; 18 vs. fort) bites at the wererats (9 dmg). It's too much for wererat 2 (dead). Also she irritates the gods with her powers of defensive magic...(stupid thp's...)

Brief because I've got a ton of calls to make yet today...

Jacoby moves and misses.

Shere moves, and pounds the gnome. The gnome vanishes.

The gnome is invisible but not stealthy - you can hear her. You hear her shifting (move) away from Shere (to G8), and then you suddenly hear her somewhere else --- she's Teleported (move again)! She's in B11 - behind Urvi and Raj! She fades into view and a bolt of energy (minor) flies from her at Raj (11 vs. will) but misses.

The remaining rat, having no exit, slices at Urvi again (16 vs. ac), just missing her.

The one to the west of the crossroads, right? Ok - its a door like all the other doors - thick, iron bound, and closed. You don't immediately hear anything from beyond it, but these doors are pretty thick, so that doesn't mean much...

Shere opens the door OOC: and shoves Raj in to use dragon breath on everything that moves!!! and looks

The middle of this room has a sunburst mosaic in it. Passageways head west then north, north then east, and due east.

Detect magic on the sunburst (arcana +7).

24 total.

Greebo
2nd September 2009, 03:38 PM
Upon entering the room to get a close enough look at the mosaic, the mosaic turns black, and the light in the room is reduced (dim).

There is magic there, but it is not arcane in nature. The sunburst mosaic forms runes that remind you of the runes from the obelisk you just saw.

'Should we move through here quickly, or look more closely? I'm not sure if this would be a trap or decoration ...'

While speaking, Shere will dredge his memory for religious significance, beyond the obvious relations to the obelisk, of sunbursts of darkness ...

nope, nothing comes to mind (11 religion)

Greebo

Pretty much - again, looks very similar in materials and patterning to the obelisk.

Asharad

I believe this type of magic is restorative to the undead. Which would be typical in an area devoted to the worship of a foul god, like this one is.

Nodding, Shere suggests heading through the west archway, avoiding the sunburst on the way.

He then leads the way over and looks around the corner

Looking through the west door, what you see is that the hallway turns north and ends in another door - the door to the room which had held the demon. (Map to be updated later)

Sagar
4th September 2009, 08:36 AM
We'll check the northern door in the sunburst room, then.

I'm not good at it, but I'll check the door for traps. (+2 perc)

A still pool of water dominates this room, which is noticeably more humid than others inside the catacombs. A sheen of water droplets covers the walls.

Greebo
4th September 2009, 09:06 AM
Oh, and the hallway out to the west, once it turns north? You can clearly see a nasty looking faultline running along the length of the hallway after the bend. Looks rather dangerous.

Asharad
4th September 2009, 09:51 AM
Can anyone think of a good reason to get anywhere near that water?

Greebo
4th September 2009, 10:01 AM
Did I mention the large treasure chest in the bottom, obviously filled with gems and jewels and gold?

Only kidding... ;)

Even more arcana! (15...so not much more)

Greebo
7th September 2009, 11:23 AM
You sense that perhaps if you touch the water, something will happen.

attriel

Shere mutters to himself. 'Something? Something good, or something bad?'

He then walks back into the corridor and grabs one of the zombie corpses. Dragging it back in, he suggests 'Should we drop him in on the edge? If he stands up (again), we kill him (again). If he explodes, we know the pool is bad. If he just sinks to the bottom, at least it didn't cost us anything?'

As he rolls he zombie into the waters edge, Shere racks his vast knowledge of the arcane for any idea of what might happen ...

Zombie now in edge of pool

Greebo
8th September 2009, 10:23 AM
The corpse flops into the pool, disturbing the surface. As the surface ripples, images appear upon the surface, changing every 3 seconds. Many of the rooms you've seen before - so I'll reference them by number. See map:

Room 9, Room 10, Room 15, Room 21 (Sinruth's), Room 22, Room 23, ROom 24, and then room 5 and room 6.

All rooms you've seen before, all appearing as you last left them.

Jacoby will see if that effect triggers any memory about magical effects such as this...

Arcana +6, 15... dont think i know more than anyone else

Greebo
8th September 2009, 10:55 AM
No, nothing new. The ripples continue for a minute or so, and the image cycling continues. As the ripples fade away, so do the images.

The zombie corpse remains immobile.

'A scrying pool? What was here scrying? And where is it now ?'

Greebo

The boy pipes up, 'I dunno - those zombies and ghouls used to look in on me about every 10 minutes, but they never brought me here.'

attriel

'Hmm. Well, there was that room before the thrones (17), we didn't take a good look in there. Then, I guess, back to the room with the big wall of glowing light (4)?'

Perception on 17: 21

Greebo

In the room where the boy apparently had been held, in one of the alcoves containing skeletal remains, you find a very very high quality looking hand crossbow that has withstood the test of time. Other than that, there seems to be nothing worth a second look.

Asharad
9th September 2009, 10:48 AM
Did we miss some rooms on the upper level, perhaps?

attriel
9th September 2009, 10:49 AM
There's the room with the glowing scrying wall thing, and there's an exit off the first room that we haven't taken yet (north).

Greebo
9th September 2009, 04:05 PM
And the party ...

Sagar
9th September 2009, 08:01 PM
We have room 1 then north or we can go check the pits again.

attriel
10th September 2009, 10:07 AM
Shere suggests going back to the path we have not yet explored at all.

We go back to room 1 and open the north doorway

Returning to the entry chamber, you open the northern door (remembering the trick with the fire pots and avoiding the blasts).

You open the door, and discover that it leads to a hallway with stairs leading down. WAY down. Very long stairs... ending at a door.

Sagar
10th September 2009, 02:35 PM
Someone check the stairs for traps and let's go down!

attriel
10th September 2009, 06:53 PM
Shere inspects the stairs on his way down (Perception: 23), trusting his catlike reflexes o keep him safe

At the bottom, he'll listen at the door (Perception: 8), hearing nothing again through the thick doors

Greebo

There is nothing at all dangerous seeming about the stairs. The door is thick. You also smell faint musty smells.

Duh.. I said SAGAR would have it. Raj was momentarily distracted by the Rowdy Redbeard's show beaming through the feywild...

Ahem..

Raj will be ready to cough :p
