You enter into the cavern, and the roar of fire and smell of smoke grows louder.

Not too far into the cave, you can see the glow of fire in a large natural cavern. Creeping carefully forward, you begin to see the room is filled with orcs - but all of them are engrossed in something taking place in the northern end of the cave, and you can hear grunts and shouts coming from that end.

Map Notes: sand = fire. small fire squares are forges. BIG fire is just that - a huge raging fire.

Trees = fallen rocks/rubble/difficult terrain

Couple more notes -

You have the element of surprise here, if you choose to use it.

If you want to see more about this room without blowing your chance at surprise, roll perception.

And - since sooner or later, they're going to notice you - roll initiative.

What you do see is 6 drudges, a couple of berzerkers, and two distinct orcs of types you've never seen before. A caster, and a heroic looking one.

A dwarf is barely visible on the far north end of the room, being badly beaten by the champion type orc. You even hear the orc demand, in broken common, that the dwarf "open the tunnel"
Map updated on the presumption that Jacoby points out what he sees to everyone else.

in the interests of not crowding the ledge to look out, and in the interests of keeping the 8 foot gargantuan out of view, Urvi and Tor will both not advance to look out, allowing the rest of the party to do the reconnoitering.

Shere can just reach the caster with Shared Madness from here, and that lets a second target "that you can see" get damage. So I can target the caster, zot the hero. Or I can target a grunt (lower will save) and zot the hero.

Urvi can't do jack from here AFAICR

Ok - I have your init rolls - no new info from perception - so... you have, for now, the element of surprise. What do you want to do?

Surprise means 1 action only for the first round, followed by going into round 2 with normal actions.

And remember, knowledge checks are free actions.

In a word, yes. You've had several posts discussing what you might do. In a table top setting, I would consider that to be done in real time. In a forum setting, likewise, I'm going to count posts discussing your options as passing time in game that could cost you surprise.

If the way is clear, Raj will cast Dragonfrost on Angry Orc 2. +6 vs fort, D8+7 damage, Push 1.

If Orc 2 has cover, Raj will cast on AO1 instead. (I check and have clear line to each).

7+6+2 (CA) = 15 vs Fort
11 damage if hit.
Push north 1.

You've not had surprise in those fights. If your characters are going to stand in a hallway in plain sight of the orcs who currently have their backs to you and have a tactical discussion, they're going to run the risk of the orcs turning around, and the longer you wait (measured in the # of posts made), the more the likelihood that you'll lose the element of surprise.

No - it's difficult terrain but not high enough to provide cover.

But by the looks of the rubble, it's recent, and some of the piles of rock have orcish bodies under them.

Round 0 - Surprise Round

Urvi, having stowed her axe (note important for future actions), readies her crossbow quickly and fires at the nearest drudge (#2). Her shot seems like it's about to miss (12+ac) but the distracted Orc (+2 CA surprise) leans the wrong way and it clips his jugular. He collapses, dead.

Shere attempts to call down divine madness upon the caster (unidentified). Unfortunately, even distracted, the caster senses the attack and blocks it mentally. (12+2 vs. will; miss)

Jacoby takes a long range shot at Berserker 2. As with the bolt from Urvi, it looks a near thing - but the Orc takes a hit in the top of the shoulder (17 vs. AC; hit: 6 dmg)

Raj sends an icy blast at Berserker 2 on the heels of Jacoby's crossbow bolt. Having just been hit, however, the Orc has stiffened, and is braced for further damage (15 vs. fort; miss) - the blast of cold bounces off of his back, ineffective.

Duma sends a blast of light at the same Berserker, and his attack is spot on (22 vs. fort). The orc grunts in pain (11 dmg).

Shere, watching Urvi launch herself across the room winces at the fountain of blood she unleashes from the Orog.

He declares the caster dead (Minor: Oath of Enmity), while wondering what it is exactly (Free: Knowledge). He then advances on it (Move: E14, it should be dead?), firing off a blast of divine energy (Standard: Radiant Vengeance: +6 vs Will, 1d8+5 radiant dmg, +4THP). He follows up with a second (AP: Radiant Vengeance ...)

Attriel: A crossbow takes two hands to operate, so Urvi's axe had to have been stowed. You need to rethink the actions.

didn't she get a hand crossbow last dungeon?

Well, then, instead of attacking the drudge, she'll draw her axe, and continue with the second action

Shere will oath, blast the drudge, move, melee the drudge. The melee attack is a +7 vs AC instead of +6 vs will, so 16 vs AC on the drudge (after a failed 10 vs will)

Her character post and pdf says no. Actually even if she did - a great-axe is a two hander regardless.

Can you please list exactly what her actions will be with the weapon issue in mind? Remember - draw and sheathe = minor. drop an item = free.

Urvi drops her crossbow (Free), and grabs up her Greataxe from where she leaned it against the wall (Minor: Draw), and advances to E13(Move: E13, avoiding OAs).

Urvi readies her axe and deftly maneuvers across the room, and goes directly after the Orog who's assaulting the dwarf. Her rage at the treatment of the dwarf translates into a flawless attack, and the Orog is caught by complete surprise by the swinging axe, which slices an artery which begins bleeding profusely.

Shere recognizes the caster as an Orc Eye of Gruumsh - but doesn't remember any details. He sends a blast of energy at "the grunt in the way" (#1) which misses, but he then advances on that same grunt (who's still alive) and is too tired to continue anymore. (Shere has no APs).

Jacoby launches a bolt at the 2nd berserker, which flies over head harmlessly. He advances into the room, and gives his (AP) classic 'NEENER NEENER" at the same orc. The orc is hot headed, and the words cut him deeply, bloodying him as he staggers closer to Jacoby (pull 2).

Rajkelleran... still need a move here

Duma advances into the room, and launches a blast of light at the 2nd berserker. He's pretty tough, however, and the light simply gives him a tan.

mutter mutter shere's invalid AP use had me killing off and removing drudge 1 before i realized he didn't HAVE an AP. Drudge 1 is not dead and will be on the next grid update.

Drudge 1 delays.

The remainder of the drudges sense easy prey in the casters at the back, and several of them move in the direction of Raj and Jacoby - falling into Raj's trap.

Drudge 3 charge to flank Shere with Drudge 1.

Drudges 4-6 charge Raj in a solid wall - but Raj, just before they reach him (column H) springs his trap on them instead? (Raj need confirmation before I proceed - you have an opportunity to blast them before they arrive in your square)

I'll use the first 3 rolls for the burning spray - that's all I need.

As the three orcs approach Raj with murder in their eyes, two of them suddenly find themselves burning, and only the first of the group (#4) makes it to Raj alive. Raj, meanwhile, glows with fire.

Drudge 1 (realizing he didn't need to delay) and 3 both attack Shere (one with charge bonus) (26; 20 vs AC17; hitx2; 10dmg)

The Eye of Gruumsh summons a hammer of magical energy which he sends whirling towards the feet of our three casters. Landing in E16, the hammer explodes with power sending Duma, Raj and Jacoby reeling (22, 24, 25 vs. reflex - hit, hit, hit). The blast knocks you prone but you sense the power wasn't fully developed and could have done FAR more harm (5 dmg - min of a possible 17).

Og, Orog Hero takes a step backwards (north) and then charges Urvi (+1 to hit), roaring I'm going to rip your guts out!!! as he swings a vicious looking bastard sword. The swing is devastating (29 vs. AC), and Urvi staggers as it sweeps across her belly (19 dmg; bloodied).

The berserkers both move to flank Shere (D13; F15). Berserker 1 swings his great axe. Berserker two roars, and looks invigorated by it, while he swings (warrior's surge, regain 16 hps) both blows (20; 17 vs. aC17) hit, and Shere is badly hit (14+7 dmg = 21 dmg) leaving him staggering on his feet (1 hp).

Effect: The target can spend a healing surge and regain +4 additional hit points. You also slide the target 1 square.

Slide him to E15? Depends on Atty's choice.

Standard: Jacoby casts

Focused Sound - +6 (CHA) vs. Reflex, Hit: 1d10 + Charisma modifier (+4) thunder damage. Until the end of your next turn, any attack against the target can score a critical hit on a roll of 18-20.

onto whoever Tor Shere is attacking at this point (at one of the zerkers not a drudge)

Also, Virtue of Valor on Tor Shere last round for killing off an orc.

The 2thp would come on between hits 1 and 2 from the berserkers, so he'd have 3hps left before your heal.

Question the first: Did the Orog take his 5 pts ongoing at the beginning of his turn?
Question the second: When the orog charged, he was running past the dwarf... does the dwarf get an OA?

With these orcs around, I can't use ranged on Og so I'll shift west (to E16) and drop tempest breath centered at G15 (targeting Dr3, AO2 and Dr4).

Tempest Breath, +6 vs Ref, 2d6+7 acid damage, target can't get CA, Raj gets concealment until EoNT.

Drudge 3: 10 vs REF
Angry Orc 2: 21 vs REF
Drudge 4: 20 vs REF

16 acid damage to each hit.
No CA for those hit until EONT
Concealment for Raj until EONT

Can I stay prone and use my move action to shuffle to the desired location then turn on my butt and fire off the TB to the location specified with a -2 to hit penalty for being prone?

If so,

You can crawl - but if you crawl and leave a square adjacent to an enemy, you grant an OA and they get CA for your proneness.

But then again, if you fire from where you are, they get OA's anyway with the same CA.

On the plus side, there are only 2 hostiles next to you, and one is clearly a minion, probably with limited damage potential.

Shift is one space. Nothing in the shift rules say you must be standing.
Only that it not require a skill check.

Alternative 1:

Raj, surrounded by enemies, stands abruptly up and, with a wave of his dagger, sweeps fire into the surrounding area (centered at G15). Raj, hopes he can avoid his own fire and, if not, will use his inate fire resistance to mitigate the damage.

(BF, d8+7, Raj gets fire shield - 3 damage to next melee attack that hits.)

Figures: Have trouble hitting others and can't miss myself... GRRRR

15 damage to those hit.

15-5 resistance damage to Raj

But the general vs. specific rule means you still can't get away from crawl explicitly provoking OAs. Both are explicit references - but Crawl is explicit to being prone, while Shift is not - making shift more general, and thus overruled by Crawl.

And getting away from the "legalese" - how, seriously, would anyone expect to *crawl* away from someone next to them while avoiding any attacks? Not gonna work.

If I just move away, I get OA.
If I shift-move, I don't.

Crawl-move = OA
Crawl-shift - I don't think OA is automatic just because it's a crawl. I can buy it that you need to be able to shift 2 to move one square because crawl = 1/2 speed. I can also buy it that you can crawl shift with no OA because 1/2 speed is the max distance you can move with crawl.

I don't agree that crawling in and of itself = OA. Any non-shift movement = OA.

In the end, though, it doesn't really matter what my interpretation is. You are the DM and we ultimately go by your call.

There is no such thing as crawl-shift. Crawl is a subtype of move. Shift is also a subtype of move, with the addendum that it does not provoke OA's. Crawl is not a subtype of shift.

So after all that...

Raj stands up and lets out a blast of acid to the north which, sadly, only seems to hit one enemy, but gives Shere a nasty burn. (Vs. ref hits tor and drudge 1)

Shere is in pretty bad shape now.

Drudge 1 is worse off - the acid kills him - but as he's dying, the Eye of Gruumsh shouts something in a gutteral language that inspires the Orc to take one last swing, and his only possible target is... Shere. (13 vs. AC). Fortunately, the acid gets in the orc's eyes, and his last desparate swing goes wide.

The drudge (the last drudge) shifts to the south, and seeing the protective swirls on Raj, swings at Jacoby instead. (26 vs. ac) The club slams into Jacoby's knee (5 dmg).

Orc Eye of Gruumsh eyes Raj and Raj feels a mental assault (minor; 17 vs. will; hit; that weakens his defenses: -4 to AC (SE)) then calls out to his berserker ally (32), pointing out a weakness in Raj's defense, and the Orc swings, inspired by his leader. Despite the inspiration (11 vs AC16+2(conceal)-4(effect)) the orc just can't connect. However, thanks to his leader, the berserker looks rejuvenated somewhat.

Berserker 2, meanwhile, shfits to flank Raj with the Drudge, and having done so, swings. This time his blow (18 vs. AC16+2-4) lands easily, and even as the berserker is burned by Raj's defenses (3 dmg), Raj is seriously wounded (13 dmg; bloodied).

With no enemies adjacent, the berserker roars in pain as he is burned further by the lingering magics upon him (5 fire/lightning dmg).

Orc Eye of Gruumsh eyes Raj and Raj feels a mental assault (minor; 17 vs. will; hit; that weakens his defenses: -4 to AC (SE)) then calls out to his berserker ally (32), pointing out a weakness in Raj's defense, and the Orc swings, inspired by his leader. Despite the inspiration (11 vs AC16+2(conceal)-4(effect)) the orc just can't connect. However, thanks to his leader, the berserker looks rejuvenated somewhat.

Does that attack roll include the -2 hit penalty for being me being concealed?

Raj shifts to the southeast, and sends out a blast of cold at the 2nd berserker, which knocks him backwards, reeling, staggering on his feet (19 vs. fort; hit; 12 dmg).

Duma shifts to the northwest, and directs *his* fire at the Eye of Gruumsh, focusing a lot of concentration on him, he manages to blast the Eye with a power bolt that backlashes onto himself. (19 vs. ref; hit, 11 dmg, 5 dmg to self). His turn over, his protective zone evaporates.

The Orc Eye of Gruumsh takes the briefest moment to focus his thoughts (recharge success), and then delays his turn until after the Berserkers.

Og bleeds a bit (5 dmg ongoing), stands up (taking 6 dmg), and pauses a moment to consider the wisdom of killing the enemy in front of him vs. going after the enemies who are standing. (Wisdom check: DC15; Roll 9; fail). He is overcome by blood lust, however, and regardless of the tactical sense, he swings his bastard sword at the fallen Urvi. Coup de grace At the last second, a spark from the massive fire flies out of the fire and lands on the back of his neck, even as he is swinging, and his blade *misses* Urvi by some miracle. He makes his save, and the bleeding stops.

Berserker 1, not nearly as mindless as Og, charges at Duma to protect their healer, the Eye. (26 vs. AC; hit; 15 hps + 10 dmg = bloodied) He deftly swings and clips the hero, bloodying him (25 dmg, 8 hps left).

Berserker 2, sensing weakness nearby and able to move freely thanks to the push from Raj, also moves to defend their healer (non charge, not direct path). His swing also lands (23 vs. AC) and Duma falls to the ground (8 dmg; 0 hps; dying).

The eye, who intended to let Zerker 2 heal on his next attack, finds that Zerker is out of position to do so (miscommunication, it's a bitch), and so he uses his Eye of Wrath on all those remaining standing that haven't already been affected, and stands his ground:

Urvi's condition remains unchanged.

Shere attempts to surprise the Eye with Sehanine's vengeance, but the priest is ready for anything (12 vs. ref; miss). He moves closer to Urvi, which Og notices with growing rage. He tries in vain to shake off the effects of the Eye's curse upon him.

Jacoby moves to where he can influence Urvi and sends magical healing powers to her. Her eyes open as her wounds close. (Did you want to slide Urvi?) +16 hps to Urvi.

Then he targets the Eye with his wand and activates its daily power, but he's rusty with it, and the shot flies wide (You rolled a 5. 5+6=11 vs. will: miss, no effect).

Og's attention is gotten by the rest of you, but he also sees that Urvi is awake, so he moves in a round about fashion to D11, and takes another swing at Urvi. With her still on the ground, his swing easily hits (23 vs. ac19), but Urvi, while badly hurt, remains conscious (11 dmg). He renews his mark on Urvi.

Berserker 1 ignores the unconscious Duma, and charges at Shere. (18+1 charge vsac17-4+1=hit; 7 dmg). Shere tries to avoid, but the magics from the Eye impede his ability, and Shere's injuries increase.

The eye barks an order to Berserker 1, and Berserker 1 finds himself able to make another attack! He's so inspired by the Eye's commands, that his swing at Shere is flawless (natural 20), and his great axe rips through Shere's middle in a gory mess. Shere crumples. (28 dmg). The eye moves to better protect himself from the nearby Urvi, and finally sends a new curse at Jacoby, and he finds himself surrounded in negative energy again (crit; 28 vs will; -4AC save ends).

He moves just north of Duma (D14) and uses the power jewel (minor) to regain the use of Tempest Breath.

The then casts Tempest Breath (+6 vs REF, 2d6+7 damage, target can't get CA, Raj gains concealment until EoNT) centered at D12 and targeting all 3 mobs.

Cutting Words - Range: 10 - +6 vs Will, 1d8 + Charisma modifier (+5) psychic damage, and you pull the target 2 squares. Increase damage to 2d8 + Charisma modifier (+4) at 21st level.

He will try to crispify all 3 of the remaining combatants by casting a burning spray centered at D12 (+6 vs Ref, d8+7 fire damage, fire shield on me (3 damage to first melee attack).

After that I'll....(rolls first)

17+6 = 23 vs REF on the EYE
4+6 = 10 vs REF on Og
15+6 = 21 vs REF on the Berserker

12 damage to those hit.
Raj gets damage shield, 3 fire damage to first melee attack to hit him.

Guys, lets kill the eye and move back towards the entrance.
But, given that I have -4 AC right now, I don't think I'll run just yet and give them 2 easy OA's.

Og, now facing a revitalized Urvi (somewhat), curses to himself for not killing her when he had the chance, and renews his efforts to do just that. He swings (22 vs. AC19+2+4) but Urvi is braced for the worst, and blocks the attack. (Urvi is no longer marked)

The eye, attempts to renew his curse on Raj (27 vs will, hit, -4ac SE again) and then, fearing for his own safety, steps TOWARDS Raj and invokes his own healing powers in his melee attack vs. the Sorcerer. His spear swings and (18 vs. AC) does minuscule (4) damage to Raj while the eye heals even while taking the damage from Raj's shield (16 hps - 3 dmg= 13 restored).

Urvi uses her font of life to shake off the negative effects of the Eye's curse, and the Eye starts thinking he maybe made a mistake ...

She then marks all the orcs around her, and swings her axe at the Berserker
(Note, deducted 2 surges cause I forgot to deduct 1 last time), and the blade slashes the raging orc, while a bolt of thunder almost stuns the Eye. Both the berserker and the Eye are looking pretty battered.

Oh yeah I remember.

Ok - so Jacoby wakes up, realizes that he was daydreaming about being, I dunno, STRONG, then just looks at the eye, says "YOUR MOM WEARS BALLET SLIPPERS" and the shock (19 vs. will; 6 dmg) is so severe, he gives up, dies, falls backward, and roasts. The stink is almost unbearable when mingled with the raging fire to the north east.

Seeing his priest fall, Og starts to look like he knows this fight is starting to go against him... he's not gonna run (insight: passive) but he *is* starting to eye that dwarf from time to time...

Death saving throws are not like your ordinary saving throws. Heal allows you to grant the recipient a saving throw with a +2 but you can't give someone a death save.

But if you heal him BEFORE his turn, you can STABILIZE him, so if he takes no more damage, he won't have to keep rolling saves.

If so, Raj, filled with bloodlust, wants desperately to blast the remaining berserker.

But the veneer of civility forces it's way to the fore and, with an oath of frustration, Rajkelleran tries desperately to scrape together what little healing lore he's learned and save his companions life.

"Bleeding bad.. apply pressure.. elevate.. airway, breathing, circulation..."

15+1 = 16 heal.

Og roars in rage as his ally, the eye falls, and shifts south one. Disregarding the berserker (whom Og clearly sees as worthless), he makes a fearsome sweep with his bastard sword, threatening all adjacent to him:

Orog’s Rebuke (immediate reaction, when marked target shifts, moves, or makes an attack that does not include Og as a target; at-will) Og makes a basic attack.

I'm not sure Urvi wants to move, she doesn't have THAT many HP left ...

Urvi brings her axe down again, hoping to see blood soon (Standard: Strength of Stone: +7 vs AC, 1d12+4 dmg, +4 THP)

She then triggers her armor again(Minor: -1 Surge, 10 DR, hoping that she can keep this up long enough to take down Og.

I've used my daily, all four encounter powers and my second wind ... but I only get 5 more rounds out of this armor. Hopefully by then Og is hurt bad enough for you two to finish him ... or you might consider running :o

Just as note there, Lycos. As a DM, anytime someone assumes something is a miss, I don't question their judgement. It's a miss.. even if it wasn't.

Bah.. I was going to move and try to push Og towards the fire.. but Jacoby's position kills that idea. If I move and push, it puts Jac and Urvi in AoE position again.

So.. Hmm.. lets try a different angle. Raj moves east to G16. He then casts Dragonfrost again (+6 vs REF, d8+7 damage, push 1).

You have been getting very sloppy in your posting of late, and it's becoming a problem. You got bull rush wrong twice, the second time, after I posted the specifics of how it works for you, and now you're not posting how your power works, and getting both the math and stats wrong.

I think you may not be aware of just how much administrative work goes into managing combat in a pbp environment. The DM has to do a LOT more in this format than in a table top environment where the players track their own surges, hps, defenses, powers, and the like. It's about 3x the work of the table top DM.

I'd appreciate it if you'd put more effort into posting your turns, because I'm not prepared to keep picking up the slack.

Raj, steps to the right some and, for the second round in a row no less, manages to pull off a good roll against the fates! His blast of cold slips through Og's defenses (19 vs. ref just hits) and the blast of cold pushes Og a little off balance (bloodied, slide NW 1).

Og, now finally starting to feel the pain, roars with rage (automatic recharge: Lay him open). He swings his sword and once again shouts, I'm going to rip your guts out!!! as he swings at Urvi. (26 vs. ac whatever) Urvi is sliced deeply, again, taking 20 damage, and 5 ongoing (SE). However, thanks to her defensive magics, she manages to come out of it with 3 hps left (20 - 10dr = 10 dmg + 36 dmg = 46 dmg of 49 hps).

Sensing the battle may be lost, Og then ignores the rapidly bleeding Urvi, and moves (OA GRANTED) north towards the dwarf, murder in his eyes.

You cannot push Og in the manner described if you move to E7.

Did you want to move to E7 and push NW to C5
or move to C7 and push NE to E5

And consider - small fires are forges - next to them is hot - but the big fire is raging, dangerous looking - almost alive. Next to IT is much more dangerous, obviously.

As Og slips away, Urvi swings, but misses by just a bit. She tries to shake off the ongoing damage effects, but her magic isn't able to heal her wounds. It does, however, prevent her from bleeding more (5 dmg ongoing - 10 DR = 0 dmg taken).

Then she moves... (need resolution - see question prior)
