View Full Version : Scene: Welcome to the Jungle!

The party moves carefully through the forest. They can just make out the edge of the forest to the west, seeing bits of blue ocean through the trees. Mokdi has stated that it would be too dangerous to walk in the open; the Eaters travel up and down the coast by canoe and the party would surely be sighted.

As they walk, Lamsi tries to explain to KT what the Eater outpost might look like. In her gradually-improving standard Common, she explains that they've only really seen it from the sea, and it has a few rough huts and the number of Eaters varies; if they're out raiding, for example, there aren't many home.

She doesn't know what else to expect, but communicates that the Eaters tactics generally revolve around the ambush. Darters will slow or incapacitate a target, and then the clubbers move in to subdue it, tie it up, and carry it off, to be eaten later. She has no idea how long they keep their captives alive, but she knows some are probably carried away in the long canoes to other islands, to be eaten there at wild parties.

The Eaters are experts of camouflage and stealth, but never wear anything more durable than their loincloths and bits of hide. Many of them move through the jungle with little difficulty, traversing thick forest without slowing down. Their canoes vary in size, but most are large, carrying 10 men or more and are stabilized by an outrigger. They can move very fast when all are rowing, and there is often one of the passengers keeping time on a drum.

The Eaters have never directly attacked the village, but wait for the inhabitants to inevitably go on hunting excursions or water runs before ambushing the small groups. The villagers are becoming increasingly stressed, as the Eaters are getting more and more bold... the Eater outpost wasn't even in existance six months (or "long-moons", as Lamsi calls them) ago. The cannibals are obviously feeling more confident and becoming more daring.

Before long, the trail peters out, and the party is forced to hack their way forward. Lamsi and Darganti are on high alert, dark eyes scanning the greenery all around them. At one point, Darganti silently motions for the party to stop, and all freeze. He sneaks ahead about a hundred yards and then returns. False alarm. He never says what it might have been. The party notes he doesn't talk much at all.

The sun is high in the sky when the party finally breaks for a brief meal on the trail. Crashing notes that Lamsi and Darganti do not partake of their carried food, but Lamsi scampers up a nearby tree and tosses a few ripe mangoes down to Darganti. This tribe is very at home in the jungle. Darganti eats his silently, but Lamsi offers fruit to the rest of the party.

After their break, the continue on, and within half an hour, Darganti calls another halt. The party has reached a wide, muddy ravine. Brackish water flows slowly through it. Darganti scouts up one direction, Lamsi the other, but they both return and state that save the beach, there is no apparent way to cross it. Unless... Darganti and Lamsi speak quickly and lowly to each other, and Lamsi nimbly climbs a nearby tree, dagger in teeth. Scurrying out onto one of the huge branches, she deftly cuts a huge vine, and throws one end down to Darganti. When she returns to the ground, Lamsi attempts to explain.

"One take big vine. Swing far. Tie. We cross."

It appears that the intent is that one of the party swing across (Athletics) the ravine on one vine while carrying the end of another. The swinger will tie the second vine to a large tree, and the rest will use this as a rope bridge.

Lamsi appears to be getting ready to swing across herself, but Darganti stops her. Again. They speak, Lamsi a bit angrily. Darganti doesn't budge, but looks down at the muddy water and then offers the swinging vine and the bridge vine to the party.

Any takers?

Since Togar seems to hesitate a bit at Eric's suggestion, Damelon grabs the vine, checks to make sure his weapons are secure and...

Without pausing, Damelon wraps the bridge-vine around his upper arm and grabs the swing-vine. Leaping off the edge of the muddy ravine, he swings across and lightly lands on the other side (22 vs DC 20). It takes him only a minute or two to tie the other end of the bridge-vine to a nearby tree-trunk.

There is now a single, heavy vine stretched taut across the ravine, which is about 15' deep and filled with black mud and slow-moving water. Damelon stands on the south side, holding the swinging vine.

If you wish to cross the bridge-vine, roll an acrobatics check. If you wish Damelon to swing the vine back to you for an athletics attempt, that is an option also.

I imagine people can also elect to make a Climbing (athletics) check to go down the ravine and another to come up?

Erik looks at the swinging vine.

Erik looks at the tightrope.

Erik looks at the muddy ravine.

Erik sighs and gets down on all fours and then begins to shimmy across the ravine under the tightrope. He is about halfway across when, concentrating hard and balancing on the top of the vine, Crashing catches him up and trods on his fingers. Yelping, Erik plummets down, landing on his back in the mire.

At nearly the same time Sigurd, channelling his inner Ape Lord, swings across on the hanging vine, which Damelon has tossed back to him.

Lamsi and Darganti chuckle at Erik. Suddenly, Lamsi stops laughing. She stares down at the mud, just east of Erik.

Since that roll was money, I can tell you that Damelon throws a dagger at the croc (with First Strike bonus assumed).

Disheartening Strike (rattling, melee or ranged), +8+2[CA] vs AC, d4+3 damage, hit: target is -2 atk until EOMNT

If Damelon does not have init superiority, then he will use his move action to climb down to Erik (Athletics check = 14) and make a melee attack from G9 with Clever Strike. I would need to roll another d20 and a d8 dmg roll.

Lamsi redirects her outstretched arm, pointing somewhere west of Erik. Stirred by the sounds of the floundering human, crocodiles are emerging everywhere from the mud, it seems!

The newcomer (Crocodile 3) darts forward, and it's jaws snap shut (15 vs AC: hit) on the hapless Erik's leg, holding him fast (grabbed) and gashing him deeply (8 damage).

From the southeast, near the far bank, the group sees more movement, and also to the northwest, closest Lamsi. Both appear to be moving into the muddy channel.

Pausing to let Damelon revise his move, if he wishes to.

Erik, Round 1:

Erik calms down enough to try to pull his leg out of the croc's mouth (Acro +2 vs FORT). Whether or not that succeeds, Erik then channels his Dragonfrost spell through his finger (Reaper's Touch feat, Dragonfrost gains melee range) and almost blows his fingernail off instead of getting the croc.

Erik, a BIT unnerved by the giant reptilian monster attached to his lower appendage, attempts to blast it with a bit of arcane energies. The words just squeak out, however (6 vs FOR: miss), and he only succeeds in lowering the temperature within a foot of him by a degree or two. He does feel a bit tougher, though... (+1 to AC until EoNT Erik). He wriggles mightily, but worries a bit too much about wrecking his good boots (Acro 7 vs REF: fail).

Sigurd, howling bloody murder and frustration at not being able to find a rope in a forest full of vines, slides/runs down the embankment and engages Crocodile 3, which has Erik gripped. Crashing silently facepalms. Swinging his weapon around in a wild arc, Sigurd only manages to disturb the now slightly colder air near Erik (11 vs AC: miss).

Crocodile 1, angered by the newcomer, and wanting a piece of human to his-ornery-self, moves to intercept Sigurd. It attempts to grab him (21 vs AC: hit) and clamps on to the big mans forearm, not getting good purchase (5 damage) but still managing to get enough of him to halt his movement (grabbed).

Remember we always want to concentrate fire on as few enemies as possible. I am not writing this in response to Togar specifically. Just making a general reminder.

Togar is the only one who can mark and he has to attack something to mark it. He can only mark one mob per round with his at-wills. Most of us should be following his lead as to which mob to attack. This tactic is obviously not applicable easily in this case, though.

Erik wants the mobs close together, but that should happen naturally.

Anyone adjacent to Crashing's pet gets benefits. We should position ourselves so that Crashing's pet will be adjacent to as many of us as possible.

Damelon and Sigurd will move around the battlefield to give maxmimum damage to enemies Togar has pinned down.

KT snipes and buffs/de-buffs.

Erik wants the mobs bunched together.
Actually, I only have 1 burst spell and it's an encounter power. I just need them reasonably close together as my "main" spell - Chaos Bolt - allows me to make a secondary attack on an enemy 5 spaces from the previous target if I roll an even number.

Togar slips and slides down the bank to confront Croc 4. The muddy ground is slick underfoot, however, and his whirling axe only glances off the tough skin of the croc (13 vs AC: miss) doing minimal damage (4 damage) but still angering the reptilian (marked).

Crashing takes a brief moment to harken back to when he was but a wee ankle-biter. Ah... ankles were good, weren't they? Good ole ankle soup... Anyway, he remembers what his great-grandaddy told him about salt-water crocodiles... that they were big, ornery (high FOR), strong (bit hard) and their skin was very tough (high AC). They are, he recalls, as simple as a bag of anklebones (low WIL) and while capable of bursts of speed to attack, aren't capable of dodging a falling mango (low REF).

Always keen to turn theory into practice, the shaman mumbles a few words and his own spectral reptile appears on the battlefield. Then, after a bit more mumbo-jumbo, the semi-transparent companion strikes at Crocodile 1 (20 vs REF: hit) and the croc grumbles in pain (8 damage), but does not let go of Sigurd. (+1 AC to Erik and Darganti)

I think we skipped KT...

Erik, jibbering in fear (heh, sorry) frantically flails his arms and legs. The latter slips from Crocodile 3's grasp (Escape: successful, move), but the croc tears the hem of Erik's robe. Erik attempts to capitalize on his luck by turning and making a break for it across the brackish water.

Crocodile 3, sensing an opporitunity (yeah, one of those) lunges and snaps the heels of the the hapless caster (27 vs AC: hit) gashing his hamstring (5 damage). Erik still manages to run/swim/flail his way across the channel, driven by the wailing of a Banshee, he thinks...

The last word is the sorcerer's, though, and as he emerges from the waist-deep water, he turns and (burning an AP) fires a bolt of dark energy at the croc. It misses (9 vs WIL) however. So I guess the croc gets the last word...

KT, from the safety of the bank, utters encouraging words to Erik (minor) bringing the caster back from the brink, somewhat (6+5=11). Then he attacks Croc 4, near Togar and hits! Sigurd roars at Crocodile 3, which has just let go of Erik. He unleashes a devastating strike! Many air molecules are devastated and must pack up their meager belongings on tiny carts and move to another country. Round 3

Crocodile 4 rises from the murk and snaps at Togar! (17 vs AC: hit) The reptile gets a firm hold on the fighter, holding him fast (11 damage, grabbed)

Damelon slides over and attempts to strike at the croc holding Darganti (15 vs AC: miss) but misses.

Crocodile 2 (sorry missed you little buddy, dropping you to after Damelon so as to avoid making him re-do) whirls and attempts to latch onto Damelon and succeeds! (26 vs AC: hit) The leviathan chomps the rogues wrist (damage: 11, Damelon is grabbed).

Lamsi shoots again, her shot striking Crocodile 2 (24 vs AC: hit) who's got the good start on an arrow-mohawk now. (7 damage)

Erik fires another dark bolt of energy at one of the crocodiles (he doesn't specify which, but it doesn't matter) and it whizzes off into the forest (7 vs WIL: miss)

KT sings a sweet song to Darganti. While the muscular tribesman seems a bit annoyed and resentful, he nonetheless can't refuse to admit that he feels a bit better (heal: 15+6=21). KT taunts crocodile 2 again and this time, it looks... miffed (16 vs WIL: hit, damage: 7, -2 ATK until EoNT KT) Croc 2 is bloodied.

Sigurd moves north and swings (1: miss) and hears millions of tiny death screams.

Togar takes a shot at the croc next to him (19 vs AC: hit, 13 damage) and attempts to wriggle free (22 vs FOR: success, Togar can shift 1).

Darganti tries to mirror Togar's success with a similar Reaping Strike at Croc 4, but only just grazes it (13 vs AC: miss, 4 damage).

The warrior isn't sure what Damelon is referring to, but with the help of some gesturing and Lamsi translating roughly, the islanders communicate to the group that the hides, while useful, would take too long to strip, given the circumstances. Lamsi does break a few teeth out of the crocs though, possibly to take back to Mokdi.

After another hour of walking / skulking, Darganti beckons back that all should start being "more quiet" as you are drawing close to the Eater encampment. About 10 minutes of cautious creeping later, Crashing (via PP) hears the sound of voices in the distance, down the path.

Darganti frowns. Lamsi manages to communicate that the warrior thinks they should not be to the outpost YET...

Lamsi starts forward, crouching. Darganti grabs her arm again and pulls her back, shaking his head vigourously. Lamsi is furious, but remains quiet, not wanting to risk making noise. There will be words later, of this you are sure.

Damelon creeps up the path, staying in the foliage at it's edge. He moves away from the party, up and around a couple of bends in the roadway. As he rounds one, he sees several humanoids sitting at the jungle edge, ahead. He sees two men and two women; all are painted in a similar fashion to the group that attacked Lamsi earlier. It's hard to tell if this is the entirety of the group, however; Damelon dares not approach further (DM: unless he wants to do another stealth check).

They appear to be talking amongst themselves and preparing for something. The women are carefully inspecting what look like darts, aligning the feathers, and sticking them, tip-first into small gourds which they place in pouches that hang from their sides. The men Damelon sees have clubs at their sides, and one is carrying a spear as well.

None of them appear to notice the sneaky rogue.
