Hello all,
I wanted to post a brief update on how our beta test is going so far. Many Legends subscribers and Lords of EverQuest players have joined the program over the last several weeks, and we are pleased to announce that more invitations are being sent out today. These new testers will be coming from the pool of long-term EverQuest subscribers who applied for beta on our official website. Additionally, winners of the promotion with PC Gamer Magazine are being brought in as well.
The feedback we've received so far has been fantastic, and has gone a long way toward helping us make EverQuest II even better. We look forward to more invitations being sent out in the near future.

Well, one of my friends locally has been in the beta for some time now. Far as I know he is neither a Legends nor LoEQ subscriber so I don't know what sort of scam they're running in terms of actual eligibility.
He did tell me one rather disturbing thing... you can friggen DIE .... while crafting!!. Seems they have random events occur during the combine cycles, and you only have a few seconds to respond to them. Failing to do so incurs physical damage. Take enough damage and voila, youzza be a corpsicle.
He also described it as EQ meets DAoC, so take it for what its worth...

lol. I love that. No more macro crafting for hours on end. hehe.
I have a friend of a friend who got in a few days ago. I cant wait to hear his NDA approuved feedback.
So they seem to be moving to more of an open phase, letting in more random people and contest winners.
Hopefully the real open beta wont be too far behind, which means actual release may still work out for mid November.

Soo, did they keep the good parts of EQ and DAoC, or the annoying ones?
My (probably) non crafting self is really going to have a hard time not laughing the first time a LoW blows him/herself up. :P

I wonder if certain crafts are inherently more dangerous than others...
Like a tailor pricks their finger with a needle, vs a smith accidentally blasting hot slag all over their face.

That makes sense. There is some physical risk involved in crafting.

You'd probably just end up poisoned if you prick yourself. Cloth dye is toxic. Or something.

You begin crafting a Tuna Sandwich.
A loaf of bread scowls at you, ready to attack, looks like an even battle.
You try to slice off a piece of bread, but the loaf dodges!
You slice YOUSELF with a bread knife for 38 points of damage!
A loaf of bread begins to cast a spell
You try to slice off a piece of bread, but miss!
A loaf of bread looks a little dryer and harder.
You slice a loaf of bread for 49 points of damage.
You fashioned a piece of bread!
A loaf of bread says: Aaurghhh.... the Muffin Man will avenge me!!!
A can of tuna glares at you threateningly, looks like it can wipe the floor with you!
You begin to cast a spell.
A can of tuna says: I really hate Chefs like you!
A can of tuna adheres to the counter.
You try to open a can of tuna, but a can of tuna parries!
You stab YOURSELF with a can opener for 54 points of damage!
Your Clamp Down spell has worn off.
A can of tuna falls of the counter and crushes YOUR foot for 234 points of damage!
You have been slain by a can of tuna!
LOADING... PLEASE WAIT

Don't worry Ash. We can always "forget" to cover his ass a couple of times during the first few weeks of live.

Of course we'll have to kick him out of the group first now that we'll have group debt. :D

You've never wanted to do *anything* before anyone else? Get into the amusement park first? See a screener of a popular movie? Be some lucky gal's first? Nothing?
That's what this is (altho not as fun as the last one I mentioned there).

Well, yes. But...all the stuff you mention is for a finished product (well, maybe excepting the last one on your list :) ). Beta testing a game is just that - testing before it's ready. I'm not knocking those of you that like to do it, I just don't see the thrill myself.

Dude, you would not believe the hot chicks I pull down when I go to bars and start bragging about being in the betas for UO, AC, DAoC, Horizons and other asundry games. It melts the ladies like butter...

Dude, you're married and have kids and a stinkdog. The chicks swooning over your gaming hobby was last night's dream.

True true but in my experience (beta'ed AO, DAoC, There) betas aren't that bad. Sure they have some rough edges but it was still enjoyable. Plus I like to think I've helped some. *shrug*

The AO beta was unplayable. The CoH beta was just like the live game.

The AO beta was not unplayable. There were problems but that is theoretically what a beta is there to sort out. The major problem with AO was that the problems which emerged in beta were frequently not sorted out before the product went live.

I played Beta in SW:G. It was alot of fun and yes, you felt like you got to contribute to something. You also get much more access to the development team in Beta - relationships which can carry over into the live game.
But... if you don't like that Beta stuff, that's fine. Leaves one more slot for us to grab :)
