Sunday: Was feeling kinda cruddy, so took the day off. Stomach virus or something. Watched tooo much TV.

I did a 10-mile run Sunday morning. I was hoping to get it done before it started to heat up, but I didn't get started until after 8:30am. It was already in the upper 70s when I finished a little before 10:00am. Bleh.

I did some work in the yard and around the outside of the house after that. (I had to rehang a gutter, clean the rest of the gutters, and powerwash the siding - all great fun.) I was planning on doing some light weight work later in the eveing after we got the young'uns off to bed, but the first big thunderstorm of the season rolled through and knocked our power out around 4pm. We're one of about 20,000 customers still without power this morning.

With limited hot water, I opted for hygiene over fitness for the night.

Also... have taken to sometimes putting a raw egg in my protein shake. Makes it more fluffy and adds more protein too!

Any idea if those might be related? Save for the occasional glass of eggnog (fully pasteurized, thankyouverymuch), I try to avoid raw eggs.

[/font]I don't think so... stomach started acting up Saturday morning, the egg was only Saturday night. And I've never had a problem with them before...

Monday: Started the day with just over 2 miles on the Gazelle (some calories burned over 30 minutes better than none, I think). After dinner did 30 mins on the treadmill at 6mph. (ish)

Had my weigh in with my trainer this monday. Down to 194 with the same fat/muscle ratio. That's a total of 15 pounds in just under 2 months. Did my weight training tonight with my trainer.

Finally got back to the club this week (haven't made it in two or three weeks now, with being out of town for 4 day weekends and stuff; and the hotels weren't well stocked on equipment)

Managed to do my full weight routine where I had left it last time, so that was good. Ellipticals were full so I hit the rowing machine. Decided that when I'm doing weight training, elliptical better b/c rowing uses my arms :o

Tuesday: 30 mins on the "silly machine" in the morning before breakfast. Had some time with the treadmill in the evening, so here's what I did...

Usually, I warm up with 2 minutes @ 4mph, then go at 6mph for as long as I can... my goal is 30 minutes. So far, I've been unsuccessful, something gives at about the 17 minute mark. Walk for 2 more minutes @ 4mph, and I'm good to go until the 30 minute mark @ 6mph again.

Tonight, I warmed up with 1 minute @ 4mph then, just to experiment, put the treadmill @ 5mph and found I could run for 30 minutes straight at that speed (and probably could have gone farther). That felt good, knowing I could hold a pace for 30 minutes, even if it was a bit lower than I wanted. I THINK I'll approach this, from now on, by simply upping the pace by .1 every so often; maybe once a week or something, or maybe .2mph. We'll see. Distance covered was only slightly less tonight, and heart rate was only a tiny bit lower... probably because the 2 minute "rests" let it drop too much, dunno. Maybe "Crazylegs" Erudite can comment?

(2min @ 4mph (2min@4mph) + 13min @ 6mph (13min@6mph)) x 2
vs
(1min @ 4mph) + (30min @ 5mph)?

"Crazylegs". Heh.

You're heart rate will drop some in the 2-minute walking period. How much depends on how fit your cardiovascular system is - some people recover very quickly with very little rest.

When you say, "something gives at about the 17 minute mark", what do you mean? Can you pinpoint what makes you want to slow down? Is it a cardio issue (wheezing, struggling to breath) or a strength issue (tired/heavy legs), or just a general feeling of "Man, this sucks!"?

...

I tend focus on distance rather than time. That is, I get on a treadmill knowing I'm going to go 5 miles. If I go slower, that just means I'm going to be on the treadmill longer. My dislike for being there keeps my pace honest. :lowrazz:

FWIW, during the two months or so that I do use a treadmill, I do a step-up workout. I start at 6.5mph, and increase the speed by 0.5mph for every half-mile that I run up to 5 miles, then slide back to 6.0mph for a half-mile cool-down period.

How much depends on how fit your cardiovascular system is - some people recover very quickly with very little rest.I wouldn't call me "fit" yet, but mine seems to drop fairly quickly (handlebar pulse-meter's probably not super accurate though... rate goes from 160-165 down to 120 in a fairly short time.

Mostly a leg thing, so I'm guessing strength... lungs/heart don't burn or feel bad, but it may be a muscle oxygenation thing... Just an overall... "URGGGGGGG..." feeling. :lowlol:

My dislike for being there keeps my pace honest. :lowrazz: I'm pretty much just keeping my cardio to 30-35 mins right now, but the distance is growing as my pace gets reliably higher. I say "reliably" because I want to be at the point where I can go "fast" all the way (except warm-up) instead of having to slow down to recharge.
FWIW, during the two months or so that I do use a treadmill, I do a step-up workout. I start at 6.5mph, and increase the speed by 0.5mph for every half-mile that I run up to 5 miles, then slide back to 6.0mph for a half-mile cool-down period.I might be able to do 6.5mph for about 10-15 minutes at this point, tops. Which is wierd, I think because that's beyond the time you'd think for your body to decide whether or it's in aerobic mode or not, but I can't seem to break about 15-17 minutes @ 6mph (mentioned above). Last night, at 5mph, I feel I could have gone a LOT longer than the 30 minutes, even though my pulse was maybe only 5bpm lower than at 6mph, so I THINK I was in the aerobic zone. 6mph might just be the edge of that for me; maybe my cardio system can't quite "keep up" to my muscles at that pace. Dunno.

It's hot outside. Really hot. Africa hot. Running is unpleasant. Still, 5 miles every day except Tuesday. I didn't have time on Tuesday. Hopefully I'll get a longer run in tomorrow morning before it gets too hot to make up for it.

Friday: 30 mins on the Gazelle before breakfast; I'm picking the pace up a bit: 5mph+ but still way easier than a treadmill.
Saturday: See Friday, and finished the day with 2nd part of upper body workout.
