The entire party moves down the path, staying close to the sides so as to avoid being easily seen. Before they know it, they're several hundred yards from the source of the smoke columns. They halt at a place where the path bends from north-to-south to east-to-west. Even Darganti and Lamsi see and hear no signs of human movement.
Do all of you go around the corner?

No way. Time for Mr Recon. The party will split into the jungle in case some hunters happen by.
Damelon will cut the corner through the jungle and see what he can see.

Damelon sneaks around the corner, careful to stay in the cover of the foliage (Stealth 25: success). Peering west, he sees a crude wall of lashed-together bamboo, about 10' coming out of the jungle on either side of the path. There is no gate on the compound, and through the opening he can see several Eater's, going about their daily business, with only a pair of guards posted inside the gate. Both appear bored. Through the gate, Damelon can see several huts, and a few canoes pulled up on the beach which lay beyond them.

Damelon is going to continue around the wall to the south, keeping at least 3 squares between him and the wall. He wants to get a look at the beach north and south. It might be better to have one or two of us come from that side while the noisy ones attack from the front.
Sneak +8 = 10, I hope there is no one around!

6th October 2009, 08:46 AM
Damelon swings around to the south, skirting the bamboo wall that runs all the way from the path edge to the edge of the beach. He arrives at the edge of the jungle and sees clearly that the compound is open on the ocean side, and several long canoes are pulled up here on the sand. Several yards away, he sees an Eater tending one of these canoes, hunched over and fiddling with something inside the bow. As Damelon cranes his neck to get a better look, he shifts his position and something squeals underfoot. A very miffed lizard scurries away.
Damelon looks back up to see the islander's head snap around in his general direction. The Eater leans left and right to try to peer into the forest and moves a little closer.

Damelon, noting the approaching islander, does his best to remain quiet as he moves East, deeper into the jungle. The islander reaches the forest edge and looks around, an adze in hand. He listens for a few moments and then, curiosity satisfied, turns to go back to his work.
At that moment, a coconut falls off of a nearby tree and in it's hasty pursuit of terra firma, manages to clang against Damelon's weapon on the way down. The distinctly "un-jungley" sound causes the cannibal to whirl around stalk into the forest, slowly and cautiously. He moves VERY close to Damelon, but does not appear to see him. Yet.

Round 1 (Surprise):
Uncomfortable with how close this cannibal is coming to his hiding spot, Damelon springs into action lashing out from the shadows! Just as the rogue lunges, the Eater bends over to pick up and examine the aforementioned coconut and Damelon's attack whiffs by where his head WOULD have been had he remained standing (ATK: 1, auto-miss). The oblivious eater stands back up to see Damelon standing next to him, grinning sheepishly, and proceeds to wig the heck out.
Round 2:
Alarmed, the villager swings at Damelon and due to being fairly surprised, (14 vs AC: miss) just barely misses. He shouts something unintelligible and turns to run back towards the shelter of the enclosure.
Damelon, take an OA and take your turn (after I resolve the OA, feel free to edit). Others: You don't know what's going on, so you haven't entered the encounter yet. I'll assume you'll be still waiting for Damelon, but heard one of the villagers shout. You may make insight rolls to see if you can piece together what happened. Good luck with that.

How many lbs of gear are you carrying, Damelon? I think your magic number for totally unencumbered movement is 170lbs for you (STR 17 x 10), including the cannibal you just picked up. Since I didn't pick a mass for him... let's settle this with a roll...
1-5: 140lb cannibal (he's slight)
6-10: 150lb cannibal (he's trim)
11-15: 160lb cannibal (he's about average)
16-20: 170lb cannibal (he should start sticking to leaner cuts of human)
Result: He weighs 170lbs. Check the PHB for limitations on encumbered movement. (Reads) Since it seems to be house-ruley... how about this? Give me a STR roll vs DC 15. If you make it, you can do the double move. If not, single move with cannibal-body, double-move without it.

STR check +3 vs DC15 = 14, so single move to J17 with the body.
Are the roofs of the huts visible above the walls? To put it another way, should one climb a wall portion close to a roof, is it conceivable to jump to the roof, K14 > J13 specifically?

Are the roofs of the huts visible above the walls? You're too close to the wall to see them right now, but when you peeked through the gate and around the corner, they looked about level (the roofs of the huts and the top of the wall). The wall is of bamboo lashed together, it has very little actual "width" on the top, but you COULD climb it and jump from it, with a good acrobatics attempt.

Round 2 (continued):
As the islander yells and turns to run back towards the enclosure, Damelon finally connects (ATK 18 vs AC: hit) and connects well (DAM: 7, dead) and the hapless cannibal worker sinks to the ground with a gurgle.
Thinking quickly, Damelon grabs the fresh body by the feet and drags it east. The cannibal must be one of the pudgier ones, however, and the rogue doesn't get as far as he'd like. Behind him, he hears a few yells of surprise, and what he suspects are the hurried footsteps of other islanders coming to investigate (see map).
Party: I need more insight rolls, people.

It's actually 28, because:
OOC: Lamsi uses her "Crucial Advice (standard: utility)" and Crashing rerolls his insight at +2.
Crashing has an epiphany. He actually starts to think he may have personally cracked the syntax of Lamsi's language! (Future conversations, at least between Darganti/Lamsi/Crashing will be easier). He motions Lamsi to start again, but in her native tongue. Surprised, she obliges.

4 mp to move to K15 (difficult terrain)
4 mp to climb (10'/5'=2*2=4)
You only have 6mp, IIRC.
Climbing the wall would be an athletics check. Which I'd only undertake after you've done a perception check on the wall itself, as you correctly suggested.
Suggestion: You could do it from K16 (2mp), diagonally, which would put you on the wall at J15 (if you make it).

The bolt is perfectly aimed, however and strikes the fleeing islander in the back of the head (19 vs WIL: hit). The Eater stops yelling abruptly and falls dead.
Underling 2, hearing the commotion behind him, whirls and sees two of his comrades quickly die. He reverses course and ducks into one of the huts.
Clubber 1, focused, continues into the woods and sees a blood trail...
Crashing...
Lamsi sees Sigurd gibbering at her and looks back to Crashing, confused.

Darter 1 moves up between the huts and peers around the corner at the commotion. Spying Crashing at the gate, she draws up her blowgun and fires (ATK 11 vs AC: miss) and the dart embeds itself in the bamboo next to Crashing's head. She yells in frustration.

From the same hut boil two more angry looking islanders, obviously upset that you've awoken them from their afternoon nap. One manages to be awake enough to run at Togar and swings his club (9 vs AC: miss) but fails to connect, in his grogginess.
You hear more angry yelling from one of the northern huts as well, and a swarthy warrior wielding a very large greatclub emerges from each one of them. They rush at KT, the nearest target. Both swing in near perfect unison, and while the wily bard manages to avoid one strike (16-2 vs AC: miss), the other strikes (18-2 vs AC: hit) and strikes hard (DAM: 11).

His second swing, a titanic cleave, clips one of the fallen guardians (19 vs AC-2 on G1: hit, DAM: 13 and 9 vs AC-2 on G2: miss) bloodying him. Sigurd feels slightly refreshed by that workout (+4 THP).

From one of the farthest huts comes the sound of low chanting and a bent figure shambles into view, accompanied by two others.
The figure raises an arm and points it at the party. Suddenly, a dark cloud rises from the wet earth. (Centered on N9). Damelon (21 vs FOR: hit, DAM: 7), Crashing (23 vs FOR: hit, DAM: 7), Darganti (26 vs FOR: hit, DAM: 7), KT (16 vs FOR: hit, DAM: 7) are all hit and feel confused. (Dazed until EoNT)

Guardian 2 stands as well and strikes out at Crashing and connects with the coughing shaman (ATK 20 vs AC: hit, DAM: 5), also sending him reeling backwards.

this is a good question.
He disappears when I fall unconscious.
So from a timeline standpoint, how does this work?
if I am standing next to a monster and cast a spell, does the monster get to OA me before that spell lands?
if so, then PG gets an OA on the chanter, after which he immediately disappears.
This is kind of important as it will grant one ally within five squares of him 4 hitpoints.

Clubber 1 whirls and attacks Darganti (9 vs AC: miss) but the wary warrior deftly deflects the blow with the haft of his spear.
Crashing bleeds a bit, but his condition thankfully does not deteriorate (Save 16).
Darter 1 steps back from Sigurd and fires her blowgun at him (18 vs AC: hit, DAM: 5). Sigurd is near death's door and dazed. Damelon is no longer dazed.
Darganti does not like the look of this fray. He attacks the clubber adjacent to him and executes a successful Reaping Strike (19 vs AC: hit, DAM: 8). Clubber 1 is badly wounded. Darganti retreats east to stand adjacent to Crashing's body.
The cannibal chanter laughs insanely at Damelon and points. He appears to appreciate the fact that Damelon is pre-roasting himself on the old embers.

Looks like Crashing can't heal anyone else, so..
Togar again gets Majestic Word - 2nd use, no more heals.
And then I'll use my daily
- Stirring Shout; +4 vs WIL, 2d6+4 psychic dmg, Range 10, Until end of encounter whenever an ally hits the target they regain 4 hp.
I will put it on Clubber 2, however, not 4, because there are 3 badly wounded guys next to him who can hopefully get a little health back immediately from it.
OH!
Dang I missed this - KT has Improved Majestic Word - Togar should have gained 4 THP when I healed him last round. Din if you allow it, Togar never passed out, having 4 hps left. If not, then this time he gets surge + 4 + 4thp.
Also: Virtue of Cunning - When an enemy misses an ally
within 5 + Int mod squares, slide that ally 1 square as a free
action (1/rd).
An enemy missed Darganti just now - if Darganti is willing, I'll slide him one west, so he's flanking clubber 1.

OK, back at this finally. I doubt I can sort it all out, so I'll just kinda mash it together...
KT steps back and to the left and yells to Togar, "Buddy? I think you're OK..." and Togar opens his eyes. He only THOUGHT he was unconcious. Maybe he's getting tired? (Togar is at 4hp and prone, like he would have been last round). KT turns to the downed shaman and sings a soothing little ditty. Crashing feels alert (+6+4hp) but is still lying down. KT, really jamming now, attempts to encourage his party to attack Clubber 2, manages to forget the 2nd verse. He hums it, but that's not good enough (7 vs WIL: miss). Darganti takes the opportunity to move (slide) towards Clubber 1, flanking him.
Togar: Specify a Round 6 action as if you weren't unconcious when your turn went by.

Togar staggers to his feet and swings at a nearby clubman who stands between him and Darganti. His swing connects, and Clubber 1 drops to the ground (ATK: 19+2 vs AC, DAM: 14, Dead).
The Chanter, seeing his tribemate fall, takes a step north and merely looks at Togar... (ATK 18 vs WIL: hit, DAM: 9). Togar shrieks in terror and hits the ground. Again.
Clubber 4 swings at the nearby Crashing, hitting the Shaman who lies on the ground (ATK 17+2 vs AC: hit, DAM: 7). Crashing is near death's door again.
Clubber 5 brings his club down hard on the defensive but groggy Sigurd (ATK 19+2-2 vs AC: hit, DAM 12), dropping the Barbarian.

Round 7
Clubber 2, fearing that the tide may be turning again, (ATK 19-2+2: hit) attempts to hit the prone Damelon with his club, and succeeds. (DAM: 6) Damelon is badly wounded.

The attack part:
+4 vs fort against...well...every enemy on the map to some degree or another. The cover on this is going to be tricky to figure out. It's close burst 5 so I think in a lot of cases there isn't much cover.
Chanter:17 vs fort
Clubber4;14 vs fort
Clubber5:18 vs fort
darter: 14 vs fort
Clubber2: 16 vs fort
Some less than great rolls, but there you go.
damage:10
On a miss it is half damage
Healing Part
Everyone who is bloodied gets +2 regernation per round until the end of the encounter. That's not great. however, as a minor action you can dispell the effect and immediatly get 10 hit points, which is nice.
Minor Action: I'll dispell and take the ten.

Erik tries to keep his composure at seeing so much allied blood spilled.
He'll peak around the corner again and cast Chaos Bolt at the Chanter again.
Chanter:
Chaos Bolt: 18+4 = 22 vs WIL
Dmg: 1d10+6 = 3+6 = 9 dmg
Because I rolled an even number (and hit) I get to roll a secondary attack:
Secondary Target: One creature within 5 squares of the target last hit by this power
Secondary Attack: Charisma vs. Will
Hit: 1d6 psychic damage. If you rolled an even number for the secondary attack roll, repeat the secondary attack. You can attack a creature only once with a single use of this power.
So the bolt will rebound off of the Chanter and go for Darter 1:
Darter 1:
CB2: 12+4 = 16 vs WIL
Dmg: 1d6 = 4 psychic dmg
Rolled another even and, I'm guessing, hit. Secondary attack again, this time at Clubber 2:
Clubber 2:
CB3: 9+4 = 13 vs WIL
Dmg: 1d6 = 3 psychic dmg
Additionally, b/c I rolled an even number on my first attack roll Erik gets +1 AC until the end of my next turn.

Round 7 Continued:
Damelon scrambles to his feet and hastily stabs at Clubber 2 (ATK 10 vs AC: miss) but his thrust is wide.
Lamsi raising her bow to fire, hears Darganti yell at her and then changes her mind... she hesitates for a moment and then, seeing two of her party on the ground, streaks north up the path and out of sight.
Erik closes his eyes and fires a zigzagging bolt of power into the foray, which strikes the Chanter between the eyes, dropping him like a sack of mangoes (ATK 22 vs WIL: hit, DAM: 9, Dead) rebounds to Darter 1 (ATK 16 vs WIL: hit, DAM 4) and then ricochets towards Clubber 2 (ATK 13 vs WIL: miss), but just misses.
Crashing likewise creaks upright again and, waving his arms in the air, sends a tide of energy across the enclosure. Clubber 5 and Clubber 2 are hit (DAM: 10) but Darter 1 and Clubber 4 are missed (DAM: 5). Chanting makes a quick gesture, and feels much better. (+10hp) The Darter is reeling.
Not that it helps the end result, but I don't think my second wind got calculated into Sigurd's hps.Fixed. Still down, but not as negative.
Seeing her elder down, the Darter shrieks in anger and fires a dart at Damelon (ATK 17 vs AC: hit, DAM: 7) and it strikes him in the neck. Damelon feels all wonky-like again (dazed until EoNT Darter 1). He is also reeling and looks like a leaf could blow him over.
Curiously, Darganti does not engage the nearby clubber, but instead darts between the huts and heads towards where Crashing heard the noise. As he moves out of sight, you hear him yelling excitedly.
Sigurd lies on the ground, insensate (I need a save roll, Lycos).

Encouraged by his ability to step backwards, he attempts to follow that up with a dark curse on Clubber 4 but (ATK 10 vs FOR: miss) it is ineffective.
Darganti is still out of sight, but you hear yelling and clanging from the direction he went.
Sigurd lies on the ground, but his condition remains somewhat stable. (Save 18: Success)
Togar mimics Sigurd almost perfectly, except for the stable part. (Save 8: Fail #2)

Clubber 4 presses his attack on Crashing, moving closer to him and swinging (ATK 20 vs AC: hit, DAM: 8). Crashing finally does just that. Papa Gator winks out nearly as quickly as he appeared.

Erik:
Last ditch effort, Erik casts his Daily on Clubber 4 taking the OA.
I just realized that if I hit and roll a 2 for dmg type I'm in trouble. :lowlol:
Chromatic Orb: +4 vs REF
If it's a hit: Dmg: 3d10+4 = 17+4 = 21 dmg
If it's a mis: Dmg: 1d10 = 4 dmg
Dmg type = 2 (Of course): 2. Red: Fire damage, and each creature adjacent to the target takes fire damage equal to your Dexterity modifier (+2). So Erik takes 2 dmg. /sigh.
Chromatic Orb
Attack: Charisma vs. Reflex
Hit: 3d10 + Charisma modifier (+4) damage. Roll a d6 to determine the attack's damage type and effect.
1. Yellow: Radiant damage, and the target is dazed (save ends).
2. Red: Fire damage, and each creature adjacent to the target takes fire damage equal to your Dexterity modifier (+2).
3. Green: Poison damage, and ongoing 5 poison damage (save ends).
4. Turquoise: Lightning damage, and you slide the target a number of squares equal to your Dexterity modifier (+2).
5. Blue: Cold damage, and the target is immobilized (save ends).
6. Violet: Psychic damage, and the target takes a -2 penalty to AC (save ends).
Miss: 1d10 damage. Roll a d6 to determine the attack's damage type and effect, as above.
Implement, Staff: +4 attack, 3d10+6 damage

OOC: "Hey Erik - maybe we can strike a deal with the cannibals - let them have the rest of the party if they let us run away!"
TO DM: I am NOT REALLY going to say that!

I just realized a rolled an even number for my attack roll so, if he survives the OA, Erik gets +1 AC until end of his next turn.

Erik pulls out all the stops. The clubber stands transfixed as the funny man in the dress chants for a bit. A kaleidescope of energies pour from the caster and surround the clubber. After about 3 seconds of this, the colours dissipate and the clubber seems... strangely entertained. (ATK 14 vs REF: miss, DAM: 4) After a brief moment, there is a backblast of flame and Erik is singed (DMG: 2). While Erik contemplates this turn of events, the clubber "thanks" him for the light show by clobbering him with his club (ATK 21-1 vs AC: hit, DAM: 10). Erik drifts off into a dream about grass-skirt-wearing island beauties.
Sigurd's blood pools some more. (Death Save 6: Failure #2)
Question can the huts corner be cut? If so, shift SE, not S.No, the hut is square.
KT finds himself alone and hurting on the battlefield. Feeling dread and frustration, he steps back, musters up the last of his bardly indignation and moxy and utters a string of expletives and epithets that would make a sailor blush. The clubber looks like a BIT of it might have registered (ATK 11 vs WIL: miss) but it maybe only the emotion of the outburst made it through.
Clubber 5, just wanting the bard to SHUT UP ALREADY, steps forward and helps KT do just that (ATK 19 vs AC: hit, DAM: 9).
A deathly quiet settles over the battlefield.
