Ladies and gentlemen (and drax), I want to announce that Carol has officially advanced from Newbie Geek status to Acolyte Geek.

As you know, since meeting me she has begun playing computer games online, started reading some sci-fi/fantasy and watching it on TV, and playing tabletop strategy games.

For her birthday this year, Carol requested a new CD ROM burner (because hers wasn't working) and received a LightScribe DVD/CD burner, which we tested yesterday by making her first new CD and burning the label with the new drive.

This is the result

Wow, that's an impressive label. I didn't realize lightscribe could do that.

moved this into its own thread - in the bday thread it would likely get missed.

Woohoo! I'm special!! :pantless:

Er, I mean, very cool. I've had my eye on that for quite some time. Don't have the excess money to, ahem, burn on that, but maybe Christmas will be a decent time for it... *crosses fingers*

And a couple Hawaiian tunes. Joy will be so impressed.

We got an off name brand - Mag something or max something... $70 for the drive.

Does it require any sort of special covering for the cd, or does it create the cover on its own, without a special media? (Hope I transcribed my question correctly...)

Yeah, I am curious (yellow) too.

If I get what you're asking, it requires special media (http://www.supermediastore.com/lightscribe-light-scribe-dvd-r-cd-r-media.html).

Greebo

Yes it requires LightScribe media to burn the label. They're a bit more expensive.

The markup for lightscribe enabled drives is not that significant (about 5pounds last time I looked) but the media is still significantly more expensive. DVD-R lightscribe blanks are about 2x the price of the normal blanks. DVD+R is slightly cheaper but is less useful on my equipment.

Cool, and congrats Caylor!

I have a Yamaha drive with Disk tatto (Disckt@2) that uses the unused part of the data side to do a similar thing (But it doesn't stand out as well as the lightscribe). They quit making them after lightscribe came out I think. It had the benefit of working with any standard media but the drawback of using empty space on the data side (so if you fill the disk with data it won't have room for a tattoo). I'm glad to see the lightscribe does such a good job!

Yamaha have moved onto a new technology called LabelFlash. It looks quite nice but the media are hard to find and AFAIK NEC is the only other manufacturer to pick up on it.

That would make sense. I think NEC came up with Disct@2 and Yamaha was the only other to use it. If memory serves they often go with each others technologies.

That's a pretty good image! I didn't bother buying a lightscribe since I didn't know if they were what they touted themselves as.

I've seen and heard about them, but not known of anyone actually having one...

Nice Caylor!

Aye, the media for the lightscribe isn't cheap... BUT, if you plan to make copies of certain compliations (like, wedding pictures, home movies) and want to send them as gifts, it (lightscribe) is very cool.

More lasting than the paper cover jackets. :)

I got the drive because it was actually one of the cheaper ones there - the lightscribe function was a bonus - but as you can see, it works very nicely. :)

Of course even though my status as Geek has been elevated to Alcolyte - do you really think I know how to use it?

:rotflmao: :rotflmao:

I think it will be something that will take a while. ;)

How much, if I may inquire? Great, now I'm thinking of a few things... :lowlol:

I'm not sure I'd want it if its been stored there, but I also wonder who left it behind when they jumped up there...
