Fiiine, you can hide your socks behind the sneakers/boots/shoes... ;)

Many years ago I purchased a large number of pairs of identical socks. The idea was that you just grabbed a couple out of the pile and when they were all dirty you washed the lot, and you never had to worry about sorting out pairs.
Over the years each sock has faded and stretched and/or shrunk to a different extent. Now, instead of having 20 identical pairs I have 37 individual socks. They can be arranged in pairs by size, or by colour, or by shape. Each arrangement leads to a different pairing and there are always a few left over which cannot be paired. More importantly, if you pair by colour you end up with pairs of violently different sized and/or shapes.
And why 37, you may ask? Well, I read a story once which proposed that socks in the back of sock draws have a finite probabiility of mutating into wire coathangers. Which is why you always have too many hangars and at least one odd sock.

I usually do the same thing as Leng describes, but every year or two I just throw the lot out and buy a new bunch. That way I don't have to contemplate sock dissapearance theory too much.:D
Edit: As there seems to be some question as to the cleanliness of my foot attire, I wash em after one use and I actually do fold them up and put em away.

I change my socks every day and they get washed after one use.

Luckily, I can afford new socks when they get holes in them, and they always are worn only one day and washed again. More than one day is like using the same square of toilet paper over and over again! EEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWW! :eek!:

Socks are the one thing in my wardrobe I'm anal about. I buy a new package about every two months. They have to be hole free, unstretched and preferably thick. My feet have ALWAYS been cold so it's always been important to me to have good, clean, thick socks.
Thankfully, Jabby's happy with my hand-me-downs. She doesn't seem to care.
Oh, and yes, they're worn ONCE. Goes along with the rest, really, as socks tend to lose their elasticity and thickness after they've been worn. :lowrazz:

Serani.. its ok to wash them and wear them a second time.. I promise! :lowrazz:
I refuse to participate in this poll as my socks are clean, comfy, and hole-free and that is not an option.
I also have tried the bunch-of-identical-socks-in-the-bin technique. As Leng says, it doesn't work like you might expect. Expecially when Tucker the dog helps you do laundry by picking up the socks you drop.

Yeah! Where's the "My socks and clean, matched and holeless thank you very much!" option?

About five years ago I needed some new cycling socks, bought a few pair of black ones (after learning that riding with white socks in the dirt they don't stay white, no matter what chemicals they're cleaned with). Found myself wearing the new socks more off the bike than on. So I bought more. And then some more. So, my primary socks are Defeet AirEators (http://www.defeet.com/products/product.php?a=socks&b=8&c=46&PHPSESSID=92ec636eb532fc9209aa717c6f280f9e), got about 15 pair, all black. And unlike Leng's problem, mine have all stayed about the same. And over the years, I've only had to retire one pair due to holes. Heck, even when I was still wearing generic tube socks, I never understood how folks could get holes and wear their socks out so quick. I'd go years without having to buy more.
Other than that I've got about 10 different pairs of nice wool socks; some thick, some thin, some short, some mid-height, and some nearly to the knee. I wuv my wool socks. So cozy. Defeet makes some shorty socks, the WoolEator, will probably pick up some of those for winter riding.

I should buy some new dress socks, the ones I have are at least 10 years old, with no holes and very little elasticity lost in them. Either that or my legs get fatter to keep them up! :D

You could buy those little sock suspenders instead. That'll extend the life of them for another 5-10 years. ;)
