View Full Version : Draft Analysis - Third of the way through the season

Was looking over my draft results, with the initial interest to see where I drafted Eric Johnson or if I drafted him at all. Turns out, I got him in the last round, round 15. Couldn't remember.
But my initial interest turned into this question... How good did I do at drafting, really? I mean, the season is a third of the way over, so how good at predicting the year did I do?
Round 1: Priest Holmes - The real question, at the time, was Holmes v LT v Ahman. Who deserved to be the #1 pick? Obviously I chose well by not choosing Oh-man Green. :) In our league, Priest is 6th overall RB with 70+ pts and LT is 4th with 73. Tiki has 85pts, amazingly, and Tom Jones and Alexander round out the top 3. So basically, based on preseason rankings and predictions, I did okay. Probably should've gone the way of LT, but so it goes...
Round 4: Javon Walker - Seemed to be a disappointment based on how he started the year, then took off to the tune of 200yds and 3 TDs. Has had one (of 4 possible) great games since, and has been steady. Cannot ask for more out of a team's #1 receiver.
Round 11: David Carr - My 2nd QB is outscoring my 1st (Pennington, Rd 2) by a substantial margin, and it looks like it will just get better. Granted, this coming week (6), Penn had better outscore Carr (Penn v SF, Carr v Ten), but still...
Round 15: Eric Johnson TE SF - E Johnson is in the top 40 out of all positions in our league. That's pretty incredible. Especially since he's had two weeks of 100+ yds, and has as many TD catches as Torry Holt and Derrick Mason. Easily my highest quality pick of the draft.
Of course, out of the 15 drafted, only 8 remain as draftees. Better than some teams, but out of the teams that drafted live, wow, not too hot. :)

My drafting was wrong, but not stupid.
I did not think Jamal Lewis deserved to be a top 5 pick like most experts were saying, but I got him at #14 so that seemed good.
I chose Marvin Harrison over Terrell Owens, picking a known producer over an unknown potential producer.
Brooks has worked out was well as any QB available at the time I took him.
My big mistake was believing the pre-season TJ Duckett hype and avoiding Curtis Martin due to his age (and a general dislike of the Jersey Jets. )
My TE pick of Daniel Graham was my best move in hindsight. He has scored in every game this season.

I was unable to draft for myself due to my internet connection being down, and was quite upset about it at the start of the season. However, by the time the season started I'd learned to like my team, and with only minor chages was confident they would take me places.
Then Fantasy Football Reality set in...
Draft Choice : Clinton Portis - Probably the choice that made the most sense at the time (I was 8th) both from a previous stats standpoint and a quality of player standpoint. I was looking forward to seeing many points from him, but the pathetic O-line in Washington has reduced this once mighty juggernaut of fantasy points to a mere 10 a week average.
Draft Choice : Dominick Davis - This was actually someone I would have taken myself had I drafted live (the only such player to make my team in the end). I had an inkling he'd be better than most people thought, and he's proven me right when he's healthy.
Draft Choice : Derek Mason - I did not believe the hype, and it looked like I was right through 3 weeks. I traded this guy away when my woeful QB situation warrented it, and now I cry softly sometimes late at night when nobody is awake to hear...
Draft Choice : A. Johnson - Wow. I did not think this guy would be this good. I knew Carr would have a breakout season, and would have selected him as a QB had I had the chance, but he and Johnson have really gelled, and Johnson has far more talent that I gave him credit for. Score one for the Autopicker...
Draft Chocie : Kellen Winslow - Ouch! He never had time to look good before he was gone. Now I'm hurting at the hardest position to fill on anyone's roster, as with 16 teams and maybe 10 decent TE's if you lose yours or pick one late you're pretty much screwed.
Draft Choice : Miami DEF - Well, if Miami had an offense so these guys could get a 5 minute break once in awhile I'd be a lot happier...
Draft Choice : Tommy Maddox and Carson Palmer - Listen up kids, this is what happens to you when the Autopicker waits until Round #9 to pick you a QB. Maddox went down early, prompting me to make the following mistake...
Trade : Kerry Collins - I believed the hype. "All the Raiders need is a strong arm like Collins to start airing it out downfield to their talented receivers". Seems all Collins needs is glasses so he can tell his own talented receivers from those on the other team's defense...
Pickup : Keary Colbert - Steve Smith should break a leg every seaosn. Keary's no postWeek 4 Derek Mason (yet) but he's done admirably for a guy that is filling in for the supposed only WR threat his team had. Nice free agent grab.
Draft Choices : Atlanta DEF, Billy Cundiff, Musa Smith, Johnnie Morton, Willis McGahee - All history. I never keep 2 defenses or TEs because I need the roster space for gambles on RB and WR pickups. Smith had no value until Lewis was out, and now it looks like that's even questionable. Morton is simply one of those few players I hate for no valid reason whatsoever. McGahee had some value with T. Henry slightly injured and playing fairly poorly, but that whole offense is struggling (at least running the ball) so he was easily my most tradeable commodity at the time.
That's it for my draftees (I added Collins and Colbert to expound on why I got rid of some of the draftees). I think the Autpicker did an admirable job given it's limitations (expect for waiting so long to get me a QB). Injuries and other factors have limited my squad so far this year, but I'm 4-1 despite poor point totals, so if I can find a magic mix or some of my guys start living up to their potential more I will be in it come playoff time.

I was pretty clueless going into the draft, but I knew some names better than others.
Sean Alexander, good solid pick there. Despite potential injuries early on, he seems no worse for wear.
Donovan McNabb, need I say more. #1 points guy on my team.
E. Moulds, he's been ok. Nothing special there.
C. Garner, he was good until he got injured and out for the season.
C. Rogers, he had a chance to be great, again injuries took him out early.
New England, Nothing special, but good enough to hang onto.
M. Vanderjagt, Not an exceptional year so far, but definitely not one to get rid of either.
W. Green, not a single TD yet. The Brewmiesters can keep him! :)
The rest of my draft have been replaced for better players. Overall, not a bad draft. Injuries have hurt me, but overall, I'm still doing well. I could use some good RB back-ups, but there are none at this time.
