What's the best way overall?

I have like 5 or so boxes (full) of blank cheques... And the accounts are still valid at present...

And how long should I keep bank statement records? (1994!?)

Shred and recycle.

Or burn 'em.

We just ran into this when we started cleaning out the RoG.

Blank checks must be destroyed. Burning or a cross-cut shredder are good options.

Bank statement records should be kept for 7 years, iirc.

1. Shred.

2. 10 years theoretically if the IRS ever decides to Audit you. That being said, if the investigation is serious, they won't accept the bank statement records from you, but will obtain certified copies from the bank.

It all depends on how paranoid you are. I dispose of mine in the Halloween bonfire (well haven't had one since I moved here.) and I don't keep but 1 from every account I've had in a bank & dispose of the rest.

I don't keep credit card statements either, and haven't received a paper statement in years.

I hand them out to the homeless.

You could always take them back to the banque for disposal. :lowrazz:

Sign them, then send them to me. I'll take care of em.

No no no.

You need to diversify their disposal, obviously.

Send half to ES and half to me. That should take care of the problem.

RoG...?

Room over Garage.

They also call it a FROG - Finished Room Over Garage.

I guess its a local term.

You can diversify further and send some to me.

Actually, I just need one. Just send it a week before you send any to ES and Drom.

Oh.. and if you include your current balance, it will save us both charges for "insufficient funds".

I thought the IRS requirements were 7 years?

For tax records. As was said, they will go right to the bank for statements.

If that happens, do I get stuck with the past statement printing bills? That bites... Ya mean, if I have the statements that were mailed from the bank, they won't take it? Even if it is in the original envelopes? Postmarked even?

That makes no sense...

if it's unopened, it's an unlikely maybe. if you had the ill sense to open your bank statements, then no. once it's open, it's a complete fiction

and no, you probably wouldn't get punched for the fees.
