View Full Version : Part 16 - Chamber of Statues

Rend tentatively tries the door. It opens with no resistance and only a short, quiet squeak. This door is well used and maintained.

Cilene's light illuminates the 30-foot-high room which looks vaguely like a memorial. To the west, a 20-foot-tall statue of a warrior in plate armor stands atop a raised dais and holds an outstretched sword. In the corners of the eastern wall sit two statues of crouching dragons. To the south, an entryway leads to a set of double doors. In the entryway stand four more statues of small, cherubic figures holding vases above their heads. Aside from Cilene's light, the room is completely dark.

Rend notices (PP: 20) that the dust around the statue seems slightly disturbed.

Middle block of columns is the 20' statue. East blocks are the crouching dragons. Bottom 4 are the small, cherubic figures.

Statues! Very dangerous! *nudge Rend* You go first!

(History 15)

EricStratton
14th April 2010, 03:43 PM
Greebo vaguely recognizes the statue in the middle of the room from his textbooks as Kvothe the Bloodless, a Nerath legionnaire that helped lead the fight against the flood of undead Orcus unleashed from the Shadowfell originally.

The dragons and cherubs are just that. Perhaps a tribute to one of Kvothe's other names - Dragon's Tail - or to his believed ascension as a minor deity upon his death.

Shiz

Rend will move to B4 and then proceed south as far as the light reaches.

Sagar

Oooo, spelunking.

I don't mind recasting light - but I suggest we find another stick and alternate the two so we've always got a couple mins overlap. Losing light mid fight seems... unwise.

Shiz
14th April 2010, 10:20 PM
You cannot alternate. When you cast it, the old one goes out.

EricStratton

Rend hugs the wall and creeps down to the edge of the light (B7).

Light only extends 4 squares. Yes, that means technically you couldn't have seen the dragon statues or cherub statues. I took some liberties with that. Let's just say you can't see them anymore.

Sagar

This is rediculous.

Sagar will crack a sunrod then tuck it into his belt to keep both hands free.

"We need light, people. If anything is there, it can see us but we can't see it."

Shiz
16th April 2010, 09:12 AM
Sun rod is 20 square radius?

In the new light, Rend leads the group in single file along the wall to G15.

Guys, I don't see any reason to go near the big statue or the dragon statues right now.

EricStratton
16th April 2010, 11:44 AM
Sagar, tired of the slow pace and fearful of watching eyes, pulls out a sunrod and activates it. With the room now bathed in light, the group make their way single file down and around the edge of the room. Rend stops just behind the first cherubic statue.

EricStratton

Blug slips out of Greebo's pocket and disappears around the corner. He's gone for a moment and reports back to Greebo.

The statues are disgustingly cute, master, and the water in the vases is tastes stagnant. But nothing happened when I smacked them around.

Assuming Greebo does not share a dire warning with the group, Rend will try and move the closest urn from around the corner.

Send blug to investigate the smaller statues.

Can we get Cilene to check these all for traps?

Hmm. I had assumed that's what you did here.

http://www.legendsofwestwood.org/forum/showpost.php?p=276462&postcount=22

If not, then my response to that is the correct response to investigating the smaller statues. Here's the response when investigating the other statues in the room (dragons and likeness of Kvothe):

Blug lands on the head of Kvothe the Bloodless. Jumps up and down a few time, moves to the sword and does the same. Then shrugs his little shoulders, and moves to the dragons. He peers into their mouthes, gives the wings a good shake, and heads back to you.

"The stone man's sword is sharp. And those want-to-be demons' mouths are dark and deep."

Greebo
19th April 2010, 02:36 PM
I was trying to get blug to trigger any traps that might exist by blundering around, so no it wasn't trap detection in the usual skillful way.

"Hmm. Blug tells me that the sword over there is sharp and the "demons" have mouths that seem too real.

Perhaps we should destroy these for good measure?"

Shiz
19th April 2010, 03:23 PM
If you want to walk up to them, go right ahead...That sword looks like it could hit more than half the room if it spun around.

EricStratton
20th April 2010, 04:41 PM
Suddenly Rend's ears twitch, a trait from his wolf form he can't seem to shake.

"Someone's coming!"

The southern door opens suddenly. Two hobgoblins amble in having a relaxed conversation in their native tongue. They are as startled to see Rend as he is to see them.

Cilene casts a Magic Missile at the soldier which (19 vs REF) is too fast for him to avoid opening a nasty head wound (21+7=28 dmg, bloodied).

Hobgoblin Soldier 2 charges Rend (25 vs 17 AC) easily thwacking him in his hind quarters (34-10=24 HP).

Rend yelps at the spiked ball stuck in his ass. Now that he's closer to the status of Kvothe, and with pain focusing him and widening his eyes he notices three things in rapid succession. The first is the statue is articulated. Second he notices a well-hidden access panel on the statues dias. The third, and most frightening, thing is the statue has begun to move.

Suddenly the doors to the north crash shut, followed by the sound of large, heavy bolts sliding into place.

The statue swings its sword in a near perfect 15' circle around itself. Rend and Mazirith, both in range, are able to get their respective weapons up to block the large blade (13, 19 vs AC).

It stops where it originally started at. You're not sure if it's going to start swinging again.

The sword is specifically aiming at individual characters. You'd have as much chance of ducking under it as ducking under the hobgoblin's flail.

Can we push the goblin into the vase area? I expect that all the traps - I suspect more than one - were not activated until the doors to the north closed on us. What the hell are water-filled vases doing in here? Also, assume the dragon statutes breathe fire for now. That seems like a logical trap mechanic for dragon statues.

Sagar moves (to J15, I assume you meant) to attack the hobgoblin. His Righteous Brand isn't as righteous as it usually is and the hobgoblin side steps it with ease (12 vs AC). With the soldier distracted he takes a second to look at the cherubic statues. He sees arcane symbols on them, and notices the vases they hold appear to be filled with water.

Greebo continues to focus on the warrior statue. His shot isn't a very good one but against a stone statue it doesn't have to be (14 vs REF = hit) and some amount of stone is chipped off it's leg (dmg?). He then moves down the wall hiding in the shadows (E15).

Jagged, Maz, Rend, Cilene...

Maz stabs and Rend drops a Chill Wind.

Maz marks the soldier (minor, Aegis of Shielding) and lays a Luring Strike.

Swordmage at-will 1: Luring Strike (Melee, +9 vs AC, d8+1 dmg, Shift 1 sqr, slide trg 1 sqr into space you left, before or after attk shift 1 sqr)
17 vs AC, 3dmg

Rend transforms to normal (minor), marks the soldier as quarry (minor and only if I haven't used it this fight) and tries to blow him back between the urns.

Chill Wind (Harvest Totem),Area Burst 1 within 10, +7 vs FOR, d6+1, hit: you slide the target one square.
21 vs FOR, 11dmg, slide to J17

DO NOT CHASE the soldier until we see if some trap is triggered.

Round 3 start:

FYI, the soldier was already marked and quarried.

Mazirith attempts to maneuver the soldier around the room but his swing is off and it misses (17 vs AC).

Rend transforms back into a biped and, with a swirling wind conjured from his fingertips, blows the hobgoblin back 5 feet while giving him nasty freezer burn (7+11=18 dmg). Rend glaces at the surrounding statues expectantly but nothing happens.

Round 2 flashback:

Jagged snaps out his daydreaming, backs up a few squares and then charges Hobgoblin Soldier 2 (to J16) with a deadly (23 vs AC) Howling Strike that catches the hobgoblin in the ribs breaking at least two and opening a gaping wound (18+13=31 dmg, bloodied).

Jagged takes a moment to revel in the carnage when suddenly two shimmering walls appear - one behind him sealing the hallway, one blocking the southern door. He turns and slams his fists against the wall to no effect.

The wall is along the border between rows 15 and 16 spanning the 4 squares of the hallway.

Back to Round 3:

Cilene, now under new management, casts Magic Missile on the statue. Being a huge stone statue, it really has no place to move to and the terrible shot does find its target (8 vs REF = hit) blasting another big block of rock from the statue. It leans precariously to the side now.

The hobgoblin soldier looks nervously at the two new walls trapping him in with the enraged barbarian. Turning his attention back to the large stinky threat before him, he swings at Jagged but (15-2 (marked) vs AC) misses.

The statue stands statuesque.

The wall extends the length and height of the hallway sealing it in tightly. But he also discovers a weakness in the wall they might be able to exploit to bring the wall down (24 > hard DC).

Sagar, having discovered that there is a weakness in the wall, begins putting his mental energies into prying it open. He probes the incantation that created the wall and feels the mistake that produced the weakness. He gives a mental shove and causes the imperfection to grow (21 = Success #1).

Behind the wall, the cherub statues come to life tipping their jugs over. Water starts to flow, and quickly, from the containers into the room. The arcane walls hold and the deluge is confined to the small area. Within seconds the water is up to Jagged's knees.

Greebo gives Cilene a couple tips on magical walls his grandmother taught him (assist successful).

After a quick breather he inspects the cherub statues and their vases. Visually there is still a small amount of water dripping out of the containers but there's sign of where the water was coming from. Nor does he find anything in the hallway besides the statues, vases, and water.

Arcanically he does detect some residual magic coming specifically from the vases in the short hallway but even as he stands there he can feel it dissipating. There's still a fairly significant amount of magic radiating from the dragon statues in the corners, though.

Rend shakes the hobgoblins down. He finds some trinkets and trash in their pockets but no significant treasure. From a magical standpoint Cilene comes to the same conclusion with regards to their belongings.

As with anything the closer you get the more you'll see. You tell me where you are and what you're looking for and I'll tell you, with the roll you've rolled and Cilene's help, if you see anything.

Greebo, can you check the big statue in the middle to see if it was actively protecting anything like a hidden panel full of fat loots?
My pleasure.

Greebo investigates the statue trap closely and also detects magic on it.

+2 percep = 6 - I FOUND A ROCK!!!
+5 arcana = 21. I am in tune with the powers of the universe.

Sagar and Cilene are trying to sense the magic in the statues - what it does and how it works. Sagar will approach along the south wall. Cilene will approach but 3 squares up from the south wall. We will move all the way to the east wall or to the statue, whichever comes first. If we sense rising power, we'll back up and try to avoid a blast.

Rend is seriously confused as to what you guys hope to achieve.

I THINK they are a trap of some sort. I expect fire to shoot out.

But the placement seems odd. Usually, a trap protects something. What, on that blank wall, is there to protect? Is the hall just misdirection and the real way forward is hidden on this wall?

Another possibility is the statues are protecting something.. like treasure, maybe.
Or they are supposed to look like a trap and are containing magic.

Greedy dwarves want to know...

Greebo does indeed find many rocks but little else. Magically, he finds the statue no longer contains any of it.

Before Sagar can even make it to the southern wall (you're at K15) he senses (30+2 vs DC) a very strong surge of arcane energy and realizes this particular type of magic allows the dragon statues to breathe blasts of forceful fire. He so finely senses the magic he's able to trace a line that goes north from where he's standing and announces that crossing the line will trigger the statues.

Cross into the L row and the firing begins.

Aside from the statues he senses nothing magical about or past the wall.

Can we move to the south doors now?

Yes, we can move to the south doors now. You've been very patient. *hands Rend a cookie* :rotflmao:

For formation, Maz and Sagar should be in front considering rend expects undead. Rend and Jagged in rank 2.

I'm good with that - the south doors and the being in front.

And I want a cookie too.

Cilene says, "Ok, you were very patient too."

*hands Sagar a cookie too*

*she smacks his greedy dwarf hand as he tries to go for a second cookie*
