Okay, so in the next few weeks I'm going to be looking at a new hard drive to replace my (bootable) primary drive.

I've been reading over some stuff about programs that will make a complete or partial copy of the drive, settings, etc. Norton Ghost (version 9) seems to get adequate ratings, Acronis True Image was mentioned, too, and sounds to be a bit better overall.

Any recommendations on this type of software? I'm aware that I can do a complete re-install of the o/s on a new drive, and I'm confident I can get it right given time, but that sounds like a complete pita to do.

I've done more wipes & rebuilds than I care to count. You're right, it is a PITA.

I've been using Ghost in all its various incarnations for years. It was, for me, easy to use. I've never even heard of True Image, so I can't say anything about that.

Personally, I'd recommend Ghost, but mostly because I know it and I've been using it for a long time.

I love Symantec Ghost. I just did a rollout of a new OS here at work and I used Ghost to transfer the basic OS and software image to over 60 machines. Quick, easy and flawless. It's proved itself to me over the years, so I highly recommend it.

I've used Ghost and Partition Magic at home as well. Both are great pieces of software for managing drives on a home system. I'd say you're fine picking up Ghost and using that to transfer the contents of one drive to another.

I use Ghost to keep the QA machines in order (we load images on machine 4-5 times a day per machine). 7 Years... no issues.
