Any of you guys happen to have an old ATX computer case you wouldn't mind parting with cheaply (or for nothing)? Building a new computer and trying to keep things cheap where I can. :D
Will probably be going to the Marketpro show this weekend, but figured I'd ask here just in case.

There's a marketpro show EVERY weekend in the Baltimore/DC Metro area. Can't believe you didn't know that. ;) Some a little further than others, but never too far if you're really looking for a deal and need it ASAP.

If you want to go too, lemme know.

Cool. Check it out and let me know. I am going to look for something new and cheap at the show this weekend, but if I can find a good deal, i'll take a look at what you have.

I might have one in my closet, I'll check tonight.

And yes dan, computer shows are every weekend in the DC area. I don't go much anymore but when I did go the Chantily show was the largest and best.

maybe it's a degradation of the shows in general, but the shows in chantilly that i went to last year weren't anywhere near as good as the ones in gaithersburg (monkey county fairgrounds) back in the late 90s.. (both being run by marketpro).

the ones now have more non-computer or severely outdated computer stuff than they do current computer stuff. and they're more expensive than getting everything online. when i was building my gentoo box (shuttle sff case, cpu, ram, and optical drive were all i needed), i saved between 10 and 25% on each part (including shipping) by getting them from newegg instead of the marketpro shows.

but, hey! if i want to get a 486 laptop, i know just where to go..

Sounds like the Marketpro shows out here in SoCal. That stuff and piles of gaudy electronic trinkets that you'd expect to find at a county fair. Or from a vendor in Venice Beach.

I go to the shows here about once/year to remind myself how crappy they are. Otherwise Newegg, and a few specialty retailers, have my hardware business. Or ebay.

True. Most of the show stuff these days is company excess (we upgraded all our machines to the lastest stuff (well, it was latest 5 years ago anyway), so we're selling all of our old stuff. It's brand new, hardly been used, vintage 1981 equipment! only 500$ for this IBM/XT!). That, and nail clippers. wtf?

But I still enjoy going; sometimes I can find a good deal, like her 22" monitor is a refurb that's worked for 2 years now and cost me like 70$ or something.

*sigh*

The heady days of sputnik and yuri gregorin, when the americans trembled at the sounds of our rockets.

or something :o

The heady days of sputnik and yuri gregorin, when the americans trembled at the sounds of our rockets.
and now they will tremble at the sound of our silence? ;)

i still remember one of the gaithersburg shows where one of the walls had the following vendors all lined up:

computer place, inc.
the computer place (the only local vendor of the group)
that computer place
another computer place

according to the guys i knew at the computer place, tables were assigned based on when companies signed up, but i couldn' help laughing..

I used to only buy from local vendors when I went.

Not surprised it's going/gone down hill.. it was declining the last few times I went (3 years ago).

ok.. the dell case i have (from a dimension xps d266) is atx, but the psu is not atx 12v, so you will probably want to replace it (it's only 200w, so a replacement wouldn't be a bad idea anyway). it's also got an ide zip drive that you can have (bonus?)

I'll see what i can find at the show tomorrow. Mostly asked on the off chance I can't find a decent deal there. I'd like to get the thing put together this week. :p
