Following Lamsi, the party treks back towards the village. At the crocodile infested crossing, they pause to fell a tree, which makes for a stable bridge and an uneventful traverse. The party are dog-tired, and Lamsi is obviously affected by the loss of Togar and Darganti. They plod on however, and soon arrive back at the village.

A single warrior meets challenges them on the path with a whistle, which Lamsi provides the countersign to. He rushes forward to greet you, and then zips back into the village, yelling. A few sleepy villagers tumble from their huts, and you see Mokdi turn slowly from his seat near the central fire. He's a bit of a night-owl, it seems. His eyes widen in surprise and his face splits in a giant grin. He leaps to his feet and shuffles to meet you.

He greats you heartily, hugging you and slapping you on the shoulders and bowing respectfully. He quickly gathers up the village elders and speaks quickly with Lamsi for a few moments. She turns back to you.

"Mokdi would like hear story of battle." She says, slowly, mostly towards Crashing. "...But he understand we tired. We should sleep and then talk in morning. This good?"

It seems the villagers have been preparing one of the larger huts for you, and they lead you towards it. On the way, Lamsi discretely points out one of the privy huts.

Inside your "dormitory" you find that woven bamboo partitions have been erected, to give each of you some semblence of privacy. Lamsi shows you that each "room" has a large, down-filled sleeping pad, of sorts, suspended off the ground in a large hammock. Looks VERY comfy. There are water jars and bowls (for drinking and/or washing in the morning, you wager) and a curtain that closes off each "room" from the common area.

"It is late, but maybe you are hungry?" Lamsi asks. Without waiting for an answer, she sets a couple of large bowls of mixed fruit and nuts on the common-room table. "You will sleep well here." Dispite her still-bruised eye, she beams, proud of her people's hospitality and gesturing to the sleeping arrangement. "We will talk with Mokdi in the morning. People will be very happy for what you did!"

Anything else you want to talk to Lamsi about before you sleep?

The party sleeps soundly all night... and a bit of the next morning. Everybody rubs their eyes and hauls themselves out of their comfy hammock/beds and meets in the common area. They find that the fruit/nuts of the previous night have been refreshed, and some sort of beverage has been added, that is citrusy and pulpy. Yumm! After washing up a bit, they stick their heads out into the bright sunlight.

Just outside their hut waits Lamsi, who is crafting arrows with her back to the door. Hearing you emerge, she turns and smiles widely.

"You sleep well!" she says. "Have you eaten? Are you ready to meet with elders?"

Lamsi scampers ahead and calls Mokdi and the other elders together at the central meeting table. You arrive and seat yourselves. Someone serves a hot, sweet, chocolaty beverage that seems to have a hint of coconut and is vaguely fermented. Mmmm...

Through Lamsi and his own broken Common, Mokdi sets the groundwork.

"First, we are sad that you lost your fine warrior, Togar. He will be remembered by our people for his sacrifice, always. The Eater's are very dangerous foes... strong and fast and evil... we are also sad to lose one of our best fighters, Darganti. His mother, if she were still with us, would be very proud of his brave stand. Tonight we will feast in honour of both of them, and tell many stories."

"We see the smoke of a big fire this morning, too... Lamsi says you destroyed many Eaters, and their... camp. It was late, so I bid her go sleep... that I would talk to you in morning. She was very happy... excited by your success. So... tell me of your action? What happened?"

A bit of storytelling here is in order... I'd suggest KT relate this in his bardic style... not sure what skill might be used for this... diplo maybe? I'm doing this because I have a few ideas for a result.

Sigurd is emotionally upset by the loss of Togar and Darganti. He won't show it though. It's best to bottle it up for later use.

He will say, "Darganti was a great warrior, and if there were a way to track down his captors, we would do that. Perhaps, eventually, we can try and find him? Also, Lamsi was very important in our rescue. We owe our lives to Lamsi. Without her assistance, I'm certain that we would have befallen the fate of Togar."

If they want to hear of the details, we will tell them about the entire fight from the beginning to the end. We won't hold back any detail.

KT will use his words of friendship (+5 diplo) and his natural ability (+9).

"Modki and the elders of the tribe. I will tell you now of our adventures with the eaters who have plagued your peaceful village for too long.

We traveled the paths your people know, led by Lamsi and Dargenti, and came upon the encampment of the eaters. You know these men better than we do - you know there is no reasoning with them - and so you know it was inevitable that we would come to war with them.

We did. And we were out matched. We foolishly rushed in, allowed ourselves to be scattered, and were overpowered. Even while we killed their Shaman, we spent our strength too soon, and the remaining cannibals were able to crush us. In that overpowering, we lost Togar. We think we lost Dargenti as well, but we are not sure, but I will return to that later.

Truly we should be dead now - meat on the cannibals plates.

The Gods, however, intervened. They inspired Lamsi to flee to safety, knowing that we could not win. They whispered to the Cannibal's, and while they knew to store us separately, the gods made them leave some of us together, and weakend the ropes the cannibals used to bind us.

That is how we were able to escape. I and my friend (point to Damelon) were together, and freed each other. We looked outside, and saw Lamsi - truly the Gods must have guided her to be there at that time. The three of us surprised the cannibals, and took two of them out quickly. Meanwhile, Crashing and his spirit guide, the great Pap'Aga`tor, they were on the other side of the camp - and with us opposite each other the gods made the cannibals foolish - they split up, and so divided, were conquered, just as we had been.

One fled by canoe, but the Gods even blessed us then, and we were able to slay him as he tried to escape like the true coward he was.

In the search of the camp that followed, we found signs that Dargenti may be alive - his body was not found, and a canoe was missing. Blood led to the canoe.

We burned the village, and displayed their shaman in the worst possible way - he eats his own stomach for eternity in the hells of the Abyss.

Truly, elders, I believe the Gods guided Dargenti to flee as well, to avoid certain death, and tell us even now that we must seek him out and come to his aid, as he came to ours."

With that, bow and be seated.

Mokdi raises an eyebrow, very impressed (29 diplo) at KT's orating prowess. His mouth hangs open at various points, and many of the elders are on the edges of their seat as Lamsi's on-the-fly translation (which is getting quite good; clever girl!) has them transfixed, their ears on their ranger, but their eyes glued to KT, as he stands on his chair and gesticulates grandly, punctuating his story with vivid facial expressions. Lamsi can barely keep up.

As the bard finally sits, Mokdi stands, bows and then raises a glass of the coco-choco beverage towards each of you in turn. The rest of the elders do the same. He speaks a few words to Lamsi in their language, and she nods quickly and runs off.

"We thank you. Very much." Mokdi's eyes glisten with appreciation. "Wait... one moment."

Soon Lamsi returns bearing a very large sack. They converse quickly and quietly again. Lamsi places the sack in front of KT and returns to Mokdi's side.

Mokdi nods at her.

"You have helped our people stay safe for a long time. Eaters will be back some day, but they will be... careful. They will no longer be brave. You have scared them. They will fear you, and maybe us now. We can go for water... go fishing... build our big-rafts. The Eaters will not come long moons. Maybe long-sun... year?"

She speaks again briefly with Mokdi and then turns back to you again.

"We are not a wealthy people. The things we value are not what others value. We are happy with the sea... the wind... good food... good stories and music... and family. We not care for yellow irons or red or blue stones. But we know many do. The men who come in the tall rafts... with the white wings... bring their yellow iron and hide it in the rocks. Some they hide well. Some not well. We not need this yellow iron. But you like it, we know. What we have is yours. We hope you like it."

The sack sits before KT on the table. It is fairly large and bulky.

When the party informs Mokdi of their desire to investigate the shore where the "Tall Rafters" land, he nods.

"Mokdi's people not sure why others like the yellow iron so much, but they do, we understand. When we give you the yellow iron and the blue and red stones, we see the light in your eyes. It amuses us, but Mokdi knows that people are all the same, but people are all different, too. Different paddle strokes for different paddlers, I always say." He laughs.

"Alright. Now we show you the way..." he pulls out the map that you'd seen earlier.

"Here... is where the Tall Rafters go..." he says, pointing to the eastern shore (where you see "4" on the map). "It is long walk... two suns. Path only go part way. There are caves in that place where the rafters go... you will find them there. You will again need guide..."

"Yes!" Lamsi interjects. "I will guide you." She beams confidently.

Mokdi rolls his eyes. "You not tired of this one yet? She is make my neck sore at times."

As evening approaches, the village shifts into high gear. Out come big torches; giant piles of wood are gathered for the central fire, and musical instruments are tuned. The percussion section is particularly impressive. It seems like everyone in this village can play some sort of instrument.

Sigurd's mouth waters as he smells the scent of roast boar wafting up out of a pile of sand... the slow roasting is going to result in some pretty fantastic flavour! Crashing and Damelon chat with Mokdi a bit, passing the time and KT tries to teach a few of the village children some playful rhyming songs with surprising success while Erik looks on, laughing.

As darkness falls, the large central bonfire is lit and the singing, dancing and drumming begins. The boar is served and the fermented coconut/pineapple blend flows freely. You have never tasted such amazing fare before in your entire lives.

Mokdi stands and calls for silence at one point, and a hush falls over the crowd. He speaks, alternating between his rough common and the islander tongue. Crashing translates for the party when necessary.

"This is both a sad day, and a happy one, my people. These..." he gestures towards the party "'Warriors From Far' have helped us more than we have been able to help ourselves. They have conquered the Eater's, who will plague our shore no more... no more raids on our fish traps... no more fear for our children... no more taking our loved ones..." Erik sees Lamsi swallow hard, eyes misty. "...no more making us tremble and have poor sleep! The flames from their huts rose high last night, their warriors are defeated, their medicine man cut down! We will sleep well this night!"

The islanders cheer and smile at the party in appreciation.

Mokdi gestures again for quiet.

"But..." he begins again "this is also a sad time. For we have lost our brave warrior Darganti... the best of our fighters. He was strong like the silverback, fast like the jungle cat and fearless like the crocodile. He is gone... taken by the Eaters, like many of our tribe. Also..." he turns to the party, "is gone the brave warrior Togar, who charged into the Eater village without thought to his safety, his weapon cutting and hacking and slashing the Eaters who fell like wheat before him. Only after receiving many blows and wounds did mighty Togar fall. We raise the sound of our drums and voices in triumph this night, and in honour of these two fallen heroes for the sacrifice they made so we can be safe and free!"

"Again we thank the brave 'Warriors From Far' and hope they will enjoy themselves this night, for life is short and victory and good times far too fleeting!"

He bows in your direction and then raises a clay mug of beverage towards you, and then sinks it in one gulp. The music starts up again as the people cheer anew.

The group sits transfixed, watching an islander warrior fearlessly leaping around the fire, whirling a long cord with a flaming bit at each end. It looks reckless, but his moves are precise and calculated.

A few minutes later, the musicians rearrange themselves and a troop of female dancers, lead by Lamsi, surround the central fire and begin a slow, rhythmic dance of their own, their supple frames bending and turning like melted caramel. They wear strings of flowers in their hair, and there are similar floral streamers wrapped around their legs from ankle nearly to waist.

The tempo builds and the drumming complexity increases, the island women moving in time and faster in more intricate leaps and twirls; perfectly synchronized, fragrant flower petals flying all around. As the dance reaches it's climax, the party gasps as in perfect unison, flaming arrows fired from four different directions and bearing some sort of small container, streak between the women and explode against the central bonfire, causing it to erupt in a shower of red and blue flame and sparks. The women freeze in their final pose, chests heaving with the exertion of the dance.

The crowd goes absolutely WILD, cheering and whistling. Crashing notes that while Lamsi is still rigidly locked into her final dance flourish, her eyes are fixed on KT, like those of a panther on prey.

The troup breaks their formation and begins mingling with the crowd again. Crashing (you perceptive devil you) sees that Lamsi glances at KT a few more times, though her expression is more a mix of hope and mild confusion at this point. After a few minutes, even this passes and is lost in a lot of eating, drinking and good-time having. Crashing regales the village with some of the dances from his region, and he can see the islander villagers mentally taking notes, so to speak. Mokdi howls with laughter as one of the male dancers attempts to mimic Crashing's moves and falls flat on his behind.

One of the female dancers draws Damelon up and tries to demonstrate their form of pairs dancing to him and after a few false starts, he begins to get the footwork down, his roguish dexterity coming in handy. He and "Malinni" are laughing their heads off; the dancer doing her best to bridge the language gap. By the end of the evening, Damelon has a bit more of island vocabulary down pat.

The party lasts long into the night. Between the pina colada's and the rich food, you aren't entirely sure when you went to bed, but somehow you made it there.

At some point Crashing will take Lamsi aside.

He'll explain to her that we (the heros from afar, or whatever) are all relative strangers to one another but that he is pretty sure KT isn't really interested in women, as surprising as that may be for a guy with a girl's name. KT just devotes all of his energy towards his art and that I would appreciate it if she, as an obvious leader of the tribe, would warn any of the women in camp who she thinks might be having feelings towards KT that, unfortunately, he is a dead end in the love department.

Crashing will shake his head in a "can you be believe it, how tragic" sort of way.

Lamsi seems a bit confused at first, as she listens to Crashing's explanation. The concept of "career before relationships" isn't exactly an issue that has ever come up in her village. She is open minded, though, and after a bit, nods slowly as Crashing talks. She seems a bit embarassed, wringing her hands subconsciously, but tells Crashing that she understands and will tactfully pass the word on. She returns to the party and continues to participate even though with slightly less enthusiasm.

Lamsi is going to be a lot more confused when KT gets up and starts dancing with the other native women. He just won't make eye contact with Lamsi. KT gets up and begins cavorting with some of the others of the dance troupe, singing silly shanty's that he's known for years. They seem enthralled and try to sing along to the chorus when it comes around, even though they don't know what it means.

Lamsi, sitting nearby next to Mokdi, glances at KT and then quickly diverts her eyes to Crashing's and her eyebrows raise a little. She then shrugs and smiles weakly at him, as if to say, "oh well..." and whispers something in Mokdi's ear. She gives him a little hug, stands and stretches, sleepily. She then turns and retreats into one of the huts, pulling the floral streamers from her hair as she walks.

Ok. Sigurd tries to play nice in removing the arms of the woman attached to me saying "Nyub Nyub" all the time. While smiling, he begins to peel her off of him.
Sigurd looks a bit flustered, the button-nosed islander girl is practically cuddling him. He clears his throat nervously and (Diplomacy 4) tries to extricate himself gently. "Uh... Nyub nyub?" he says, haltingly. The girl's eyes go large and she grins widely. Sigurd's words seem at odds with his actions, and so she doesn't back off. Does Damelon need to make and Endurance check against blue balls?

I think we are good.

"Ooooh!" Sigurd hears. Then a bit of tongue clucking. He feels someone try to tug on his shoulders, to lift him back to his perch. He looks up to see a wizened old islander lady hovering over him, smiling a toothless grin. She grunts with the effort but can barely budge him.

So helpful, these folks.

Damn! I'm going to bed. With the ewoks and the old bitty's, my karma is crap tonight.

*Sigurd will get up on his own power, signal that he's ok, and meander over to the hut, and sleep off his buzz.* :lowlol:

OK, Damelon and Sigurd are down. Anyone else with anything else to say before nighty-nights? Crashing? Feel like chatting up Mokdi?

Erik, in the odd position that his stunning looks were of no interest to the island girls, will finish his drink and head to bed alone.

KT will keep singing and dancing for a while before going to bed, but he's not going to single anyone out - just have fun and try to forget the fallen.

As the thought enters Erik's head he grows confused. "I've never had to work to get a lady before.... Is this what being ugly is like??"

As Erik walks back to his hut, he sees a trio of teenage island girls standing in a small knot near the edge of the crowd. When they notice him noticing them, they huddle and giggle. They don't know what to make of the medicine-man-that-isn't-really-a-medicine-man.

Yeah, I'd like to talk to Mokdi about his people's belief system.
Crashing walks over to where Mokdi sits, and plops down next to him.

Over the next fifteen minutes or so, they discuss the various details of their particular animist-oriented take on life and the universe. Crashing finds that the islanders adhere to a fairly open and straight-forward set of beliefs... not a lot of pomp and ceremony, just simple living in relative harmony with their surroundings. They have no large-scale aspirations for their culture, and are content to live quietly, simply and honestly. They regard lying and duplicitousness as particularly evil. "We must have but one face." as Modki put it.

"I see you have learned our language quickly, Krashi." Mokdi says. "You are a credit to your kind. It has been many long suns since we have had outside visitors, long before Mokdi was born. Lamsi says you are very clever and your friends very resourceful. She was surprised that Dameelon and Kati were so quickly able to free themselves." Then, laughing... "She does not know what to make of the other man who is like you but not..." he says, pointing discretely to the retreating Erik. "He seems able to make fire and darkness fly from his fingers, in a way different from the Eater shamans. Lamsi almost laughs when she talks about seeing him in the Eater boat. He looked very sad and helpless. You have very much made Lamsi happy, I have not seen her this way in a long time."

Mokdi smiles at Crashing.

"She is happy to have met your group, she says" he continues. "She would be dead if it were not for you. She was very afraid when she met you... you looked like an Eater, but not... and your friend Kati... his voice she found soothing and she saw no lies in him. I saw her look at him earlier, but he seems not to be happy with her for some reason... Lamsi will be better, even tomorrow. Her pride may hurt now, but it will heal."

He breathes deeply and looks at the sky.

"Do not think her foolish or insincere. Lamsi has had a hard life. Her parents died when she was a small girl. The whole village adopted her, you could say... my wife and I tried to give her the things her parents would have. She grew up beaufitul and smart, as you can see. My son Paldi thought so. They were to be married but..." his voice catches a bit, "Paldi... was taken. So Lamsi has lost much... sometimes I think that is why she ventures so far on the island. Always looking, that one... always going... Nobody wants to leave this island like Lamsi does. I think she believes her destiny to be somewhere else. Across the sea maybe."

"So Krashi..." Mokdi changes the subject. "Once you have yellow iron, what will you do? You will be happy? Why is the yellow iron so important to many?"

Asharad

"Lamsi, she be a huge help to us. Not for her, maybe all of us be missing and not jus' some. She can travel wit' me anytime, she fiercer than her frame be showin'. I hope she not too torn up about dat boy. I'm not sure that women be what he's interested in, if ya catch mah meanin'.

As for da yellow iron. It does have its uses. Get's you tings in the wide-world. But mah village was much like dis one here. I know how it is, you raised to value what keeps you from starvin'. Makes livin for tha yellow iron seem silly."

After we chat for a bit I'll go to bed as well.

KT is having too fantastic of a time prancing around the fire to hear what Crashing and Mokdi are saying, and he misses the wide-eyed look of awed understanding that suddenly registers on the old man's face.

Besides, it isn't anything you should be ashamed of. The old man and I aren't judging you.

Eventually, the whole party retires for the night and sleeps off their fruit-booze induced haze.
