View Full Version : Anybody still playing this?

Santy Claus left Guild Wars under the Christmas tree for me this year. After the obligatory trip down to Satan's doorstep (a.k.a. the mother-in-law's home in Winston-Salem, NC), I'm back home. I loaded the game this morning and played around for a bit. Seems fun, but still feeling things out.

We have a copy. I think I have a level 6ish toon, I know Jabby and Rubi have decent level toons and I also know there's a LoW there, though I'm not sure if Tabrizia is still playing enough to guild.
It's cool and if there's a renewal, we might just find ourselves back into it.

I play on and off, though the likelyhood of finding me online is fairly low. If you want guilding in LoW (which consists of me and atty right now) pm me and I will get on to guild.
I'm normally on once or twice every week or so, but it may be for as short as 15 minutes and it really depends on my school schedule.

I made level 6 last night while finishing up the newbie armor upgrade for elementalists. Took me a while to find the collector for the shoes, hiding way back behind the gargoyles in the catacombs.
I have five or six quests I want to run / finish, then I'll trigger the searing and move into the meat of the PvE game. Having fun so far, but it still feels like there's lots to learn. I can see the PvE game capping out pretty quickly though. I hope the arena / PvP aspects is entertaining.

Oh oh! I was going to post this same thread today, as I just picked up a copy of Guild Wars on the cheap over the weekend.
I have yet to even crack open the box though, as I haven't had the energy the past couple of nights for a new game learning curve. Is there a "server" or "shard" I need to be on to find LoW people?

I play off and on, atm it's the only online game I can play due to it's no fee and no extensive time commitment (once things settle down I get to think about what I want to play regularlyish).
My play times are odd at the moment (heck their completely random!) and very short (10-20 minutes usually).

There aren't really shards or servers. Cities and outposts are common to everybody. There are different "districts" that you can move between, although I have yet to do so.
For example, when I first logged in to Ascalon City, I was in American District 4. By accessing a drop-down menu, I could move to American District 1 through 8, I think, or to an international district. Same NPCs and whatnot, but different players. At least that's my understanding.
Most areas outside of the cities and outposts are pockets - they exist only for you (and your groupmates).

OK, that sounds like it makes finding friends easy enough. I will try to install tonight and maybe play for an hour or so. It'll be after 10:00pm EST though when I can log in.
Guess I can spend my lunchtime today surfing Guild Wars sites to get a feel for what class(es) I want to try out.

I have it too. Was thinking of getting the kid's computer upgraded so that they could play.

Up to level 7 last night. Except for going through the gate into Northlands, I think I've pretty much exhausted pre-searing now, at least for my two professions. Level 8 looks to be about as far as I'll go before doing the trigger quest.
As much as I'm enjoying the game - and I am - I did find myself getting frustrated with the "skating" feel to movement last night. That bugged me when I played SW:G, too.

skating feel? you mean the lack of jumping?

Partially lack of jumping, yes. Mostly I meant that even small obstacles require you to move around them, rather than over them. You can't walk up (or down) the steep side of a small hill - to get to the top or bottom, you have to walk around to a more gradual slope. You can get hung up in a patch of rocks that are shin-high. In SW:G, where I first encountered the "feel" as it were, there were places where you couldn't step over a curb from the street to the sidewalk. Very similar feel in GW, in spots.

Level 8 last night, finishing up the last two quests I could find pre-searing. I didn't see much need to hang out and try to level up hunting Charr in the Northlands, so I triggered the searing...and promptly got thumped in my first taste of Guild Wars PvP. (Not helped, I think, by poor random group distribution. Three casters and a warrior, with my monk secondary profession being the only healer on our team. Nevertheless, it wasn't even close.)
I poked around the ruins of Ascalon City for a bit. Just long enough to locate the banker. Then I created a necromancer and ran the first few pre-searing quests with him. I'll add him to the roster page, so if anybody gets back into playing this they can look me up.

I'm going to install this tonight while watching Geek Night on Sci-Fi. Then I should have tiome to play over the weekend.

Played a few hours between Saturday night and Sunday afternoon/evening. Started Raveneye Darkstar, a shadowknight (Warrior/Necro). Got a ton of quests knocked out and skills learned.
Currently level 7 and hanging out at Fort Whatsitsname wrapping up the last of my pre-searing quests.

Welcome to GW, Raveneye. :lowrazz:
I didn't play much this weekend. The first free weekend since Christmas saw us taking down holiday decor. I goofed around a bit with Destrid in the Ascalon Arena yesterday. Fun, but I don't think I've got a very potent PvP skillset at the moment. I definitely need more offense. At one point, my team won three in a row, but I've lost more than I've one. Still haven't done anything productive post-searing.
Durloth locked in ranger as his secondary, and got a big cat for his pet. I'll need to change that, as I don't think it's a very necromancerish pet. I tried to find one of the moss spiders, as that seems more fitting, but no luck. I though about a wolf, but really have my heart set on the silly spider. I did have fun animating some bone horrors.

NarNar Doorsmasher (war/mo) and Tril Dinrin (Ele/Mes) kick around here and there.
One day I'll create NarNar Doorcloser (Mo/War) for Attriel and Kiir ;)

I liked playing with the bone horrors too, but I hate that they start losing health right away, it makes them too flimsy to be a reliable pet. I ended up pulling that skill off my hotbar in favor of Vampiric Touch.
With the combo of warrior (sword-oriented) and Necro skills I'm finding combats to be a cakewalk. Most things die very quickly, and I have just enough healing ability to take on groups of mobs and win. I have a 4/4 split on my hotbar currently, but that will likely change once I can get an interrupt skill based on sword.
Warrior: Frenzy, Healing Signet , Sever Artery (sword) and Gash (sword)
Necro : Vamp. Touch, Deathly Swarm, Life Siphon, Blood Renewal
Vamp Touch and Life Siphon give me health while taking it form the opponent, and Blood Renewal can be cast prior to taking on a group to give me a self-healing boost. Deathly swarm is basically an AoE DoT. All these combine with the damage output from the warrior skills to make me a damage dealing machine.
I assume this won't last, as post-searing I'll probably need to concentrate more on Warrior skills than Necro, but it's a nice combo for now.

Don't forget to get your resurrection signet, if you haven't already. Not very important now, but vital if you plan on messing around in any of the arena zones. (Not necessary at all, but a lot of fun.) It's really simple to get, too - no fighting or anything. You actually just have to group with somebody for 30 seconds or so.

Got it already, thanks! You can't miss it considering there is a "Need partner for rez quest" shout out about every 15 seconds.
I do still need a partner for the other team quest pre-searing, the one where you open the gate in the wall and go out looking for the lost Ranger guy...

I've thought of picking up GuildWars on and off... but... eee... it's still $49.99? I would have thought the price would have dropped by now. :P

It is 39.99 (okay not much better) on ebgames online website, but yeah I would have thought it had dropped to 29.99 by now.

If their only source of income is from sales of the game and related expansions, I'm frankly surprised they lowered the retail cost at all.

Picke dmine up at Media Play's going out of business sale for $29. It should be down to $25 by now if there are any Media Play locations near you. They've got 50% all software last time I was there (a week ago).

No. :( No Media Play locations near me. I got lazy and didn't go check Best Buy today. But then again... I'm thinking of wriggling it out of one of the sites I will be writing for.
