Cable guy came out yesterday, wouldn't do what I asked, didn't come when we suggested, fixed the problem.. for 3 hours.. and POOF.. cable gone again

Except this time it took the modem all the way out (no more blinky lights) and the TV signal is shot too.

So I called DSL today. In 5 days I can have the package for self installation and the line will be set up and ready to go. And they have a promotion where the modem and activation are free :D

We are "prequalified".. now to see if it actually works. Lord knows dial-up never did.

Sorry to hear it. :(

This is the exact reason why I haven't gone to cable. My DSL works well 99% of the time, so I'm reluctant to screw around with it.

My DSL works like a charm, has been for three years now. My cable consists of a co-axial wire that comes stright off my street lines, through my wall, and into the back of the VCR, no set-top box, no remote, no nothing. I just got a letter from Adelphia the other day saying they finally managed to get digital service in my area, would I be interested?

You can see why I still have DSL?

While I understand your experiences, I basically had the opposite: my 2 cable modem experiences (one in Manhattan and my current one in suburbia - 2 differenet providers, Time Warner and Cablevision) have been excellent. My NYC DSL experience was hell on earth, otoh, and I would have Verizon again in my new digs so I did not even call them.

Up until recently, my Roadrunner experience has been great. I started in Beta... great service (We can be there tomorrow between 3 and 5), and, aside from some disconnect issues, reliable service.

Lately, though, I've spent more time down than up. And now they schedule 3-4 days out.. in half day increments instead of 2 hour increments. And the repair guys are less prompt, less knowledgable, and a bit surly.

Bell South just started DSL in our area.. and they don't rate that well as a provider. But we shall see.

I love my DSL. Downtime is nonexistant. Speed never really changes, only to websites that get busy.

Well, I don't see as I really need to say anything about our DSL service and whether we like it ...

Or whether you all think it's doing OK :)

You might also check http://www.speakeasy.net/ as a DSL provider (they've been doing ours for like 3 years and we got them again when we moved 8) ). The only issue there might be that most of the plans I looked at were for static IP and I wanted to run a server (or 5) ...

That's if BS craps out on you. Might also check http://www.dslreports.com/ for information and when you install they have a speedtest (which the only free ones are west coast sites, but hey, it's a test :) ) so you can see how your performance is (and if you have any speed garauntee, whether it's time to actually read that paragraph)
