The party creeps farther into the bigger room. Damelon, in the lead, can see that this room might have at one time served as some sort of barracks or guard-room... there are what appear to be broken down bedframes along one wall, any cloth has long since rotted. The light is dim here, despite the torch in Crashing's hand. Several dark openings lead from this room. Along the east wall are a few crushed wooden boxes... old broken down foot lockers, maybe. At the SW corner of the room is a small table and a broken chair.

Urging the others to remain where they are, Damelon creeps towards the lockers on the east wall. He reaches them without incident and bends to examine them. Most are in pretty bad shape, little more than dust and a few pieces of loose wood with rusted hinges lying in the piles. One or two look to be a bit better... the best is actually made of metal.
As Damelon stoops and examines the mechanism, he starts just a bit as a soft, hissing voice whispers from somewhere in the room.
"Who... are... you?" it states, slowly, each word in a slightly higher pitch.

Just as he prepares to scan the room, Sigurd encounters an errant eyelash.
I'm guessing KT is out of LOS and hearing range.Yeah, he's just not far enough into the room. He hears a faint whisper, but wouldn't know where to look for it. Crashing can see a bit better, but that's about it.

Crashing leans into the room. At first he sees nothing amiss. Drawing his eyes upwards, however, and holding the torch higher, he notes a cleverly disguised... lump? protruding from the ceiling in the SW corner. Two pinpricks of green, reflected light shine from the lump. Something shifts and the shape of the dark blob changes... what look to be strings of tattered cloth dangle now from the edges of it.
The pinpricks of light grow slightly brighter and larger.
"What... do... you... want?" comes a soft, hissed query, slightly louder and more incessant than before. It's coming from that... thing, no doubt about it. Damelon gestures for Sigurd and Damelon to look in that direction.

Sigurd will move towards the creature, say within 3 squares of it. He'll speak, "We're looking for the answer to the corruption that has taken hold of this place."

Someone do a nature and arcana check to identify it.
Damelon will surprise everyone and launch in to a detailed fib about a letter from a grandfather delivered to his mom by a strange sea captain about a calamity on an unmapped island and how he ran from home to find answers and now believes he has been shipwrecked on the very island his grandfather referred to in his letter, so he wants to learn what happened and see if he can find traces of his grandfather.
Bluff +6 = 11.
Rats...Hopefully there is enough nonsense that not all of it will be disbelieved immediately.

Sigurd moves forward and begins speaking. The creature appears to... "unfold" a bit more, and protrudes farther from the ceiling. It's "face" is still deeply cloaked by some sort of very black, tattered cloth. KT moves in and to the side.
Turning around, Damelon begins to spin a yarn. The creature ignores him, focusing on Sigurd. (Bluff failed)
"The answer..." The creature seems to choke and gasp. Or is that laughing? "...to the... corruption."
It unfolds a bit more. It now appears to be some sort of gaunt, hunched, humanoid, standing upside down on the ceiling.
"Perhaps you see... that the 'corruption' IS... the answer!", it hoots, it's thick and stringy robes hanging down almost to the floor.
Suddenly, it turns its gleaming green eyes towards the doorway. The eyes narrow a bit. Sigurd, the closest to the creature, hears it sniff, faintly.
It gurgles.

KT and Crashing confer and whisper, trying not to attract attention. The creature does not seem to notice or care. They both can state that this creature is or was human, that much is for certain. They can think of no historical or legendary beast fitting this appearance. That said, it looks twisted and mutated... like the beings previously encountered, but more so. Maybe it has been here a much, much longer time?
It seems to be less insane too, for some reason. KT notes that it eminates a dark power... it has magical qualities, for a surety.

Damelon sidles to K28 and goes quiet, trying to hide behind the corner in case this gets nasty. He will hopefully be able to strike with combat advantage in that event.

Seeing as the creature appears to be ignoring him anyway, Damelon noncholantly wanders southwest into one of the dark, southern entrances. Reaching the openings, he turns and leans on the arch, pretending to look at his nails and listen to the conversation.
"Wow... what's that smell?" he thinks.
He turns slowly to see one of the "tainted" creatures. It is standing in the dim light of the next room, facing him, almost at point-blank range. It's only movement is a very slow nodding of it's head as it breathes. It doesn't blink as it stares at him, but it doesn't attack, either. Damelon notes that this guy is missing a large chunk of his skull. Something green oozes from the opening.

"Lost... we are ALL lost... are we not? Some more... than others. I will wait... until I am no longer... lost."
"How I..." it starts, cocking it's head... sideways maybe... slightly. It gurgles again. "got here. I am part of here. Have I always been here?" It hisses a laugh as it shakes.
"Who... am... I?" it says, the shaking stopping abruptly. "Nobody knows... anymore..." It coughs.
Sigurd sees Damelon turn slowly to confront the creature waiting behind him. His mind races. (Your mind is racing, right? RIGHT?)
The ceiling creature doesn't even glance towards the rogue but hisses something soft and low. The tainted menacing Damelon almost... relaxes a bit it seems.
The black... something sniffs again and glides north on the ceiling... it is tracking the scent of something. Something that just arrived, apparently. The black thing's green eyes fix on Crashing, in the doorway.
"What... have... you... done?"

KT considers interrupting Crashing to remind him that KT knows that "death-masks" are rather common in some cultures, and this looks like a fairly simple version of that, nothing more. ...but thinks better of it and shuts his mouth.
Crashing rummages in his bag a bit before withdrawing the mask. He holds it out towards the creature and poses his query.
It goes berserk.

Almost as if anticipating the conflict, Sigurd springs into action and moves towards the dark humanoid. As he draws near he gets a tickling in the back of his brain... a bit distracting, really. Crashing and KT, more sensitive to things cerebral, feel almost... melancholic somehow. Erik, a bit farther back can sense something magical about the feeling. Sad-magical?
Sigurd draws near and swings hard, but with the whole ceiling-standing thing unnerves him and he misses (16-2 vs AC: miss) badly.

Riposte Strike (melee), vs AC, d6+4, if the target attacks you before the start of your next turn you make a riposte attack as an immediate interrupt, STR vs AC, d6+4 dmg.

The parentheses are for an attack with CA. First Strike gives me CA for attacking a creature that has not yet "acted" in an encounter. Since the Riposte is an interrupt, it could be interpreted as acting first. I can see a DM arguing against it, though, since the riposte is a triggered action. Triggers happen before what is triggered.

Erik squeaks by Crashing and takes a position in the corner. Focusing his attention on the creature across from him, energy streaks from his fingertips. He aims a bit high, however, and the bolt glances off the ceiling (16-2 vs WIL: Miss) and then dissipates into the floor.
Lamsi steps forward to behind Crashing and fires an arrow at the creature behind Damelon and (20-2(cover of dim light), DAM: 8) manages to stick it. The creature collapses, a quarrel in it's eye. (Dead)
The howling black critter on the ceiling takes a step back and raises an arm towards Sigurd and a dark ball of... darkness leaps towards the fighter. He manages to dodge (7 vs REF: miss) however, and the orb fades as it crosses the room.
From the southern and eastern doors lurch more tainted creatures!
One pulls up next to Erik and (18 vs AC, DAM: 8) slashes the caster visciously with a rusty sword. Whirling, it strikes next at Crashing, but (7 vs AC: miss) misses wildly. Erik is bloodied.
Two more bubble up from the door behind the black creature, and stepping around him, take swings at Sigurd with their weapons. The cannibal's club connects! (17 vs AC, DAM 7, Dazed) And so does the cutlass of the corsair (20 vs AC, DAM 6), who then tumbles southeast to block Damelon.
Another tainted cannibal draws up on the corpse of his recently fallen brethren behind Damelon, flanking him. He triest to take advantage of the rogue's split attention span but (15 vs AC) Damelon is having none of it, and blocks the cannibal's cudgel-swing with his double-sword.

I'll go since I think Crashing is going to busy at the other end of the room.
Use recuperating Strike on the Cannibal in front of Sigurd. If the cannibal goes down then I go back to the big guy.
Recuperating Strike; +7 attack, 1d12+4 damage, on hitting you gain temporary hit points equal to your Constitution modifier (+1). If you are raging, the number of temporary hit points you gain equals 5 + your Constitution modifier (+1).
Burn an AP and do it again.
26 to hit the first time.
16 pts of damage.
16 to hit the second time.
11 pts of damage.

Crashing stops forward and summons Papa Gator to fill the space behind him. Tainted Soldier 1 looks around in a paranoid fashion and frantically swings his weapon around, injuring himself, mostly. (DAM 12). A shimmering glows around Erik, KT and Crashing (+2 THP).
KT turns his attention to mending the company caster. Erik's condition improves greatly (+10 HP, THP to 4). He then rebukes Tainted Soldier 1 (DAM 12, Marked by Lamsi) and directs it's attention to the hallway.
End of Round 1
Round 2
Sigurd lashes out at the nearest creature (Cannibal 1) blocking has path and absolutely destroys it (DAM 16, Dead). The barbarian roars in triumph! (-2 DEF to all enemies).
Erik tries to discern more about the main foe facing them, but since nothing has really affected it or even attacked it since his last turn, he doesn't notice anything new.
Quick as a cat, Damelon plunges his doublesword through the chest of the recently-arrived tainted corsair. It collapses surprisingly quickly, as the other did. (Dead)
Lamsi tries to peg the other creature behind Damelon but (12 vs AC: miss) her arrow is deflected by the creatures raised hand, though it passes on through.
The black creature reattempts to contact Sigurd with one of the dark energy orbs, and this time is successful. (21 sv REF, DAM: 7) Sigurd is tossed back against the wall (Slide 2).
Seeing Damelon somewhat distracted with the dispatching of a nearby foe, Cannibal 2 takes the opportunity to knock the rogue on the noggin with it's club. (19 vs AC, Damage 3, Dazed)
Soldier 1 shuffles a bit farther into the room and slashes at Erik (8 vs AC, miss) but just manages to snag a bit of robe-cloth. It gurgles, frustrated.
Exploiting the bit of new maneuvering room, the creature urges another of it's allies forward (Soldier 2) from behind it... the latter scampering in on the ceiling and dropping to the floor in front of Sigurd. Brandishing some sort of ancient blade, the new arrival strikes hard at the bard (20 vs AC, 10-2=8 damage) and carries his slash through into Crashing (18 vs AC, 6-2=4 damage).

Erik will channel a Chaos Bolt through his dagger at Soldier 1 (Sorcerous Blade Channeling: Use dagger to make ranged attacks as melee attacks).
CB: 14+5 = 19 vs WIL
Dmg: 1d10+6 = 10 psychic dmg
Even number rolled for attack (and I assume it hit) so secondary attack on creature w/in 5 squares.
CB on Soldier 2: 19+5 = 24 vs WIL
Dmg: 1d6 = 1
Also since even was rolled on the first attack, Erik gets +1 to AC until SoNT.

And if that bloodies him, I get +2 to attack on my next turn because of - Thaneborn Triumph - Whenever you bloody a foe, add your Cha modifier (+2) to the next attack roll against that foe.

Noting the rough shape that Sigurd appears to be in, KT utters soothing words and the barbarian recuperates somewhat (+11 HP, +4 THP). The bard then launches into a song that brings a dangerous gleam into the eyes of his allies (+1 ATK). Not quite finished with his foes yet, KT lashes out at the wobbly Soldier 1 (16 vs AC-2, DAM: 7, Dead), finishing it off.

Erik readies to fire a burst of energy at the Cannibal harassing Damelon. The rogue ducks just in time as the bolt flies over his head and (24+1 vs WIL, DAM: 11) explodes against the creature's chest. It staggers backwards and drops (Dead).
I assume Damelon wants to redirect his attack at one of the remaining mobs?

Damelon moves around the corner into the next room. There isn't a lot of light here.
Lamsi tries to take a shot at the nearest creature but the corner (12 vs AC+2) blocks the way and deflects her arrow south.
The Black Something, seeing Damelon skulk south, moves to intercept him. Damelon can only see it very dimly in the dark shadow of the bit of wall between him and Crashing's flickering torch, and so is surprised when a moment later he is struck in the midriff by something (22-2 vs AC, DAM: 6, Slide 2) and feels himself thrown heavily south.
In the darkness, something else hammers Damelon before he can gather his wits (19 vs AC, DAM: 9). Damelon sees stars. (Dazed) It is VERY dark here.
Tainted Solder 2, looking pretty ragged, shifts over next to the isolated Crashing and slashes hard at him (16 vs AC, DAM: 6) and then attempting to again (10 vs AC, miss) but failing the second time.

Dam has got himself into some trouble, not denying that. You guys will have to come attack the thing from the north.
Sigurd, the new charging rules make it clear you can charge the boss and still go around the cannibal. Every square you advance in a charge just has to be closer to your target than the square you are leaving.
Damelon, more frightened than he has ever been in his life, shifts to J30 and tries to get a hold of himself (Second Wind, +6hps, +2 defenses).

Damelon is still dazed, can't move AND use standard. *uhoh's*
Crashing takes a moment to get a bit of breathing room and then unleashes an accurate strike on the Tainted Soldier (22 vs REF, DAM: 10). The creature is looking pretty ragged at this point. Crashing peers towards the last place he last saw Damelon, but the rogue is out of sight into the next room. To make matters worse, Crashing's torch finally fades. KT's is the only light source in the room now.

While crashing considers, here's KT's plan:
First - Blunder (encounter) on TS 2 - +5 vs. will; 22. 1d6 +4 dmg and slide target 2 squares. During slide, I or 1 ally can make a melee basic attack against it. - 5 damage from blunder.
I will slide TS2 to H23, and Siguard can make a melee basic against it.
Then I will move to J26 to try to illuminate more of the area.
If I were dishonest, I'd edit my attack to go for the "something black" after the fact, to give Dam a window to flee...but...I posted what I posted.

Round 4, Continued:
Erik takes careful aim over PG and around Sigurd, and manages to reflect a chaos bolt off the northern wall and directly into the mouth (24 vs WIL, DAM: 7) of the yowling and frothing tainted soldier. It's head explodes in a shower of goo.
Damelon, feeling more than a bit worried, beats a hasty retreat for the relative safety of the group. Something in the darkness takes one final swipe at him but he (9 vs AC: miss) manages to dodge away.
Having no other target, Lamsi takes a double-shot at Something Black in the doorway. Her first (21-2 vs AC, DAM: 7) strikes home, burying itself in the monster's side through it's tattered cloak. It seems barely to notice.
Something Black first seems to draw it's energy reserves up and the arrow falls out of it's cloak, half melted off. Then it goes on the offensive, firing a dark blob of energy towards Crashing who, somewhat caught off guard (24 vs REF, DAM: 9) by the shot that strikes him in the shoulder, is tossed across the room by the impact (slide 2 west). Moving with an uncanny quickness, it then scampers between KT, Damelon and Erik and turns and faces the group from the doorway.
KT and Erik can make OA's. PG too, I guess. Damelon is dazed, so none for him, I believe.
Another tainted cannibal bursts from one of the southern arches and accosts KT (8 vs AC: miss) but whiffs it's clubbed swing wildly.

The few glimpses of the creature's face that KT has seen seem to indicate that it was (is?) definitely human. Lamsi's arrow definitely hurt it, but aside from the hole it's robe, it seems to have shrugged off the majority of the damage (regen 5). The robes it wears (what is left of them) seem vaguely monk-ish in nature, judging by the braided-cord belt. It is clearly at least partially insane, though now and then KT sees a spark of intelligence in the glowing green eyes.

Crashing knows for a FACT that this exact sort of creature does not exist in any of the tomes he's studied, home or abroad. (I have this mental picture of a loincloth-wearing cannibal sitting in the library of congress, spear leaning against the cubicle). However, he does think he has a better understanding the capabilities of the creature... it does seem somewhat like certain mummy lords of lore.
Middling armour class, fortitude and reflex defenses, high will defense. It's probably immune to disease and poison and seems to project a large aura of despair... sapping the exhuberance of anything that tries to hit it (-2 to ATK rolls against it). Whether as part of it's innate metabolism or the crazy fizzing green stuff, it seems to regenerate regularly.
It looks killable, but it won't be an easy fight.

As the Black Something scurries by them, KT, Papa Gator and Erik all attempt to make contact. The creature is bobbing and weaving so KT (12 vs AC: miss) and Erik (9 vs AC: miss) flail wildly. PG does a bit better (23 vs REF, DAM: 4) snagging a piece of the critter's foot on the way by. Crashing feels a bit better (+4 HP).
Encouraged by the success of his pet, the shaman soothes his grievous wounds (surge) and bolsters the badly bleeding Damelon (+1hp) and then lines up his own attack. A bit distracted by all the action, it fails to connect (Natural 1).

The fighter blinks and staggers northwest. Directly sighting Crashing again, the creature roars "NOT... YOURS!" and then garbles something about "alone" and "despairing".

(Seriously guys, the only decent roll in the past round has been Erik, on a minion! :D ) In desperation, the medicine-man offers a quick apology and tosses the mask. It is snatched out of the air by the Black Something, and it slowly, almost reverentially, lowers it to look at it. It utters a long, drawn out sound akin to a wail.

Lamsi, taking her cue from the rest, lowers her bow somewhat.
The Black Something in the hallway looks at the mask for a second more, then looks at the party. Then, with one more glance at the mask, turns and bolts east into the darkness.

The group searches through this and the southern room. The former appears to be some sort of guard post, and the latter to be some sort of barracks. The remains of broken down bunks are clearly visible there.
Damelon returns to the dusty chests and manages to break a few apart. A few leather scraps inside, nothing of value.
