New Thread.. the other one was getting long...

Surprise Round:

Only Trask's passive perception beat the Kobold horde stealth roll so only the horde and Trask get to take action:

Trask goes first then the horde.

Shiz

Is the horde actually only medium sized as per the map? Individual kobolds are small, not tiny, in 4E. If it is not one mob, then his action will likely change.

Trask:

Free action: Nature knowledge check +9 = 25
Surprise action: Assuming this horde is considered one mob, then Trask will Command it to "STUMBLE!".

Command (Implement), +10 vs WIL, R10, target is dazed UEOMNT. In addition, you can choose to knock the target prone or slide the target 3+CHA mod squares

29 vs WIL, Dazed, knock it prone

Remember guys, a prone and dazed target has to waste a turn to stand.

Nah, they're single file - take out the leader and watch kobold dominoes ensue.

Swarms, by definition, are immune to movement effects. I spent alot of time this weekend trying to find out if they could be commanded or affected by any other single mob ability. I didn't find anything.

But, thanks to GS, and an attack roll of 1 for the horde, this is what happens.

Trask looks back and sees a pile of small lizardfolk sneaking up on Amaril. They see him see them and, with a cry, charge Amaril. Trask barks a command at the leader of the pack "STUMBLE". The leader does. The rest of the tightly packed creatures fall over him in turn and wind up sprawled at Amaril's feet.

At the same time, 2 kobolds appear from the cave directly south and a kobold and a horde appear from the other southern cave.

Kobolds are small creatures. According to the monster source I have, the horde, as a swarm, is only medium size. I agree with Shiz that that doesn't make sense so they will be medium/large - that is, they occupy 2 squares. I'll modify the icon.

Bugger.. I can't find a 1x2 icon. We'll just assume it's large, then

Amaril, Round 1:

Curse Horde 1.

Otherwind Stride on Horde 1 teleporting to L6. I don't really like to blow an encounter on one bad guy but it's an AoE on a swarm.

OS: 7+9 = 16 vs FORT

Trask wants nature checks on all of these guys. The naming convention in the battle output is obscure though. What is KSB?

The front kobold is dazed, the rest are not. Ditto with the curse.

Amaril tries to curse the kobold horde and then uses otherwind stride to go.. (Where?)
The resulting blast just misses the prone Kobolds (16 vs Fort).

A kobold to the south moves forward a few steps, makes some kind of gesture with his hand, then twirls and fires a stone at Brunhilde (natural 20). The shot hits her in the knee causing it to buckle and her to stagger backwards (9 damage).

Trask tries to recall what he knows of kobolds. The hordes seem just as they appear, a bunch of small kobolds that, alone, are of no consequence. In numbers, they could be troublesome.

Trask has no idea what or who the robed guy is.

Trask, based on the evidence, concludes the two guys to the south are slingers. He also remembers that kobolds are particularly adept at traps. They also like to hang out near dragons like tickbirds near rhinos. Like to, that is, but there are many more kobolds than dragons so most just hang out.

In addition to pondering, Trask...

Trask draws his bow and fires at the spiker. In his haste, however, he doesn't properly set the arrow and it falls to the floor at his feet.

Green area is a mushroom garden. They are, at most, 12" tall. It does not provide cover.

Fandango moves and attacks the fallen horde. His attack is vicious (31 vs AC) but he hits as much air as kobold (26/2 = 13 damage).

Doppleboy, looking much fresher, suddenly appears before Fandango (stealth successful). He makes a quick slash at the rogue (25 vs AC) and catches the rogue by surprise. The cut is vicious (12 damage) but not nearly as bad as it could have been.

The robed kobold steps forward and gestures. A blast of flame shoots towards Brunhilde but (14 vs AC) hits the ground in front of her.

Baladir moves back toward Fandango and opens a can of holy whoop-ass on the doppledork (25 vs AC). His righteous strike (10 damage) makes everyone else feel better (+7 thp).

The other kobold to the south moves forward, makes the same hand gesture, and then fires a sling bullet at Brunhilde. His aim, however, is well off (12 vs AC).

Brunhilde moves next to Fandango and attacks the doppleganger. Her main attack (15 vs AC) misses horribly but she clips him on the noggin with the wild follow through (5 damage)

The first horde stands back up, dusts itself off, and surges forward to swarm over Fandango and drag him to the floor. Fandango (16 vs Fort 17), just manages to stay upright in face of the munchkin army's tactics.

The second horde moves forward and then charges Brunhilde (20 vs AC21). She manages to deflect their flurry of little knives, however.

Amaril curses the boy and launches witchfire at him. The doppleganger deftly avoids the attack (16 vs Ref). Amaril moves and disappears.

One of the southern kobolds moves forward and fires at Fandango. It slips on a 'shroom as it cuts through the garden and its sling stone (9 vs AC) misses badly.

Trask, intent on the fight in front of him, doesn't sense the kobold sneaking up behind him (stealth successful) until he feels two sharp pains in his side. The first short sword attack(natural 20), hurts abominably (12 damage). The second (27 vs AC), is not quite as painful (7 damage) but opens a painful bleeding wound (5 ongoing damage, SE). The kobold shifts to the south(minor action).

Trask bleeds heavily (5 ongoing) as he uses his super ranger skills to dart away from the kobold and take a shot at doppy. Despite his expert markmanship and his elven mulligan, the assassin manages to JUST dodge the attack (22 vs AC). Trask's exertions keep the wound open (ST failed).

Fandango smirks at Trask as if to say, "Let me show you how this is done."
He then shifts to a left-handed style and throws... only to realize his dagger is still in his right hand (natural 1).

The dopple make a shapeshifter feint against Brunhilde (19 vs Ref 18) setting her off balance (CA until EoT3). His subsequent dagger strike, however, (19 vs AC 21) is just off the mark.

Amaril hears a sound behind him (failed stealth) and turns to meet another sneaky kobold. Unable to see Amaril clearly, the kobold (12, 16 vs AC) misses with both short sword attacks.

The robed kobold moves forward a few steps and fires a bolt of ice at Brunhilde (27 vs Ref). Her feet are frozen to the floor (7 damage, immobilized, SE).

Baladir , scoffing at Fandango and Trask, shows them how it's REALLY done. Calling on holy reserves, hit thrusts a piercing smite at the doppledope and (23 vs AC) JUST sneaks in past it's defenses. The results are devestating (24 damage, Horde 2 and DB are marked until EoNT). For good measure, Baladir turns and, grasping Trask's shoulder, restores him (12 healing).

The other southern kobold moves north a few steps and slings a stone at Trask. The stone (25 vs AC 20) hits Trask in the side of the knee, causing it to buckle and making him stagger back a step (8 damage, push 1).

Brunhilde, seeing all the foes around her, goes into whirlwind mode and slashes each of them with her sweeping blow (19, 27, 25 vs AC). The Doppleboy looks rough (18 damage). A few in each horde are struck (18/2 = 9 damage) as well. All three are marked by Brunhilde (overwriting Baladir's marks)

Horde 1 tries to attacks Brunhilde (natural 1), but none are brave enough to get close with their little knives.

Some of the second horde surge forward and (23+2 vs Fort 22) overwhelm Brunhilde, dragging her to the ground (7 damage). The rest of horde follows and swarms the fallen warrior (minor action). Their little knives rise and fall, stabbing visciously (22+2 vs AC 21) and to great effect (15 damage).

Amaril uses his trickly warlock powers to teleport away from danger (to L4) and becomes much harder to target (+2 defenses and concealment).

Sneaky kobolds are usually best at reflexive defenses.. but not good enough. From the shadows, Amaril lays witchfire on Kobold Slyblade 1 (21 vs Ref) causing serious damage (15) and seriously hampering the kobolds offensive abilities.

One of the southern kobolds moves forward and, pointing out Trask to the other kobolds, launches a sling stone at the healer. The stone (22 vs AC 20) hits Trask on the knee, stinging badly (4 damage) and making him stagger back a step.

The witchfired slyblade, being unable to sense a reasonable attack target, drops into a defensive stance (+2 to all defenses).

Trask continues to bleed (5 ongoing damage). He gives a healing word to Brunhilde (23 healed) and fires a lance of faith at the doppleboy which the boy dodges easily. Trask is bloodied.

Fandango slashes at the boy with his sword - a feint that the boy falls for completely. He doesn't notice the hidden dagger in Fandango's other hand. That is, he doesn't notice until it appears buried in his throat (24 vs AC). The doppleganger's eyes bulge and it reaches hesitantly towards it's neck. Then it shimmers, growing taller and thicker, as it tumbles over backwards. The knife flashes from the dead monster's neck back to Fandango.

The doppleganger's corpse does nothing interesting.

The second sneaky kobold realizes it can't reach Trask and spots Amaril (perception). It charges (26+1 vs AC 21+2+2) and bruises Amaril's arm (-4 thp).

The robed kobold moves forward a few steps and gestures with it's implement. A bolt of fire arcs towards Trask (19 vs Ref 19), catching him in the side (8 damage, 5 ongoing fire damage). Trask begins to burn as well as bleed (unless he makes the ST he didn't try during his turn).

Nice try, though. :p

Amaril curses Slyblade 2 (can you have more than one curse active at a time?)
And did you mean to attack KS1 or KS2? KS1 has +2 to all defenses.

KS1 moves to get a better angle and then fires a stone at Trask. The stone (21 vs AC 20) hits the healer painfully on the kneecap (8 damage) and Trask staggers backwards.

The Kobold Slyblade, no longer blinded with magic, moves quickly towards the Trask and Amaril. It slashes a shortsword at Trask (13 vs AC) but the attack is easily avoided.

Trask continues to burn (5 damage) looks about to drop (3 hp left). Calmly, though, he grants himself a healing word (+20 HP) and then fires his bow at the slyblade - hitting it at point blank range (crit). The slyblade is badly wounded (19 damage - bloodied, reeling.) The slyblade takes and opportunity attack against Trask (24 vs AC 20), slashing him on the arm (5 damage). ST required. I also assumed you would rather keep the crit and damage and take the OA. Let me know if you want to change the attack.

Baladir, I am going to save heals for others, so if you can fit it in at some point, Lay Your Hands on Me, as Bon Jovi would say. I do not want to move adjacent to you not or the Sneak can flank me.

You were pushed by the spiker attack. It's hard, though, when updating on the phone on a big map to hit the exact square you want.

I'll just assume you shifted away one space and then fired. Where do you want to be? (Trask magically regains 5 hp but is still bloodied)

Trask manages to extinguish the last of the flames.

Fandango circles around behind the slyblade and, with casual ease, slides his dagger between two vertebrae (22 vs AC, 24 damage). The kobold's legs collapse and the slyblade's corpse slides off Fandango's blade.

Slyblade 2 moves quickly forward and attacks Fandango (16 vs AC) but his sword is easily evaded.

The kobold mage shifts away from Baladir (minor) and moves back behind the strikers. From that relative safety, he fires a bolt of flame at Baladir (16 vs Ref 18). Baladir ducks and the flame sails over his head.

The remainder of the first horde attacks Brunhilde with their tiny knives (16 vs AC) but Brunhilde easily evades or blocks the anemic attacks.

The second horde (24 vs AC) is not so easily avoided, however, and their knifes find numerous gaps (9 damage) in Brunhilde's defenses.

Fandango makes the most of the opening and stabs hard at the slyblade (30 vs AC, 13 damage). The kobold is reeling.

Reeling or not, the slyblade whips both swords into a complicated pattern that (24, 29 vs AC) leaves Fandango injured and bleeding (8 damage, 5 ongoing bleeding).

Baladir moves south to confront the more dangerous foe. His valiant strike (24 vs AC) easily hits the mage (7 damage). In reaction (immediate reaction), the mage teleports a few steps away from danger.

Kobold spiker 2 moves east to get a cleaner shot at Baladir. It doesn't help, though (16 vs AC). Baladir avoids the stone easily.

Brunhilde puts some backbone into her next swing at Horde 1. Her crushing surge (25 vs AC) hits some of the creatures (5 damage) and she feels better (+4 thp). Especially since the ice around her feet melts (ST = 20).

Horde 1 manages to regroup (Overwhelm surge recharge) and, as a mob, they rush Brunhilde (26 vs Fort). She is forced to the ground and pummeled / trampled / stabbed (6-4thp = 2 damage, prone).

FLANKING
✦ Combat Advantage: You have combat advantage
(page 279) against an enemy you flank.
✦ Opposite Sides: To flank an enemy, you and an ally
must be adjacent to the enemy and on opposite
sides or corners of the enemy’s space.
When in doubt about whether two characters
flank an enemy, trace an imaginary line between the
centers of the characters’ squares. If the line passes
through opposite sides or corners of the enemy’s
space, the enemy is flanked.
✦ Must Be Able to Attack: You and your ally must
be able to attack the enemy, whether you’re armed
or unarmed. If there’s no line of effect between your
enemy and either you or your ally, you don’t flank. If
you’re affected by an effect that prevents you from
taking opportunity actions, you don’t flank.
✦ Large, Huge, and Gargantuan Creatures: If a
flanking creature’s space takes up more than 1
square, the creature gains combat advantage if any
square it occupies counts for flanking.pg 285. Brun can flank.

Caltrop still in foot, Baladir shuffles over to towards the nearest kobold. In doing so, he walks right into the second caltrop trap (21 vs ref 18) and gets MORE caltrops in his feet (11 damage, slowed - SE). Being a trained warrior, however, he stays focused on his attack and (19 vs AC), makes a more than usually valiant strike on the kobold spiker (8 damage).

Spiker 2 shifts away from Baladir (minor) and retreats a few steps before whipping another sling stone at Baladir's knees (24 vs AC 24). Baladir takes another painful shot (8 damage) and staggers back a step (push 1). Baladir is bloodied.

Brunhilde unleashes another crushing surge on the first kobold horde (27 vs AC) and manages to kill a few more (9 damage).

The remains of horde 1 make a rather pathetic attempt to surge over Brunhilde (12 vs Fort 22) but the axe-mama fends them off easily.

Horde 2 tries to attack with the many tiny knives (16 vs AC) but none can get past her whistling axe to cause real harm.

Amaril moves south and, in the middle of a brightly lit cavern, disappears into shadows again (K11). His bolt (13 vs Ref) is a bit wide of the mark.

Trask pulls out his bow and attacks the spiker and (13 vs AC), his shot too goes wide of the mark.

Fandango takes a moment to get his second wind (+13 hp), break the ice binding him (13 ST), and goes into a defensive stance (+2 to defenses).

The wildmage fires at Fandango again and an ice bolt flies out (26 vs REF) hitting the rogue again (6 damage, immobilized-SE)

Baladir uses a second wind (15+1 hp), snatches the last of the caltrops out of his boots (20 ST), and goes defensive (+2 defenses).

The spiker, seeing Baladir as a wall of impregnable steel, decides to fling a stone at Fandango instead (24 vs AC). The stone clips him hard in the side (7 damage).

Brunhilde swings her axe at the few remaining members of Horde 1 but (17 vs AC) they manage to scurry out of the way.

Horde 1 makes a feeble attempt to stab Brunhilde (13 vs AC) but she can tell their little hearts just aren't in it any more.

Horde 2 does rather better (26 vs AC) and manages to stab the warrior a few times (6 damage).

Woops. If I'd known that, I would have done something differently. What's done is done. Bal? You got any heals left in the tank for Fandango? It's do or die...

"GET HIM UP!" Brun yells at Baladir.

Have you used Paladin's Judgement yet today, Lycos? If not, your +10 heal will help you stabilize him, just roll 5 or better. Saving Fandango should be our priority.

Trask and Fandango are unconcious and dying. The Kobolds are standing over Fandango's corpse. He has one strike.

Amaril....

Fandango is not dying since Trask stabilized him.

EDIT: OOps. Yes I was half a round ahead.

Baladir certainly can heal us both, actually.

Trask Death Save = 17.

Fandango first, Baladir.

Also, remember that death saves do not reset until an extended rest.

Trask should have stayed at bow range, damnit. Then the exploding kobold wouldn't have affected him.

I'm assuming that the horde is moving away from Fandango. So, when they move out of the way. I will move in to stabilize him. Sorry guys. I'm tapped out. I've got nothing but "At will" powers and my shields daily power left.

I'll move to Fandango. Sorry, I'd be more specific, but I can't see him on the map anymore.

I assume you can stabilize Fandango as he lays under the horde? Or pull him out as a minor? (unconc allies are treated as objects, and picking up an object is a minor, I think...)

So no one tried to lure the horde away... hmmm.. OK

Amaril moves, vanishes and tries to blast the horde without hitting Fandango. Unfortunately, he aims a Bit too high (13 vs Ref) and the horde easily ducks under the attack.

Trask the Untrampled (ST 17) remains stable and unconcious.

Baladir moves toward the horde and attempts to reach into the milling, hostile kobolds and snatch out his comrades unconcious body. How to handle this...move = move action. Stabilize is a standard action. Grabbing something could be a minor action but grabbing and dragging a heavy, armored body from among milling hostile creatures is no minor feat. So he has to snatch fast with little chance to defend himself and wait for an opening...

So, this is what I think (and I am open to formation):
Grabbing Fandango as a minor action requires a DC 15 (probably should be higher) DEX roll and opens Baladir up to an opportunity attack. Since he can't defend himself and grab fast, the horde get CA. Attempting to stabilize adjacent to mobs should also allow OA but the Kobolds can only OA one person one time per player turn so only one OA total will be allowed.

If you opt to do this, you can keep your heal roll or use the 17 as part of your grab (first roll - first action) and reroll the stabilize.

Lycos

I will opt to do this, and I will use the previous 17 for the grab.

And 28 for the heal.

In true heroic fashion, Baladir dives into the milling kobolds and (22 vs DC 15) drags his comrade away from certain death. Not content with just that, Baladir whips out a field dressing in record time (28 vs DC 15) and stabilizes Fandango. The rogue is no longer dying.

Baladir doesn't even realize, in his concern, that he was attacked my the horde (24+2 vs AC 24). As he finishes the bandaging, though, the wounds begin to sting (13 damage).

The horde seems torn and, while yearning to keep the attack on Baladir, finally succumb to their hatred (mark) of the warrior and attack Brunhilde. Their tiny knives flashing red with blood, they surge at the warrior and (19 vs AC 21) get beaten back by her waving axe.

(I am getting a time out when trying to place Fandango on the map. He is at E12, next to Brun and Baladir. Otherwise the map is up to date.)

Amaril moves again, shoots again, hits (28 vs REF) again. The horde is further diminished (6 damage).

Fandango and Trask continue to rest uncomfortably.

Baladir, who is already next to Brunhilde, moves to get next to Brunhilde. By this, I will assume he means to shift and not tag him with an OA. This also means he will be standing on Fandango.

While standing on Fandango, Baladir activates his shield (10 DR - daily action) and extends the protection to Brunhilde. He then drinks a healing potion (regain 15 health - no surge spent).

We need to save our surges as best we can. Let's rest for 15 minutes so Trask can use his 3 heals twice and have them ready.

2 Healing Words for Trask: 2 x surge+5 = 17+17=34
2 Healing Words for Fandango: surge+6, surge+10 = 19+23=42
1 Bastion of Health for Brunhilde: surge + 5 = 22
1 Bastion of Health for Trask = surge +5

Trask at full after 3 surges, 3/8.

Fandango at 42. He should probably do one more to get to full for 3 surges spent, 2/9.

Brunhilde at full after 1, 8/13.
