I got to see this a couple of days ago.

Can't say enough good things about it. As much as I (irrationally) want to dislike Tom Hanks, the guy is just ****ing great in everything he does. The supporting cast is wonderful as well, especially 1) whoever plays the kid and 2) Jude Law.

I admire Law, because he is a talent, great looking actor, who isn't afraid to allow himself to look really ugly/creepy for a role.

The real star is the director of photography (conrad Hall I think). The movie is simply beautiful. Every scene is framed exactly right, and if he doesn't win an Oscar for it there is no justice. Camera movement is wonderful and the light...well, don't get me started on the light. let's just say the common sense and skillful use of the lighting in this thing gets me aroused.

My only complaint....

OKay, Road to perdition is based on a comic book of the same name. Directly based, I mean, the plot changes precious little. You won't see that in any of the promotions. No one is mentioning it.

For those of us who see comics as a medium which desperately needs to move away from the pervert suit (superhero) hole it has dug itself, and which desperately needs to attract a new brand of reader, the fact no one is mentioning this damned thing was a graphic novel is painful.

Perdition is exactly what adult comics needs to be, and the industry needs people pushing it to the forefront and screaming "LOOK AT HOW FRICKING GREAT THIS IS! AND THERE ARE NO DAMNED WEIRDOS IN CAPES!"

Still, don't miss this one.

I'm looking forward to this one. It looks gritty and real. I agree with you on Tom Hanks too. He doesn't appeal to me as a person (IE: He's not "cool") but he nails EVERY character he plays, and he plays a WIDE variety, you gotta admit.

I didn't know it was a "comic" book... Interesting.

Aiiigggghhhhhhhhhh.

Okay, not surprised really, just proves my point. It is a graphic novel actually (which means it was published as a seingle work as opposed to serially). Its now available at your local Barnes and Noble and its a good example of what good, non-superhero comics can be.

I did that on purpose. I didn't mean to slight your pretty little kiddie magazines.

Do you hide your stack of em under the bed when the underwear models come over?

On second thought, maybe that's what interests em. A guy who's confident enough in his manliness that he reads comic books.

Again, I'm joking, Ash. I'd never seriously cast even a shred of doubt on your renowned studliness. :)

Hey,

I've heard good things about this one. That Hanks' performance takes him away from the solid gold good guy he usually plays. That Jude Law, as referred to by Ash and as stated in a review I read, seems to be bent on being an expert character actor, despite the fact that he has star written all over him. That Paul Newman's performance anchors the whole thing.

Looking forward to this coming out on DVD (I don't go to theaters, as a further aspect of my getting old and cranky).

hehe.

No, I keep whatever trades I am reading on my coffee table. Comics and comics readers have been embarrassed of themselves for too long.

I mean novelists aren't embarassed to be novelists, and nobody is embarassed to be reading the newest John Grisham (even though they probably should be). The writing in (good) comics is better than just about anything out there, but until we stop marginalizing ourselves as readers things aren't going to get better.

Yes, I am a tad bit of a crusader on this topic.

And I think Biaxin is more curmudgeonly than stinky.

Glad to see you don't keep your comic books in the closet. :D

"Rotund Curmudgeon" sounds like a good title for him, no?
