So, I break down and buy Guild Wars. I get the retail box since I wanted the manual and all that jazz. Get the game installed, try to create a user account - and get shafted by the key code.

To start, what ****ing genius decided that it would be a good idea to place the code behind a scratch off coating? I mean, did they not know that the chances of the code being damaged in the process of scratching off the cover were about 100%? (I asked the folks at support the same question, sans obscenity. I wonder how often they hear it?). I tried every substitution I can think of in terms of the questionable figures, still no soap.

Waiting to see whether I can get a reasonable response, or if they claim I will need to purchase a new key code. If it's the latter... :mad!:

I had the same issue, though eventually I was able to figure out the smeared and scratched differences between 8's, B's, 3's, I's, and 7's and actually hit on a code that worked. Who knows if it was the actual code on my card or if I ninja'd someone else's code that was similar to what was originally printed on my card. All in all it was a frustrating and needlessly lengthy experience.

I did see on the support forums that you are not alone in inadvertantly destroying your key. Apparently support is pretty good about issuing new ones, though I've no idea how quick they are to respond over a weekend.

Good luck. When (if) you do get in game look for Raveneye Darkstar and I'll run you to a few Ascalon locations. Unfortunately I just sold all my Ascalon section collectibles when I moved to Shiverpeaks, or I'd have passed them off to you to get you started.

I lucked onto the proper code and last night Elbereth Aertryn (ranger/mesmer) was created. Got her midway through 6th level and she and her petty kitty cat are the terror of the countryside (usually).
