Intel seem to have gone bersek to prove they are ahead of AMD again:

Quad core roadmap (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/09/26/intel_quad-core_roadmap/) (or twin dual-core to be more accurate)
Lower power consumption chips (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/09/26/idf_otellini_keynote_process_tech/) aiming to reduce power requirements by 90%
80 core teraflop desktop processor (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/09/26/intel_teraflop_processor/) commercially available in 5 years?

So, do I hang on 'till next year for the quaddies, wait until '08 for the low power 45nm quaddies or hang on into the next decade for my own desktop supercomputer?

Or do I buy one of each as and when they become available ....

And in the meantime, what is AMD up to ??

Isn't it a given that as soon as you buy a new computer, something better will come along (and be on sale for less than you paid) the next week?

I generally assume it will be obsolete by the time it is delivered.

Aye, generally 18 months or so after each release of the processor... More or less right?

Of course, Graphics card don't follow that do they, or audio...

I plan to build a new system later this year, or wait until Tax Refund time... Thus debating between Intel or AMD... Would be a first time for me to go Intel after all these years of AMD...

Maybe I would be better off sticking with the Mac... But most of my software are PC only... /ponders the new Intel chipped Macs.

Well, you could dual boot windoze on an intel based mac and then you would have ...
a grossly overpriced windoze system.

Just adopt my firm policy of only upgrading when a new version of an Elder Scrolls game is released.:smile:

Or if you're truly stingy, don't upgrade until the next version of Duke Nukem gets released.

Hehe! Didn't someone... (Leng!) tell me that you could be waiting forever if you're waiting for the "next best" thing in computer components?

I think I preordered that one while I was still in the womb.
