View Full Version : Okay, I'll start (weight progress)

Ash suggested in the Weight Watchers thread that we post our progress to support everyone. As I can trust I won't hear any comments from the audience here, I'll start. Perhaps we can sticky this and update it as we go.

As of 1/2/06:
Starting weight: 189
Goal weight: 160

The screwey thing here, now, is that I have to start eating more. I've lost a LOT of weight already, but since I'm nursing, I risk messing that up if I keep it up at this rate. So I have to eat more. Go figure.

Actually, I have 2 goals. Immediately, I need to get to 195. Apparently the birth control patch (which I'm using) is less effective for every pound over 198 that you are. So the midwife suggested I be a solid 195 (or less) before I could depend completely on it. As I'm not overly happy with the other types of BC, I want to get there as soon as I can. The catch is that I'm not supposed to lose more than a pound a week when I'm nursing. That's okay, though, that's only 7 weeks away.

My second goal is where I'd like to end up, at this point. Really, the 'ideal weight' for my frame and height is 130 - 144. But when I was at 160, I was comfortable. I liked the clothes I fit. I could go dancing for an evening and not be dead by 10pm (when I started at 9 :P), I could do my grocery shopping and various activities and still had energy to make dinner or do something in the evening.

As such, that's my goal. If I make that and feel I could/should go further, then I'll look at it at that point. That is (at my current suggested rate of loss) 42 weeks away.

Edited to add: I've got to buy a new scale. It says I weigh the same as I did the day after I came home from the hospital which I *know* isn't true (I've lost my extra blood volume and my uterus is back to its original size). So, Rubi and I aren't going to be able to put up our weight for a while yet. *sigh*

Starting: Let's just say that our scale doesn't register. :( (As of 1/2/06)

Goal: Let's start with lighter. Possibly 220-230.

Current: Dunno, the scale doesn't register. (1/2/06)

I'll play too!

Starting : 215
Current : 215
Goal : 200

I think this could be more of a challenge for me than it looks on paper. I'm not an unhealthy person, and I don't look (or feel) overweight. Like I said in the WW thread, my weight gain came from inactivity during recovery from surgery, so basically I traded some muscle for fat and then tacked on a few extra pounds on top of that. The problem this presents is that exercising will drop the fat, but regain the muscle, thus making actual LOSS of pounds minimal until I'm back in my pre-surgery condition.

First order of business, get up off my ass and start exercising and walking alot again.

Maybe we should take a page from the Sparkpeople http://www.sparkpeople.com guidelines and start a daily thread saying what we did to improve our diet/exercise. Entries could be as simple as "I walked the dog for 20 minutes last night" or "I ordered the new salad at Wendy's for lunch and it's really tasty, you should try it!".

I just want to suggest something real quick before too many people get in this thread....

Try not to set a huge goal for yourself right at the start. Losing 50 pounds may be your eventual goal, but when you've lost 10 and you've got 40 more to go, you're going to get discouraged, even though losing 10 pounds is significant and a real improvement.

Instead set your starting goal at a median range. If you weigh 250 and want to weigh 200 then set your goal at 230. 20 pounds is very attainable, and at 10 pounds you're halfway there! Then, if you can get down to 230, see if you can maintain that for a solid month (4 weeks). Maintaining a goal weight is a HUGE thrill, and gives you the confidence you need to set a new lower goal weight and eventually achieve and maintain that one.

I know it seems silly, but sometimes "tricking yourself" like this is the best way to keep yourself feeling motivated. Success is the biggest motivator, and when your goals are set in small stages, success is easier to achieve.

I'm in too!

Start Weight: 219 lb
Height: 5 ft 9 in
Current Weight: 214 lb
Loss of: 5 lb
Short Term Goal: 15 lbs by end of April (about 2 pounds/week)
Eventual Goal 170 - 175lb.

Been lower than 165 lb before and was not able to concentrate or have any energy to do the things I like.

Currently using an eliptical machine 4-6 times a week for 20 minutes to get my heart rate up to a target of 65 - 75 % of maximum. (Max heart rate is 220 - age = maximum.) During Babylon 5 of course!

What the heck:

Starting weight (as of 2/20/04): 221
Target weight: 205
Height: 6 ft 2.5 in

Lifting weights three times a week. Also cut back on the amount of stuff I eat (though not necessarily the types of stuff).

Me too!

Starting Weight: 157 (01/01/04)
Current Weight: 148
Goal: 135

I'm trying to exercise - riding the exercise bike and doing some Pilates and light free weights for toning. The challenge is sticking with it. I'll say "I'm going to exercise x number of evenings this week" and I'm lucky if I get half that *sigh*. Definitely something I need to do though - I get winded way too easily.

The other issue I have is finding exercises I can do. I had one of my ankles reconstructed after an accident. That joint has limited motion now and, from compensation for that, my knees have become arthritic, so running, squats (high impact or deep bending) etc. are out for me. I can walk for exercise but limited distances and not every day. Challenges, challenges :? !

Thanks for the support network :D!! This is a great idea!!

Hmmm...

Starting: a bit over what I'd like
Current: developing a case of Dunlops Disease (the belly Dun Lop over the belt)
Goal: noticeably less than now

Why the lack of numbers? They are nothing out of control, just that I honestly can't remember the last time I was on a scale. Do seem to remember a weight of 160. Probably ~170 now, would like to get back to ~155.

Can probably accomplish this if I'd just start eating at 'normal' times (including actually having breakfast, I hardly ever do) and getting back on the road bike 3 mornings/week.

Okay, after getting all sorts of hungry from the indulgence/weakness thread, I'll post my bit here. Have a wedding coming up in June (June 19, so less than 4 months to go. :D), so want to shed a few before that time comes. Want to feel comfy on the beach. :)

Present wt: 205ish lb
Goal wt by wedding 185-190.

With my breadth (ie, shoulder width), I'd look too much like a walking T-bone steak if I dropped much below that. Haha, medium rare at that. ;)

Sigh...they say that nothing motivates like peer pressure...

Fine:

On May 22, 2002 I was over 300.
On Aug 2, 2002 I was at 280
By Oct 30, 2002 I was down to 245

On Mon, Feb 23, 2004 I was back up to 270
Goal: 225 by end of year
Plan: Moderation and more exercise. I don't need to diet severly, I just need to stop sitting in a damn chair all day long and eat LESS at every meal. ;)

I wonder if a fast over a day or 3 would help the stomach shrink? :-)

I'm in too!

Starting off March 15th at current weight of 205, my goal is 180 by June 15th. Sounds ambitious? Maybe, but I was able to go from 216 to 185 in less than three months' time last Spring/Summer, so I'm confident. The holiday season along with some depression along with some major major workload really had made food attractive for a while, but I'm ready to get back into my good habits.

Eventual goal is to have the 6-pack abs and I'm going to have to learn some things in order to get there I think. I'm pretty well able to starve myself or to control my diet very strictly if I want, but excersise...FEH! So can a person starve himself to 6-packdom or what?

Cacstus
8th April 2004, 07:51 PM
Where'd everyone go?

Is it time to weigh in yet? How is everyone doing on their goals?

After to weeks of "being good" and not eating any pizza, burgers, soda pop or fast food of any kind I got fed up with lack of results. So I cut back on everything. A lot. THAT has produced some results!

April 8th @ 188!

I'll join in too, if ya'll don't mind.

Current: soft in the middle (I don't use scales)

Goal: less soft in the middle

Ways to achieve goal: Exercise 6 days/week. Keep variety high, change distances/durations. Ideally, keep swimming Tues/Thurs, running Wed/Fri and add in biking. Possibly bike on weekends. Return to weight program on short cardio days, like Mon, Fri. Increase ab and lower back strength for health reasons. Keep kitchen stocked with store bought foods and quick snacks to keep the McD's munchies to a minimum.

And Cacstus, you can't really starve your way to a 6pack. You would be thin, with no definition. Starvation diets have a way of coming back to haunt you too, not to mention other health problems that arise from the lack of vitamins, minerals, proteins, and calories your body is facing. :(

OK I'll play too...and try to remember to update here.

I've done the Weight Watchers program and it was the only successful program I've been on.

After the Disney trip last week I'm gonna get back on program!

11/19/04 Current 160
Goal wieght 150

(When I did WW I went from over 200 to 150. I'm not sure how much over 200 as when I saw the first number was a 2 I stopped looking. For my hieght - 5' 5" - that was too much).

Lorothan

I'll join in as well.

Height: 6'1"
Current weight: 184 lbs.
Target weight: 170 lbs.

I'm in very good shape by most standards - I lift weights twice/week in the winter, and am riding my bike (indoors on a trainer) roughly 7 hours per week. The problem is that I'm competively racing road bike from March thru September each year (this is my 3rd season) and compared to most racers, I'm absolutely huge. Ever see Lance Armstrong up close? 5'10" and 158lbs. Tom Danielson is a new member of Lance's racing team, and he's 6' tall and 135lbs!!! On sustained hill climbs, I get crushed by the lightweight racers.

Anyway, I definitely have room to get lighter, and it's really hard to lose those last few pounds and keep them off. When I'm exercising so much, I get REALLY hungry! So hats off to all in the guild that have shown good discipline in weight reduction, and I'm throwing my hat in the ring too.

Well, I'm starting again. It's been almost a year and, luckily for me, I'm only up 6 pounds. However, I'm still nowhere near my goal and Rubi and I both have some serious work to do. We also want to simply get healthier with our physical being. I mean, we're both TIRED after just going to the grocery store. His back hurts, my joints are in seriously sad shape and I think we can fix that.

We're starting back tracking points again and we're both dedicated to working out. We can't afford weights or a machine of any sort (yet) or a gym membership, so we're doing it at home (or walking). Gonna start slow and work our way up with a combination of toning and cardio type exercises.

We will be doing some research on machines. I'd like a bike or elliptical or glider-type thing. With the weight we have, we're going to need to take some off before we can do anything with any kind of impact. My joints just won't take it without seriously hurting. I understand the "no pain no gain" thing, but there's already going to be plenty of pain without making it worse. Not sure what's going to be best (and, again, this is just for the cardio thing), but so far the elliptical or bike is looking best, to me. Something adjustable so we can change tension and whatnot. Guess we'll see.

So, I'll be updating my post above weekly, on Fridays, I think, starting today (and this Friday) to keep it up. If anyone wants to start again and join me, I'd love it!

I started using 16 once cans for resistance exercises years ago. I had to increase the reps at the time, but it helped. You can also load up 2 cans into very long socks to use like a "saddlebag" over your ankle when doing leg exercises. Rolled coin also works in socks...as well as boxes of ammo.

We also post a weekly thread if you would like to join us there for our updates and grunts.

I've done more with 12 oz cans myself. Never really moved all the way up to handling two at a time though. That, and I'd usually forget to alternate arms, especially after the first couple were emptied.. er.. got too light.

The most important thing really is to just do something, to get into the habit of doing it.

Also, and this seems completely counter-intuitive, you may need to eat more.

As long as you eat healthy, eating more often speeds your metabolism. If I were trying to lose weight I would insure that I ate breakfast (a bannana or something, minimally) every day. You've simply GOT to kick start your system.

I'll second that. Except that my viewpoint is from NOT eating, especially in the morning. Far, far too often I'll just have a late lunch. And that's it. A great way for the body to think "Omigod, I dunno when I'll get food again, better hold onto this as fat." Bleah.

Serani
3rd January 2006, 09:19 PM
I can't tell you how many times I've done that. Or not eaten until early evening except for a snack or two. Bad bad BAD person.

I've felt less hungry this time and I think I'm eating better/more often than I was before I dieted. :evileye: Seriously, I'm realizing that, at the end of the day, I still have plenty of points left. I do, however, need to find more protein, don't think I'm getting enough of that. Just for illustration: I get 22-29 points a day for food and last night, by 8p, I'd only eaten 19. Um, oops! Got my 3 points in. Tried again today...as of now, um, 15 points.

Hmm. Ash is right, I have to eat more!! :eek!:

Weight watchers points, silly. There's a formula that you use to figure the point value for food - any food (generally related to the number of caloris, fat grams and fiber grams in food). You can have so many of those points per day.

Hmm, I was thinking of coming in here for an update as well.

Been slowly losing weight since I moved this summer. Partly from eating better, partly from getting out on the bike much more. Was ~165 early summer, this last week I 've been at 149 a few mornings. First time under 150. Don't really feel like I've gotten smaller, but must've somewhere. Still got a bit of a belly that needs to go away, but need to get back on the situps for that.

I don't think I ever mentioned this but at my last physical in the spring, my doctor re-iterated his desire for me to reduce my belly a bit. I didn't consider myself overweight at 212 (6'3") but he said abdominal obesity alone increases my risk of diabetes.

Anyway, I have cut out all food/drinks with high fructose corn syrup in the last 4 months and am down to 204. I changed nothing else.

Odd. I'm probably a half-inch shorter than you are, and I've been told my optimum is at about 215. Of course, I'm also really broad-shouldered.
