Anyone have a spare RJ45 Hub laying around (2 ports is all I need) that they don't need anymore? If not I can go buy one (my old hub died long ago and wasn't needed... until now ;P ).

I don't have a hub, but I have an old Linksys router I might be able to dig up. I'm not positive if I have the power cord, though, you might need to get a universal thingy for it.

It's got 4 ports, no wireless, though, straight hard-wire.

They's cheap these days, and so are switches. Switches are your better option, honestly...

Dont you have a router in the apt already for your system? Or are you direct plug into your broadband?

Just need a cheap way to split the wire from the DSL Router to 2 machines and have both connections work simultaneously.

Besides Free is cheaper then spending money ;P

If you have a DSL router going right to the PC, then it sounds to me like what you really have is a DSL modem, which means you are lacking a firewall.

Am I mistaken? Because if I'm not, then you're very vulnerable atm...

not necessarily. hardware firewalls aren't exactly a cureall, and software firewalls (and good practices) can do a lot for ya.

but no, i haven't found my spare. i have determined it to be one of hte really old ones, so i wouldn't garauntee it'd work if i did find it :/

you're on your own man!

Ok how about "your vulnerability level is increased".

I mean you're right, they're not a cureall, but just having your only exposed point of attack being a piece of hardware and having your computers inside the wall have unreachable IPs certainly doesn't HURT. :)

Let's see...

Rotating IP addresses, not using a major DSL network (Covad), 2 Software Firewalls set to stop all comunication (unless I specifically unblock it), no internal network of any kind, PC is only on when in use, all software components update themselves everyday, all accounts other then local admin are blocked and I don't use MS products other then Windows XP SP2.

Don't think I'm that vulnerable. I've also never had an issue in the past 9 years of having this setup <shrug>.

I'm known at the office for having the most locked down PC's... all done with software and OS changes. You learn pretty quick how to do things when you have no budget and your told to do so :lowrazz: .
