At what point exactly does one choose their basic archetype? Can I conceivably make a character on every server without committing to an archetype to reserve the name Shiz?

Is that just once you have gone through character creation or is there something between (like tutorial)?

I think you create/name the toon before refuge. the at refuge you starte the class quests.

But is there a time before or immediately on the Isle when I could quit the game and have the character saved?

Yea, after it accepts the name and you log in for the first time :)

Actually, you can create the character and keep the name without ever actually getting INTO the game. It'll just say, "commoner" without an archetype. Level will depend on whether or not you tell it to skip the tutorial.

Step 1 - create your character. This includes race, physical features and name

You also select if you want to skip the tutorial (the ship thing). If you do skip the tutorial, you begin on the Isle of Refuge as a level 2 Commoner.

First thing you do on the Isle is speak to the NPC right by the dock. He talks a bit and then asks you which of the 4 Archetypes you want to be. That is when you select.

So you can create a toon, login him/her in and then log back out without ever having selected an archetype. Your archetype will be Commoner.
